A Prospective Comparative Study of Arthroscopic Versus Mini-Open Latarjet Procedure With a Minimum 2-Year Follow-up.

PURPOSE: To compare postoperative pain during the first postoperative week and the position of the coracoid bone block at the anterior aspect of the glenoid after the arthroscopic and the mini-open Latarjet procedure. The secondary purpose was to assess functional results and recurrence after at least 2 years of follow-up. METHODS: This comparative prospective study included patients who underwent a Latarjet-Bristow procedure for anterior shoulder instability in 2012. The Latarjet procedure was performed by a mini-open approach (G1) in one center and by an arthroscopic approach (G2) in the ot

Abnormal translation in SLAP lesions on magnetic resonance imaging abducted externally rotated view.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure in vivo axial-plane translation of the glenohumeral joint by use of magnetic resonance imaging in patients with and without SLAP lesions between the conventional adducted neutral rotation (AD) view and an abducted externally rotated (ABER) view. METHODS: Seven patients with an intraoperative SLAP lesion that was unstable and required repair were selected into the SLAP group. Although they did not have normal shoulders, 15 patients were selected into the control or comparison group, most of whom had rotator cuff pathology. The glenohumeral cont

Optimising the utility of patient-reported outcome measurements during recovery after orthopaedic extremity fractures: protocol for a multicentre prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Recovery after extremity fracture is influenced by injury-related impairments, functional capacity, symptom severity and psychosocial well-being, emphasising the need for patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Despite increasing adoption of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) and legacy PROMs in orthopaedic research, substantial knowledge gaps remain regarding their measurement properties, comparability and clinical utility, particularly in fracture populations. Our aim is to develop meaningful guidance to clinicians regarding the use of PROMs in

Ultra-short and zero echo time MRI sequences for MSK investigation: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has limited capacity to visualise cortical bone due to its low proton density and short decay time. Recently developed ultrashort (UTE) and zero-echo time (ZTE) sequences enable bone imaging without ionising radiation. This study aims to identify the key technical parameters, advantages, and limitations of UTE and ZTE for musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging. METHODS: JBI methodology was applied, and three databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL) were selected to identify articles published after 2005 (French-English). Keywordsand MeSH terms related to UT

Clinical and health-economic impact of orthogeriatric care models in Belgium: A population-based data registry study.

UNLABELLED: This study evaluated six orthogeriatric care models for older fracture patients in Belgium. Integrated care on surgical wards reduced emergency department visits, while consultation on request on geriatric wards yielded the highest survival. All models had comparable costs except for integrated care on a geriatric ward, which was more expensive. PURPOSE: This study assessed the (cost-)effectiveness of systematic collaboration (systematic consultation or integrated care) between surgical and geriatric teams compared to consultation on request in Belgium. METHODS: This registry-bas

Adhesive Capsulitis of the Shoulder.

Adhesive capsulitis is characterized by limited range of motion (ROM) due to adhesions within the glenohumeral joint capsule. The pathophysiology is suspected to involve an inflammatory reaction progressing to fibrotic contracture. Active fibroblastic proliferation can be found on histologic analysis, with some transformation to myofibroblasts, ultimately creating collagen in the form of a thick band. Clinically, adhesive capsulitis is classified into phases: freezing, frozen, and thawing. Risk factors include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prior fractures, shoulder and cervical spine surgery, and

A prospective randomized control trial comparing outcomes of casting, pinning, and plating for distal end of radius fractures (AO type A2, A3, C1, or C2) in the elderly population.

PURPOSE: With this prospective randomized control trial (RCT), we aim to provide the outcome analyses of the three most used treatment modalities for distal end of radius (DER) fracture management in the elderly. METHODS: A prospective randomized control trial was performed. Fifty-two patients with DER fractures (AO A2, A3, C1, or C2) were randomized to the casting (n = 17), percutaneous pinning (n = 18), and the volar plating group (n = 17). Radiological measurements measured were radial inclination (RI), radial height (RH), volar tilt (VT), and ulnar variance (UV). The outcome was measured

Treatment outcomes of applying external fixator on distal radius fractures: a randomized clinical trial to compare between two directions of force exertion in parallel to radius shaft and perpendicular to the distal radius articular surface.

BACKGROUND: External fixation has been one of the conventional managements of unstable distal radius fracture. The main aim of this paper is to compare two methods of applying distractive force along the radius shaft versus perpendicular to the distal radius articular surface. DESIGN: Sixty patients with unstable distal radius fracture were included in present clinical trial and randomized in two groups, using block randomization method. In group A (first arm), distraction force was exerted parallel to the radius shaft. In group B (second arm), the external fixator was adjusted based on radia

Radial distraction may reduce the incidence of ulnar-sided wrist pain in ulna-plus morphology intraoperatively following distal radius fractures fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Fixed-angle plate fixation can be an effective treatment for distal radius fractures (DRFs). However, patients with existing ulnar positive variance might be at risk of developing symptoms of ulnar-sided wrist pain (USWP). Ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) is one of the main treatment options for USWP. We hypothesized that a limited radial distraction at the fracture site at the time of surgery for DRF would be functionally equivalent to an indirect USO and that if this were done in a patient with an ulnar plus morphology it could potentially decrease the risk of USWP. METHODS: T

Can We Predict Feto-Maternal Adverse Outcomes of Vacuum Extraction?

Introduction Vacuum extraction (VE) is an important modality in modern obstetrics, yet sometimes results in maternal or neonatal adverse outcomes, which can cause a lifetime disability. We aimed to characterize potential risk factors for adverse outcomes that in retrospect would have led the physician to avoid the procedure. Materials and Methods Retrospective cohort of 3331 singleton pregnancies, ≥ 34 w delivered by VE. 263 deliveries (7.9%) incurred a VE-related feto-maternal adverse outcome, defined as one or more of the following: 3-4th-degree perineal laceration, subgaleal hematoma, intra

Surgical Treatment of Distal Radial Fractures with External Fixation Versus Volar Locking Plate: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The use of volar locking plate fixation (VLP) for unstable extra-articular distal radial fractures has increased in the last decades. External fixation (EF) is less frequently used. This change of surgical approach has only to some extent been evidence-based. METHODS: In this multicenter, randomized controlled trial, we compared VLP and EF in patients between 18 and 70 years of age who had a displaced extra-articular distal radial fracture (OTA/AO type A3). The patients were examined at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year postoperatively. The primary outcome measure was the Patient-Rate

Hammer blows to the head.

Hammer blows cause serious, often fatal injuries, especially when massive blunt violence is targeted at the head region. The evaluation of the injury potential depends not only on the body region hit, but also on the characteristics of the hammer as a weapon and on the physical characteristics of the attacker. This study aimed at elucidating the dependency between the physical constitution of a perpetrator and the intensity of hammer blows, thus to verify or refute this seemingly obvious interrelation sometimes expressed in the saying that a "strong hand strikes harder". For this purpose, 113
