Age-related High-frequency Hearing Loss Is Not Associated With Horizontal Semicircular Canal Function.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the association between age-related hearing loss and reduced peripheral vestibular function using paired assessments … demic hospital to evaluate treatment options. Data collected included pure-tone audiometry, caloric reflex test, video head-impulse test (vHIT), and medical history. High-frequency hearing loss was quantified by the high Fletcher index (hFI), and horizontal semicircular canal (HSC) function were quantified by the caloric reflex test and vHIT. RESULTS: W …

Firing Rate Adaptation of the Human Auditory Nerve Optimizes Neural Signal-to-Noise Ratios.

Several physiological mechanisms act on the response of the auditory nerve (AN) during acoustic stimulation, resulting in an adjustment in auditory gain. These mechanisms include-but are not limited to-firing rate adaptation, dynamic range adaptation, the middle ear muscle reflex, and the medial olivocochlear reflex. A potential role of these mechanisms is to improve the neural signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the output of the AN in real time. This study tested the hypothesis that neural SNRs, inferred from non-invasive assessment of the human AN, improve over the duration of acoustic stimulati…

Involuntary Neuromuscular Coupling between the Thumb and Finger of Stroke Survivors during Dynamic Movement.

Finger-thumb coordination is crucial to manual dexterity but remains incompletely understood, particularly following neurological injury suc … y, and index finger joint angles were recorded during each trial. Joint angle perturbations invoked reflex responses in the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), first dorsal interossei (FDI), and extensor digitorum communis muscles of the index finger and heteronymous reflex responses in flexor pollicis brevis of the thumb (p < 0.017). Phase of movement …

A randomised controlled cross-over double-blind pilot study protocol on THC:CBD oromucosal spray efficacy as an add-on therapy for post-stroke spasticity.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is the most disabling neurological disorder and often causes spasticity. Transmucosal cannabinoids (tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol (THC:CBD), Sativex) is currently available to treat spasticity-associated symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis. Cannabinoids are being considered useful also in the treatment of pain, nausea and epilepsy, but may bear and increased risk for cardiovascular events. Spasticity is often assessed with subjective and clinical rating scales, which are unable to measure the increased excitability of the monosynaptic reflex, considered the…

Netupitant, a Potent and Highly Selective NK1 Receptor Antagonist, Alleviates Acetic Acid-Induced Bladder Overactivity in Anesthetized Guinea-Pigs.

Introduction. Tachykinins potently contract the isolated urinary bladder from a number of animal species and play an important role in the regulation of the micturition reflex. On the guinea-pig isolated urinary bladder we examined the effects of a new potent and selective NK1 receptor antagonist (netupitant) on the contractions induced by a selective NK1 receptor agonist, SP-methylester (SP-OMe). Moreover, the effects of netupitant and another selective NK1 antagonist (L-733,060) were studied in anesthetized guinea-pigs using two experimental models, the isovolumetric bladder contractions and…

Effects of CYP-induced cystitis on PACAP/VIP and receptor expression in micturition pathways and bladder function in mice with overexpression of NGF in urothelium.

We have previously demonstrated nerve growth factor (NGF) regulation of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP)/receptors in bladder reflex pathways using a transgenic mouse model of chronic NGF overexpression in the bladder using the urothelial-specific uroplakin II promoter. We have now explored the contribution of target-derived NGF in combination with cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced cystitis to determine whether additional changes in neuropeptides/receptors are observed in micturition reflex pathways due to the presence of additional inflammatory mediators in the urinary …

Comparison of pattern of breathing with other measures of induction of anaesthesia, using propofol, methohexital, and sevoflurane.

We assessed change of the pattern of breathing as a marker of induction of anaesthesia, using a method of maintaining spontaneous breathing throughout the induction period. We compared this index with a measure used clinically, the lash reflex, and measures used for drug investigations such as loss of grip of an object, cessation of finger tapping, and loss of arm tone. Ninety female patients (mean age 32 (17-63) yr, mean weight 63 (10) kg) were randomly allocated to induction of anaesthesia using propofol, methohexital, or sevoflurane. The i.v. agents were given by slow injection estimated to…

Influence of chemoreceptor stimuli on genioglossal response to negative pressure in humans.

