Age-associated cognitive decline.

INTRODUCTION: Age-associated cognitive decline-or normal (non-pathological, normative, usual) cognitive ageing-is an important human experience which differs in extent between individuals. The determinants of the differences in age-related cognitive decline are not fully understood. Progress in the field is taking place across many areas of biomedical and psychosocial sciences. AREAS OF AGREEMENT AND CONTROVERSY: The phenotype of normal cognitive ageing is well described. Some mental capabilities are well maintained into old age. From early adulthood, there are declines in mental domains such

Comparison of clinical findings and psychosocial factors in patients with atypical odontalgia and temporomandibular disorders.

AIMS: To systematically compare clinical findings and psychosocial factors between patients suffering from atypical odontalgia (AO) and an age- and gender-matched group of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: Forty-six AO patients (7 men and 39 women; mean age, 56 years) were compared with 41 TMD patients (8 men and 33 women; mean age, 58 years). RESULTS: Mean pain intensity at the time of inclusion in the study was similar between the groups (TMD: 5.3 +/- 0.4, AO: 5.0 +/- 0.3), but pain duration was longer in AO patients (AO: 7.7 +/- 1.1 years, TMD: 4.5 +/- 0.1 years).

Involvement of inferior parietal lobules in prospective memory impairment during acute MDMA (ecstasy) intoxication: an event-related fMRI study.

Prospective memory refers to the realization of delayed intentions. Several studies have shown that 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) users perform worse on measures of prospective memory as compared to nondrug users. Interpretation of these data may be limited because of polydrug use, psychosocial stressors, and increased psychopathology that have been reported in MDMA users. This study was designed to directly assess the pharmacological effect of MDMA on prospective memory and brain activity in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study. Twelve recreational MDMA users recei

[Epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica (Hallopeau-Siemens syndrome) of the hand -- surgical strategy and results].

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is an inherited, blister-forming skin disease. The Hallopeau-Siemens syndrome type is one of the most severe forms. Even minimal trauma to the skin leads to excessive blister formation that always heals with scars because the defect is located in the dermis at the dermoepidermal junction. A genetic defect of collagen VII leads to insufficient or missing anchoring fibrils. The patients suffer from protein loss, anaemia, secondary infections, oesophageal strictures, malignant transformation and hand deformities. These present as pseudosyndactyly, flexion contract

Nursing Facility and Home and Community Based Service Need Criteria in the United States.

Over the past two decades states have expanded the delivery of long term care from institutions to the home and community. Although state Medicaid need criteria for the home and community based services (HCBS) waiver program must be equivalent to those for nursing facility (NF) criteria, other screening procedures for these services are not specified. This study examined variations in need criteria, methods for determining need, and assessment forms for NF and HCBS across the states, and identified whether these procedures were more stringent for HCBS than for NFs. The NF minimum need criteria

[Viewpoint on the methodology of drug trials affecting cognition of elderly patients].

Clinical trials for cognitive disorders in the elderly require specific methodological guidelines. They must take into account the psychosocial dimension of the patient and his family and must be based on serious neurobiologic knowledge. In degenerative dementias the progress of research concern genetics, molecular intercellular recognition and astrocytic cells. Biology of cognition like hippocampal long term potentiation provides good pharmacologic basis for trials. In normal brain aging several ways must be developed: aminergic systems, free radicals, excitotoxic amino-acid, nerves growth fa

Spinal Cord Injury in a Nation at War: Functional Recovery Priorities of Ukrainian Veterans and Civilians Versus North Americans.

Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) represent a high-need, high-cost group facing unmet health care needs, particularly in war-affected settings. Veterans with combat-related SCI may experience distinct recovery priorities due to injury severity, psychological comorbidities, and limited access to rehabilitation. This study aimed to identify priorities for functional recovery among Ukrainian veterans with SCI and compare them with Ukrainian civilians and North American civilians. A survey-based study was developed using the Qualtrics XM platform and refined through expert review, SCI advo

Evaluating a Tailored Web-Based eHealth Intervention for Symptom Management in Couples Managing Prostate Cancer During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common nonskin cancer among men. Although treatments achieve excellent survival for localized PCa, long-lasting complications significantly diminish patients' quality of life (QOL) across physical, sexual, psychosocial, and general symptom domains. Because these effects also profoundly impact intimate partners, often reducing partners' QOL as much as or more than patients' QOL, supportive care must address the needs of both members of the couple. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of the Prostate Cancer Education and Resources for Couple

Two Decades Later: Long-Term Multisystem Sequelae and Subclinical Organ Dysfunction in Sudan Ebola Virus (SUDV) Survivors of the 2000 Outbreak.

Background: Despite repeated re-emergence of Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV), its long-term human toll remains under-characterised. We assessed multisystem clinical, biochemical, and psychosocial outcomes ~25 years after the 2000 Gulu outbreak. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional evaluation of 45 survivors of laboratory-confirmed SUDV and 30 age- and gender-matched community controls from the same region. Symptoms were assessed as current at the study visit using a structured checklist; for each symptom present, we recorded severity and duration from onset to the visit date. Standardised clinical

Psychosocial outcomes of children born via embryo donation.

STUDY QUESTION: What are parents' perceptions of their relationships with and the psychosocial adjustments of their children who are born via embryo donation? SUMMARY ANSWER: Families created through embryo donation have well-adjusted parent-child relationships and reassuring child psychosocial outcomes. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Embryo donation is an effective and growing form of third-party reproduction, but there is limited research in this field. Prior studies suggest that families created through gamete donation function well regarding parent-child relationship quality and child behavioral

Parenting interventions to support parent/child attachment and psychosocial adjustment in foster and adoptive parents and children: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adopted children and children placed in foster care are at increased risk of developing a range of mental health, behavioural, and psychosocial adjustment problems. Previous studies suggest that due to early experiences of separation and loss some children may have difficulties forming a secure attachment relationship with the adoptive/foster parents. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the present review were: (1) to assess the efficacy of attachment-based interventions on measures of favourable parent/child outcomes (attachment security, dyadic interaction, parent/child psychosocial a

Nursing Management of Epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation in a Patient With Chronic Paraplegia: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Epidural spinal cord stimulation (E-SCS) is a breakthrough intervention for functional restoration in chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). The nursing role in translating neuromodulation into daily living remains underexplored. METHODS: We recently managed the care of a 50-year-old man with American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale grade B paraplegia. Interventions ranged from preoperative psychosocial evaluation and education to postoperative outpatient follow-up. For E-SCS mapping, the team utilized a dual-verification approach (electromyography and muscle recruitment). W

Protecting Musculoskeletal Development and Physical Function in Adolescents on GLP-1 Therapy.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s), including semaglutide and liraglutide, are effective pharmacologic options for pediatric obesity, producing significant weight loss, cardiometabolic improvements, and reductions in barriers to physical activity. By alleviating pain, mechanical load, and psychosocial burden, these agents can also create a window to initiate sustainable health behaviors in adolescents. However, use during critical developmental periods raises concerns regarding long-term effects on musculoskeletal maturation. Adolescence is marked by rapid accrual of muscle and
