Access to Ambulatory Cardiology Care: Learning from Families Managing Pediatric Heart Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Missed ambulatory care visits can lead to worse outcomes and greater use of emergent care for children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease. Through descriptive qualitative inquiry, we explored the barriers to and facilitators of pediatric cardiology ambulatory care for children with complex heart disease. STUDY DESIGN: English- and Spanish-speaking caregivers of children with complex heart disease who missed ≥1 clinic visit at a single, free-standing children's hospital were recruited, with purposeful sampling of Black and Hispanic patients. Semistructured interviews

Advancing equity in applied health and care research training: a reflexive perspective on the NIHR INSIGHT programme.

Health inequities in the United Kingdom disproportionately affect racialised, globally marginalized, and working-class communities. Research training programmes shape who becomes a researcher, which questions are prioritized and which knowledge is recognized as legitimate. This Perspective provides a reflexive, practice-informed account of the NIHR Inspiring Students into Research Training (INSIGHT) Programme across three South East England institutions: the University of Kent (MSc Applied Health and Care Research), the University of Brighton (MRes), and the University of Chichester (MRes). Influence of Social Support on Patients' Adherence to Activity Advice in Low Back Pain: A Double-Blinded Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Single interventions of any kind for patients with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) are reported to be unsuccessful. In the treatment of NSLBP, physiotherapists advise patients to become more active, since an active lifestyle has a positive effect on patients' reported outcomes. However, the literature mentions poor adherence to this advice. Therefore, as a result of Intervention Mapping, this study investigates the influence of social support on adherence. METHODS: In a double-blind randomised controlled trial, patients were randomised over an intervention and a con

Cosmetic enhancement as social signaling: context-dependent effects on facial evaluation in China and the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Human observers rapidly infer socially relevant traits from faces, yet these judgments can be altered by appearance modifications such as cosmetic enhancement. It remains unclear whether cosmetic enhancement produces similar effects across different dimensions of facial evaluation and whether these effects are interpreted consistently across cultural contexts. The present study examined how cosmetic enhancement influences facial social evaluation among Chinese and British perceivers. METHODS: In a preregistered mixed-design experiment, 100 Chinese participants and 99 British par

Suicidality among people with mild cognitive impairment: a sustematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a clinical stage between the expected cognitive decline of healthy ageing and dementia. People with MCI experience functional decline, social isolation and emotional symptoms that may increase suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB). We aimed to explore the relationship between MCI and STB, as well as clinical and socioeconomic factors that may contribute to it. METHODS: To achieve our aims we carried out a comprensive systematic review of the existing scientific literature. We searched the following electronic databases up to June 2024: PubMed, S

Beyond the Check Box: Development of the Nutrition Health Related Social Need Assessment and Referral Tool (N-HART).

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity screeners focus on identifying a financial barrier to accessing food. Other social and medical factors influence an individual's nutritional status and the need for food provision support. Yet, there are no existing tools that elicit the various life factors that influence food and nutrition needs and further identify relevant resources to address those needs. OBJECTIVE: To develop the Nutrition Health Related Social Need Assessment and Referral Tool (N-HART) to facilitate individualized referrals to food and nutrition resources, based on both medical and social fa

The novel associations between frailty and neurodevelopmental outcomes in CHD.

OBJECTIVES: "Frailty" is associated with worse outcomes in adult cardiology. There is limited data on the associations between frailty and outcomes in paediatric cardiology. We aimed to define the prevalence of frailty and identify associations between frailty and neurodevelopmental and quality-of-life outcomes in high-risk paediatric cardiac populations. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study included patients 4-18 years seen in a neurodevelopmental programme between 6/2017 and 11/2022. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from medical records. As part of the routine care, physical

Risk Factors for Non-Consensual Sexting Among Adolescents and Emerging Adults: An Extension of the Routine Activity Theory Perspective.

Adolescence and emerging adulthood are developmental phases in which the exploration of one's own sexuality takes on a high priority, which can increase the risk of risky sexual behavior. Due to technological advances, (non-consensual) sexting has increased among young people and has become an integral part of their sexual socialization. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine non-consensual sexting (both victimization and perpetration) among adolescents and emerging adults and to identify potential risk factors associated with non-consensual sexting using routine activity t

Models of stress in nonhuman primates and their relevance for human psychopathology and endocrine dysfunction.

Stressful life events have been linked to the onset of severe psychopathology and endocrine dysfunction in many patients. Moreover, vulnerability to the later development of such disorders can be increased by stress or adversity during development (e.g., childhood neglect, abuse, or trauma). This review discusses the methodological features and results of various models of stress in nonhuman primates in the context of their potential relevance for human psychopathology and endocrine dysfunction, particularly mood disorders and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) sy