Genioglossal muscle (GG) activity is modulated by both chemoreceptive and mechanoreceptive reflexes that help stabilize airway patency. We assessed the effects of blood gas changes, within the range encountered during mild obstructive apnea-arousal cycles, on GG activity and the GG reflex to upper airway negative pressure. Eighteen healthy adults were studied while awake under 5 conditions: (1) baseline (PET(CO(2)) = 40 mm Hg, Sa(O(2)) = 99%); (2) hypercapnia (PET(CO(2)) = 45 mm Hg); (3) hypocapnia (PET(CO(2)) = 35 mm Hg, induced via hyperventilation with an iron lung ventilator); (4) hypoxia …

Tear dynamics and dry eye.

Tears undergo four processes: production by the lacrimal gland, distribution by blinking, evaporation from the ocular surface and drainage through the nasolacrimal duct. Abnormalities in any of these steps can cause dry eye. There are two kinds of tear production, basic and reflex, which can be distinguished from each other by the Schirmer test with nasal stimulation. Reflex tearing is important because it supplies such essential components as EGF and vitamin A, whose deficiency may cause squamous metaplasia. There is no reflex tearing in Sjogren's syndrome because of destruction of the lacrim…

Intrahemispheric and interhemispheric spread of cerebral cortical myoclonic activity and its relevance to epilepsy.

Nine patients with cortical myoclonus (due to various pathologies), in whom movement of one limb induced bilateral limb jerks, were investigated. Three of these patients also had bilateral cortical reflex myoclonus when one limb was subjected to an electrical stimulus. The relative latencies to onset of electromyogram (EMG) activity in various ipsilateral and contralateral muscles in action and reflex jerks were studied. Bilateral reflex and action jerks induced by unilateral electrical stimuli or limb movement were not synchronous. EMG activity was usually recorded in the muscles of the stimu…

The female urethral closure mechanism during physical stress.

The closure of the urethra under the condition of stress is the result of a reflex contraction of the urethral rhabdosphincter and pelvic floor muscles. This is likely induced by activity of the abdominal muscles due to a sudden increase in abdominal pressure. This reflex contraction with an increase of urethral pressure occurs a few milliseconds before an increase in intraabdominal pressure. The urethral pressure increase during stress is only possible with fixation of the urethra by the pubourethral ligaments (PUL), facilitating urethral kinking. The highest and most important increase in pr…

Clinical symptoms associated with laboratory findings and placental histopathology in full-term, non-infected neonates born to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive mothers.

This study comprehensively examines clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, and placental pathology in 40 cases of singleton full-term SARS-CoV-2 negative neonates. Their mothers, previously healthy, with uncomplicated pregnancies, were infected peripartum and presented COVID-19 symptoms of various severity. Neonates had predominately diarrhea, the yet unreported absent sucking reflex, elevated COVID-19 inflammatory and ischemia/asphyxia markers as serum ferritin, interleukin-6 and cardiac troponin-T, while placentas demonstrated mild vascular and/or inflammatory lesions. We hypothesize that t…

INCREASED BLINKING MAY BE A PRECURSOR OF BLEPHAROSPASM: A LONGITUDINAL STUDY.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this five-year longitudinal study was to investigate whether patients with increased blinking develop orbicularis oculi muscle spasms. METHODS: Eleven patients who initially manifested increased blinking alone were clinically and neurophysiologically re-evaluated five years later. RESULTS: By the five-year follow-up assessment, nine of the 11 patients had developed orbicularis oculi muscle spasms. The blink reflex recovery cycle became abnormal whereas somatosensory temporal discrimination, already abnormal at the first evaluation, did not significantly change. CONCLUS…

Overt responses during covert orienting.

A distributed network of cortical and subcortical brain areas controls our oculomotor behavior. This network includes the superior colliculus (SC), which coordinates an ancient visual grasp reflex via outputs that ramify widely within the brainstem and spinal cord, accessing saccadic and other premotor and autonomic circuits. In this Review, we discuss recent results correlating subliminal SC activity in the absence of saccades with diverse components of the visual grasp reflex, including neck and limb muscle recruitment, pupil dilation, and microsaccade propensity. Such subtle manifestations …

[Mirror behaviors in dementia: the many mirror signs].

Mirror behaviors in advanced dementia are: the mirror sign of Abely and Delmas, where the patient stares at his face (environment-driven behavior of Lhermitte); non recognition of the self in the mirror (autoprosopagnosia and/or delirious auto-Capgras); mirror agnosia of Ramachandran and Binkofski where the patient do not understand the concept of mirror and its use; the psychovisual reflex, or reflex pursuit of the eyes when passively moving a minrror in front of a patient (intact vision); mirror writing (procedural learning). We describe four demented patients with mirror behaviors assessing…
