A Sleep Hygiene and Relaxation Intervention for Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance and fatigue are common and distressing pediatric cancer-related outcomes. Sleep hygiene education and relaxation techniques are recommended to improve sleep in healthy children and adult cancer survivors. No studies have tested these interventions to improve sleep and fatigue for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the home setting. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to establish the feasibility and acceptability of a sleep hygiene and relaxation intervention to improve sleep and fatigue for children receiving maintenance chemotherapy for ALL. Understanding the direction of the relationship between white matter hyperintensities of vascular origin, sleep quality, and chronic kidney disease-Results from the Atahualpa Project.

OBJECTIVE: The burden of cerebral small vessel disease, sleep disorders, and chronic kidney disease is on the rise in remote rural settings. However, information on potential links between these conditions is limited. We aimed to assess the relationships between these conditions in community-dwelling older adults living in rural Ecuador. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Atahualpa residents aged ≥60 years were offered a brain MRI. A venous blood sample was obtained for serum creatinine determination. Baseline interviews and procedures were directed to assess demographics, cardiovascular risk factors, and

Physiological melatonin levels in healthy older people: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Melatonin plays a major role in maintaining circadian rhythm. Previous studies showed that its secretion pattern and levels could be disturbed in persons with dementia, psychiatric disorders, sleep disorders or with cancer. Also ageing is a factor that could alter melatonin levels, although previous research provides contradicting results. As melatonin supplementation is increasingly applied in older persons as sleep medication, it is important to know if melatonin levels decrease in healthy ageing and/or secretion patterns change. The objective of this study is to determine physiol

Sleep mediates the link between resiliency and behavioural problems in children at high and low risk for alcoholism.

Children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk for developing substance use problems. Having a parent with any mental illness increases the risk for sleep disorders in children. Using actigraphy, this study characterized sleep in children of alcoholics and community controls over a period of 1 week. This study further examined whether sleep characteristics of the children mediated the relationship between self-regulation indices (i.e. undercontrol and resiliency) and outcome measures of function (e.g. problem behaviours and perceived conflict at home). Eighty-two children (53 boys, 29 girls

Promoting Sleep Health Among Families of Young Children in Head Start: Protocol for a Social-Ecological Approach.

Inadequate or poor quality sleep in early childhood impairs social-emotional and cognitive function via effects on the developing brain and increases obesity risk via hormonal and endocrine effects. The prevalence of short sleep duration, behavioral sleep problems, and sleep-disordered breathing among children aged 3 to 5 years is 20% to 50%. Healthy sleep habits increase sleep duration and prevent behavioral sleep problems. Awareness of sleep-disordered breathing symptoms leads to its timely treatment. We designed a study that aims to empower families whose children are in early childhood pro

The effects of sleep extension and sleep hygiene advice on sleep and depressive symptoms in adolescents: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep problems are common and persistent during adolescence and can have negative effects on adolescents' mood. To date, studies that investigate the effects of sleep extension on adolescents' sleep and depressive symptoms are still lacking. This study aims to investigate the effects of gradual sleep extension combined with sleep hygiene advice in adolescents with chronic sleep reduction on objectively measured sleep, self-reported sleep problems and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Fifty-five adolescents with chronic sleep reduction (mean age: 15.44 years; 85.5% females) were include

Prospective assessment of nocturnal awakenings in a case series of treatment-seeking chronic insomnia patients: a pilot study of subjective and objective causes.

BACKGROUND: The cause of nocturnal awakenings in patients with chronic insomnia is rarely researched. This study prospectively assessed the etiology of nocturnal awakenings (subjectively and objectively) among patients with insomnia at a private, community-based sleep medical center. METHODS: Twenty adult patients with chronic insomnia enrolled between April 2008 and February 2010 met diagnostic criteria for an insomnia disorder, never previously visited a sleep specialist or underwent sleep testing, and reported no classic sleep disordered breathing symptoms. Patients completed validated sca

Sleep disturbances in people with epilepsy; prevalence, impact and treatment.

The interaction between epilepsy and sleep is thoroughly studied and is very complex. This review focuses on prevalence, impact on quality of life and effects of treatment of sleep disorders on the course of epilepsy. Self-reported sleep disturbances in people with epilepsy are about twice as prevalent as in healthy controls. People with epilepsy with sleep disturbances have a significant impairment of quality of life compared to those with no sleep disturbances. In children with epilepsy, sleep problems may lead to detrimental effects on daytime behavior and cognition. Most is known about obs

The impact of obstructive sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness on work limitation.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) participate in the work force. However, the impact of OSA and sleepiness on work performance is unclear. METHODS: To address this issue, we administered the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Work Limitations Questionnaire (WLQ), and an occupational survey to patients undergoing full-night polysomnography for the investigation of sleep-disordered breathing. Of 498 patients enrolled in the study, 428 (86.0%) completed the questionnaires. Their mean age+/-standard deviation (SD) was 49+/-12 years, mean body mass index (BMI) was 31+/-

[Evaluation of a simplified maintenance of wakefulness test for the diagnosis of daytime sleepiness].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess a simplified maintenance of wakefulness test (Oxford SLEep Resistance test, OSLER test) in evaluating excessive daytime sleepiness. METHODS: Seventy-four snorers with or without obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) were studied. Two OSLER tests were performed in the afternoon with a gap of 30 minutes. Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) was also recorded. An overnight sleep study using a multi-channel system was performed to distinguish nonapneic snorers (snorer group, n = 43) from OSAHS patients (OSAHS group, n = 31). The OSLER test

Sleep apnea and excessive daytime somnolence induced by vagal nerve stimulation.

Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy affects respiration during sleep and can interrupt sleep. VNS has also been noted to improve excessive daytime sleepiness. The authors present a patient who developed excessive daytime sleepiness after VNS placement, as a consequence of apneas and arousals associated with intermittent electrical stimulation of the left vagus nerve.

Initiation of fluoxetine in a pediatric patient with Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA: Early observations.

Fluoxetine has been identified as a potential treatment for mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA (MPS IIIA), a debilitating and progressive lysosomal storage disorder for which no treatments are approved. In the MPS IIIA mouse model, fluoxetine decreases the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans and aggregated autophagic substrates, reducing inflammation, and slowing cognitive deterioration. 1 We treated a single patient, 6 years old, under off-label prescription of fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The primary endpoint was safety. Secondary exploratory assessments included urine

Mutant prion protein expression causes motor and memory deficits and abnormal sleep patterns in a transgenic mouse model.

A familial form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is linked to the D178N/V129 prion protein (PrP) mutation. Tg(CJD) mice expressing the mouse homolog of this mutant PrP synthesize a misfolded form of the mutant protein, which is aggregated and protease resistant. These mice develop clinical and pathological features reminiscent of CJD, including motor dysfunction, memory impairment, cerebral PrP deposition, and gliosis. Tg(CJD) mice also display electroencephalographic abnormalities and severe alterations of sleep-wake patterns strikingly similar to those seen in a human patient carrying the

Aircraft noise and mental health: I. Prevalence of individual symptoms.

A domiciliary survey (sample size circa 6000) was conducted in areas of different aircraft noise exposure affected by London (Heathrow) Airport. Respondents were urban dwellers age 16+. Since no differences were found in the prevalence of manifest psychiatric disorders, the frequency of 27 individual acute and chronic symptoms was investigated. Many acute symptoms showed an increase with noise, and this was particularly evident for waking at night, irritability, depression, difficulty in getting to sleep, swollen ankles, burns/cuts/minor accidents, and skin troubles. Two chronic symptoms, tinn
