Virtual Reality-Based Social Musical Exergame Guided by Self-Determination Theory for Young Adults With Depression and Anxiety: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety frequently emerge during late adolescence and young adulthood; however, many conventional and app-based interventions struggle to sustain engagement. Virtual reality (VR) exergaming, music-based activities, and social interaction each show promise for supporting young people's mental health, but their combined therapeutic value remains insufficiently tested. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a 6-week VR-based social musical exergame for reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms in young adults. The secondary objectives are to explore…

Case series of aripiprazole monotherapy in bipolar disorder with delayed sleep-wake phase syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) who also experience delayed sleep-wake phase (DSWP) disorder/syndrome may tend to be younger, have a higher risk of relapse, and exhibit more severe impairments in social functioning. However, few studies have explored this area, and there are currently no established treatment guidelines, prompting us to investigate this further through a case series. METHODS: We report on a chart review of 15 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) and delayed sleep-wake phase (DSWP) syndrome, who received Aripiprazole (APZ) monotherapy for 12 to 135 w

Chemical Deception and Structural Adaptation in Microdon (Diptera, Syrphidae, Microdontinae), a Genus of Hoverflies Parasitic on Social Insects.

Various organisms, especially arthropods, are able to live as parasites in ant nests and to prey upon ant broods without eliciting any aggressive behaviour in the hosts. Understanding how these intruders are able to break the ants' communication codes in their favour represents a challenging and intriguing evolutionary question. We studied the chemical strategies of three European hoverfly species, Microdon mutabilis (parasitic on Formica cunicularia), M. analis (parasitic on Lasius emarginatus) and M. devius (parasitic on L. distinguendus). The peculiar slug-like larvae of these three species

Impact of behavioral genetic evidence on the perceptions and dispositions of child abuse victims.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral genetic research is beginning to elucidate some of the genetic contributions to human behaviors - including criminal and other problematic behaviors - and their interactions with environmental influences. One of the most studied of these interactions involves low-activity alleles of the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene, which appear to increase the risk of antisocial behavior among males in the wake of childhood maltreatment. Some scholars have suggested that decisions about disposition of child abuse victims should be shaped by these findings, but the extent of public su

Early community context, genes, and youth body mass index trajectories: an investigation of gene-community interplay over early life course.

PURPOSE: To investigate additive and interactive influences of community adversity and cumulative genetic sensitivity on youth body mass index (BMI) trajectories over adolescence and young adulthood. METHODS: We used latent growth curve modeling to examine BMI trajectories over three waves (1995, 2001, and 2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 14,563). We measured genetic sensitivity by a cumulative index of genes associated with serotonin and dopamine functions. RESULTS: Community adversity was positively associated with the initial level and rate of change in B

Gene by environment interactions influencing reading disability and the inattentive symptom dimension of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Reading disability (RD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are comorbid and genetically correlated, especially the inattentive dimension of ADHD (ADHD-I). However, previous research indicates that RD and ADHD enter into opposite gene by environment (G × E) interactions. METHODS: This study used behavioral genetic methods to replicate these opposite G × E interactions in a sample of same-sex monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs from the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center (CLDRC; DeFries et al., 1997) and to test a genetic hypothesis for why these opposi

Factors associated with loneliness and social capital in a large volunteer sample of adults in England.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a pressing public health concern with wide-ranging impacts on mental, physical and social wellbeing. Building on the Measuring Loneliness in England (INTERACT) Study which represents one of the largest volunteer-based studies of loneliness and social disconnection conducted in the United Kingdom (UK), we explore demographic, social and health-related factors associated with loneliness and social capital, using multiple validated measures. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from 135,725 community-dwelling adults across England. Loneliness was assessed using bot

Cerebellum and social abilities: A structural and functional connectivity study in a transdiagnostic sample.

