Thirty tibial tubercle osteotomies were performed to obtain exposure and facilitate patellar tracking in 29 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty. The thickness and width of the bone fragment were gradually tapered from proximal to distal. Fixation was obtained with three or four titanium screws. Average follow-up period was 18 months. Twenty-nine of the osteotomies healed primarily. In one patient, postoperative displacement of the tibial tubercle developed requiring additional screw and suture fixation. We collected peri-implant sulcus fluid by capillary tubes from sites around titanium osseointegrated implants and determined the chondroitin sulfate released into the peri-implant sulcus fluid by high-performance liquid chromatography. Chondroitin sulfate was found in all peri-implant sulcus fluid samples, and its content was similar to that in gingival crevicular fluid obtained around natural teeth. A retrospective review of patients treated for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) by in situ screw fixation with a cannulated titanium screw was performed. Of the 18 hips with at least 1-year follow-up, windshield-wiper loosening of the cannulated screw in the femoral head had occurred in three. The influence on cobalt 60 dose distributions of typical metal parts used in oral and maxillofacial surgery was studied. Relative doses were determined by exposing x-ray films in a polystyrene phantom set-up containing samples of Vitallium, titanium, and stainless steel. Optical densities were converted to doses with the aid of sensitometric curves. Radial Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (rESWT) is applied as a conservative treatment modality in orthopedics, yet its effectiveness in addressing aseptic loosening of cementless joint prostheses remains unclear. We present a process for renewable ACN production using 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP), which can be produced microbially from sugars.
