Barriers and Facilitators to Physical Activity Participation Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors: A Mixed-Method Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) is essential in cancer rehabilitation. Worryingly, PA compliance among colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors … ators of PA participation for CRC survivors included improvement in cancer-related symptoms, enough social support from family and friends, and perceived benefits of PA. Increasing awareness of and referral to support services in advanced breast cancer: a global expert review and call-to-action for 2025-2035 (Goal 7).

Advanced breast cancer (ABC) represents a significant global health challenge, not only due to its high mortality rates but also because of the profound physical, emotional, and social burden it imposes on patients. Support services - encompassing psychological, social and peer support, complementary and integrative therapies, wellness and lifestyle support, genetic counseling, survivorship programs, palliative and end-of-life care - are essential to addressing these challenges and ensuring that individuals with ABC receive holistic, person-centered care throughout their disease journey. This

Daily Support to Close Friends and Mood Among Older Men and Women.

Support provision may enhance older adults' well-being. Yet support for friends, a voluntary and socially engaging behavior, remains relatively understudied. This study examines daily support to close friends and its within-person links to mood, focusing on gender differences. Older adults (n = 180, Mean age = 74.02, 57% female) completed 5-6 days of ecological momentary assessments, reporting on their positive and negative mood every 3 hours and support exchanges daily. Emotional support to friends being most common, followed by advice and practical help. Findings showed men were less likely

Normalizing discussions of mental health in forensic anthropology.

Traditionally, forensic anthropologists worked on secured scenes or in academic labs. Today, practitioners are more involved in casework, working alongside forensic pathologists during autopsies, mass disasters, and interviewing relatives. This expanded role brings practitioners into closer and repeated contact with the emotional aspects of death and associated vicarious trauma (VT). While many forensic disciplines address the impact of VT, the effects on forensic anthropologists remain underexplored. The authors surveyed practitioners (N = 114) who worked with human remains in a medicolegal c

Optimization of a preeclampsia early warning model driven by psychosocial factors: a five-year cohort study and its clinical impact.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to optimize a preeclampsia early warning model by integrating psychosocial factors (such as prenatal psychological stress and social support) with traditional clinical indicators to construct a more precise warning tool and analyze its impact on maternal disease burden. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included maternal data from obstetric inpatients between January 2018 and December 2023 at a single institution. Controls were selected via propensity score matching (PSM) at a 1:2 ratio. A preeclampsia early warning model incorporating multiple clinica…

Collecting real-time infant feeding and support experience: co-participatory pilot study of mobile health methodology.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding rates in the UK have remained stubbornly low despite long-term intervention efforts. Social support is a key, theoretically grounded intervention method, yet social support has been inconsistently related to improved breastfeeding. Understanding of the dynamics between infant feeding and social support is currently limited by retrospective collection of quantitative data, which prohibits causal inferences, and by unrepresentative sampling of mothers. In this paper, we present a case-study presenting the development of a data collection methodology designed to address …

Determinant Factors of Stress in Caregivers of Patients With Schizophrenia: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia face ongoing psychological and emotional burdens due to the chronic and relapsing nature of the disorder and the complexity of caregiving. Prolonged exposure to caregiving stress characterized by emotional exhaustion, role overload, and lack of social support has been consistently associated with poor mental health outcomes among caregivers, including depression and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess stress levels among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and identify the key determinants of caregiver stress. METHODS:…

The psychological mechanisms of older adults being defrauded by healthcare products: a mixed methods research study.

The current study seeks to investigate the psychological mechanisms that lead older adults to fall victim to healthcare product scams. Initi … mentation, conformity, emotional manipulation, trust in repetitive information, and manipulation by social support. These tendencies lead them to form risky consumption goals-pursuing positive effects, avoiding negative effects, pursuing physical well-being, pursuing product credibility, and avoiding medical treatment. The Role of Social Connections on Suicide Attempts After Heroin Detoxification Treatment in South Africa: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Seventy-seven percent of suicides occur in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), and this risk increases threefold for those with substance use disorder. Theoretically, the interplay of sociodemographic and cultural resources embedded in an individual's setting can raise or lower risk for suicide. We therefore aim to observe the associations between available social connection resources: social network size and quality, social support, and conflicts, on future 3- and 9-month suicide attempts following heroin detoxification treatment. METHODS: Prospective observational study fro…

A Descriptive Qualitative Study of Breastfeeding Challenges, Enablers and Confidence Among Women With Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are at a significantly increased risk for chronic hypertension and premature cardiovascular disease. Although breastfeeding may have cardiovascular benefits, those with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy tend to have lower rates of breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity. A deeper understanding of their breastfeeding experiences is necessary to inform effective interventions that support lactation. RESEARCH AIM: This study aimed to explore breastfeeding challenges, enablers, and factors influencing breastfeeding con

Physical activity partners for women with cardiovascular disease risk: Proof-of-concept trial with daily assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) increases sharply for women during midlife (aged 40-65). Physical activity (PA) is key during this time, though lack of social support is a primary barrier. The present study combined PA coaching with the formation of PA partnerships by pairing participants with each other for support during an 8-week behavioral PA intervention. This proof-of-concept study assessed feasibility, acceptability, and clinically significant change in the outcome and mediator of interest. METHOD: Women in midlife with ≥ 1 risk factor for CVD (e.g., hypertension; N = …

Genetic education and peer support among Ashkenazi Jewish women in the United States at risk for and surviving with breast cancer.

Ashkenazi Jewish women are at significantly increased risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) due to the high prevalence of BRCA founder variants. Community-based organizations (CBOs) offer culturally tailored support through programs like peer support and genetic education, but limited research has explored how these services are offered and utilized in this population. Therefore, we conducted a secondary analysis of post-program survey data from N = 1054 women served by a national cancer support organization. Among high-risk Ashkenazi Jewish women (N = 429), we examined patterns

Problem Gambling Transmission. An Eight-wave Longitudinal Study on Problem Gambling Among Affected Others.

There is growing recognition that those close to someone with problem gambling experience stress and strain. Research suggests they may also be at risk of developing gambling problems themselves, but this remains an underexplored area. The present study examined how exposure to problem gambling within family or friend networks relates to affected others' own gambling, and whether strong social connections reduce this risk. Using an eight-wave longitudinal dataset (N = 1530) with hybrid multilevel regression modeling, we analyzed within-person and between-person effects of exposure to a family