The cerebellum has been involved in social abilities and autism. Given that the cerebellum is connected to the cortex via the cerebello-thalamo-cortical loop, the connectivity between the cerebellum and cortical regions involved in social interactions, that is, the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) has been studied in individuals with autism, who suffer from prototypical deficits in social abilities. However, existing studies with small samples of categorical, case-control comparisons have yielded inconsistent results due to the inherent heterogeneity of autism, suggesting that investigat…

The revival of spiritual practices: factors influencing the "seeking deities and offering prayers" behavior of China's Generation Z on social media in an atheistic context.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, there has been a growing focus on the study of how religion and technology intersect, particularly withi … ce. In contemporary China, young people face immense pressures stemming from workplace competition, social interactions, and economic burdens. Social media offers these young individuals broader opportunities for connection, community formation, and identity construction, as well as various possibilities for organizing their social lives. Consequently, on one hand, …

Microglia promote vascular remodeling in a mouse model of chronic stress.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mental illness affecting over 350 million people globally. Chronic stress is a major risk factor for MDD and is associated with increased vascular dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. While inflammation is often implicated in these pathologies, the specific interactions between immune cells and the cerebral vasculature in the context of chronic stress remain poorly understood. We employed a chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model in mice to investigate immune-vascular interactions in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We also used a subt

Peer deviance, parental divorce, and genetic risk in the prediction of drug abuse in a nationwide Swedish sample: evidence of environment-environment and gene-environment interaction.

IMPORTANCE: Peer deviance (PD) strongly predicts externalizing psychopathologic conditions but has not been previously assessable in population cohorts. We sought to develop such an index of PD and to clarify its effects on risk of drug abuse (DA). OBJECTIVES: To examine how strongly PD increases the risk of DA and whether this community-level liability indicator interacts with key DA risk factors at the individual and family levels. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Studies of future DA registration in 1,401,698 Swedish probands born from January 1, 1970, through December 31, 1985, and the

Dogs with a large vocabulary of object labels learn new labels by overhearing like 1.5-year-old infants.

Children as young as 18 months can acquire novel words by overhearing third-party interactions. Demonstrating similar learning processes in nonhuman species would indicate that the social-cognitive skills supporting this process are not exclusively human but may have evolved, or can develop, in other species, offering valuable insights into the origins of language-related cognition. In this study, we demonstrated that a small group of Gifted Word Learner dogs, which possess an extensive vocabulary of object labels, can learn new labels by overhearing their owners' interactions. Moreover, we sh

[Perinatal beliefs: Neurocognitive mechanisms and cultural specificities].

Perinatal beliefs contribute to the experience of pregnancy and the process of parenthood. Many of these perinatal beliefs have been perpetuated and evolved over time and throughout the world, exerting their influence on the behavior of pregnant women in interaction with medical recommendations. These beliefs generally offer explanations for gravidic and puerperal phenomena, helping to reduce the uncertainty of parents faced with the biological, psychological and social transitions of pregnancy. But certain beliefs can also be harmful, and alter the maternal experience of pregnancy and postpar

Disparate vantage points: Race, gender, county context, and attitudes about harsh punishments in the US.

In this paper, I use data from the General Social Survey, FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics, and other sources to consider differences in attitudes about punishment among four groups-Black men, Black women, White men, and White women-as well as how these differences vary according to county crime rates. Centering my expectations about group-specific attitudes within conflict theory and prior empirical findings, I am guided by the presumption that race and gender are cultural categories that shape attitudes about punishment by influencing our interactions with the criminal justice system,

State-dependent and environmental modulation of brain hyperthermic effects of psychoactive drugs of abuse.

Hyperthermia is a known effect induced by psychomotor stimulants and pathological hyperthermia is a prominent symptom of acute intoxication … odulation of these temperature effects under conditions that mimic basic aspects of human drug use (social interaction, moderately warm environments). These data could be important for understanding the potential dangers of each drug and ultimately preventing adverse health complications associated with acute drug-induced intoxication.

Mothers and infants exposed to intimate partner violence compensate.

Reasons for the developmental variability in children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) are unclear and under studied. This article presents exploratory findings on (a) the potential impact of IPV on mother-child relationships and child development and (b) the association between these maternal-child relationship impacts and child development. The fit of findings with compensatory, spillover, and compartmentalization hypotheses was explored. Participants were 49 mothers and 51 children younger than 3 years of age affected by IPV. Data were collected on maternal-child interactions, chi
