Exploring the novel protein drug target BAG33339.1 of Porphyromonas gingivalis: an integrative subtractive proteomics and structural dynamics study.

Porphyromonas gingivalis, a gram-negative, bacterium interacts favourably with host subgingival biofilms to cause adult tooth decay and loss. Consequently, the host is infested with an uncontrollable microbial community and a compromised immune system, ultimately leading to tissue damage and bone resorption. P. gingivalis has also been known to cause cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, Alzheimer's disease, depression, prostate and digestive system cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and adverse pregnancy outcomes with high detection frequencies. Rising concerns in the recent past, highlight the i

Mitochondrial Trifunctional Protein Deficiency due to HADHA Variants Masquerading as Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mitochondrial trifunctional protein deficiency (MTPD) is an inherited disorder of fatty acid β-oxidation caused by mutations in HADHA or HADHB genes. It typically presents with cardiomyopathy or hepatic failure in early childhood; however, it may rarely present in adulthood with the neuromyopathic form. METHODS: We describe a patient with MTPD with isolated neuropathy mimicking Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) as the first and only presenting symptom. Clinical and electrophysiological examinations were conducted, including nerve conduction studies, needle electromyograph

Transcriptomic Data Reveal Divergent Paths of Chitinase Evolution Underlying Dietary Convergence in Anteaters and Pangolins.

Ant-eating mammals represent a textbook example of convergent evolution. Among them, anteaters and pangolins exhibit the most extreme convergent phenotypes with complete tooth loss, elongated skulls, protruding tongues, and hypertrophied salivary glands producing large amounts of saliva. However, comparative genomic analyses have shown that anteaters and pangolins differ in their chitinase acidic gene (CHIA) repertoires, which potentially degrade the chitinous exoskeletons of ingested ants and termites. While the southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) harbors four functional CHIA paralogs (…

"Comparison of activated Platelet Rich Fibrin and Platelet Rich Fibrin in osseous regeneration of freshly extracted socket- A double blinded randomized clinical study".

INTRODUCTION: Dental extraction is a common oral surgery procedure, but it can lead to unpredictable changes in alveolar bone structure, which can complicate future rehabilitation with prostheses. Socket preservation aims to reduce bone and soft tissue loss after extraction and involves various techniques using different materials. Autogenous bone is considered the gold standard for grafts, while autologous platelet concentrates like platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) have been used for tissue healing. This study aims to radiographically assess the bone remodeling of freshly extracted socket filled wi

Role of residual mandibular teeth after computer-assisted mandibular reconstruction using a fibular flap.

BACKGROUND: Computer-assisted mandibular reconstruction after mandibulectomy enables accurate reconstruction of the occlusal positions between the maxilla and mandible. Understanding the remaining teeth condition is essential for sensory mastication in patients with numerous tooth loss. However, no studies have examined the dental status of the remaining mandible after computer-assisted mandibular reconstruction using a fibular flap. This study evaluated the role of residual teeth and other factors in effective acquisition of oral intake after computer-assisted mandibular reconstruction using …

Anti-oral streptococci and anti-biofilm properties of Etlingera pavieana essential oil and its bioactive compounds proposed for an alternative herbal mouthwash.

Oral streptococci are the major group of bacteria in the oral cavity. Some of their species cause oral diseases that may lead to tooth loss and quality-of-life reduction, such as dental caries. One of prevention techniques to promote oral health is rinsing mouthwash after toothbrushing. This study aimed to determine the potential uses of local food, also remedy, plant in Thailand called Reaw-Horm or Etlingera pavieana for alternative herbal mouthwash. The essential oil from E. pavieana rhizome (Eo) is used for anti-streptococci including Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus and anti…

Association Between Age at First Birth and Long-Term Dental Caries Experience Among Women in the United States.

Background: Pregnant women are at a higher risk of caries compared to nonpregnant women, and higher parity is a risk factor for untreated caries and tooth loss. However, it is unknown whether the timing of birth is associated with dental caries experience over time. Materials and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2011-2018. The study population included nonpregnant women 20 years of age or older, who had available data on the oral health examination and age at first birth (AFB). Dental caries experience was defin…

Association between oral health and handgrip strength: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: It is well-established that muscle mass strength is a key factor in healthy physical functioning and is necessary for an active l … een good oral health and strong HGS. Poor oral habits and oral conditions such as periodontitis and tooth loss inversely affected HGS, as did intrinsic factors like age and sex. CONCLUSIONS: Limited global studies and heterogeneous study data emerged as the major shortcomings in our systematic study review and precluded meta-analysis. Therefore, further stu …

Potential effects of specific gut microbiota on periodontal disease: a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease (PD) presents a substantial global health challenge, encompassing conditions from reversible gingivitis to irreversible periodontitis, often culminating in tooth loss. The gut-oral axis has recently emerged as a focal point, with potential gut microbiota dysbiosis exacerbating PD. METHODS: In this study, we employed a double-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomized (MR) approach to investigate the causal relationship between specific gut microbiota and periodontal disease (PD) and bleeding gum (BG) development, while exploring the interplay between periodont…

Removable dental prostheses and difficulties with chewing among frail individuals: Results from the Swiss SAPALDIA cohort.

Oral healthcare among the frail is an underestimated geriatric care element. While neglected oral health (OH) is a well-established risk fac … he results are in line with the hypothesis that (pre-) frail individuals may be more likely to have tooth loss restored by RDPs. Future longitudinal research needs to assess potential barriers to oral hygiene and fixed dental prostheses among (pre-) frail and to study their oral health-related quality of life.

Clinically relevant mouse models of severe spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress (SMARD1) is a lethal infantile disease, characterized by the loss of motor neurons leading to muscular atrophy, diaphragmatic paralysis, and weakness in the trunk and limbs. Mutations in IGHMBP2, a ubiquitously expressed DNA/RNA helicase, have been shown to cause a wide spectrum of motor neuron disease. Though mutations in IGHMBP2 are mostly associated with SMARD1, milder alleles cause the axonal neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2S (CMT2S), and some null alleles are potentially a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
