Pelvic fracture-related injuries of the bladder neck and prostate: their nature, cause and management.

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience of bladder neck injuries, which are a well recognized but rare consequence of pelvic fracture-related trauma to the lower urinary tract, as we have been unable to find any reference in the English literature to their specific nature, cause and management in adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the last 10 years we have treated 15 men with bladder neck injuries after pelvic fracture. Two were treated at our centre by delayed primary repair. Thirteen were initially treated elsewhere and presented to us 3 months to 5 years after their injury with intractable incon

Is an indwelling catheter necessary for bladder drainage after modified Burch colposuspension?

Catheterization is considered to be a mandatory procedure for adequate bladder drainage following an anti-incontinence operation until the recovery of normal voiding function occurs. We conducted this prospective study to challenge this practice. A total of 86 patients with genuine stress incontinence who underwent a modified Burch coplosuspension were randomized into two groups based on the day of operation. The study group consisted of 42 patients who had the transurethral Foley catheter removed postoperatively the next morning (Group A). The control group was composed of 43 patients who had

Clinical evaluation of the female lower urinary tract.

An accurate history has an important part in the clinical evaluation of women with symptoms referable to the lower urinary tract. Symptoms are suggestive of four broad categories: problems of incontinence, problems of bladder irritability, structural problems, and psychogenic problems. Specific conditions within each category are discussed in detail.

Clinical experience and video description of minimally invasive surgery for benign prostatic obstruction using the Schelin Catheter®.

Although designed for in-office use, water vapor thermal therapy (Rezum™) remains a painful procedure, and oral±intravenous sedation is often required. Schelin Catheter® (ProstaLund AB, Lund, Sweden) is an innovative bladder catheter that delivers local anesthesia to the prostate in a sterile transurethral way. We aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of Rezum™ for male lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction (LUTS/BPO) with local anesthesia delivered with Schelin® catheter, and to report its first step-by-step video description. A total of 15 patients were enro

Effects of a catheter-associated urinary tract infection prevention campaign on infection rate, catheter utilization, and health care workers' perspective at a community safety net hospital.

Preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections is in the forefront of health care quality. However, nurse and physician engagement is a common barrier in infection prevention efforts. After implementation of a multidisciplinary catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention campaign, we studied the impact of our campaign and showed its association with reducing the CAUTI rate and catheter utilization and the positive effect on health care workers' engagement and perspectives. CAUTI prevention campaigns can lead to lower infection rates and change health care workers' p
