BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections are associated with severe morbidity and mortality. The role of surgical sutures in the etiology of surgical site infection has been the objective of discussion for decades. This study used a standardized in vitro microbiologic model to assess bacterial adherence and the antibacterial activity of a triclosan-coated polyglactin 910 (braided) suture against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative clinical isolates that may infect surgical wounds.

Although total ankle replacement is routinely used for rheumatoid arthritis of the ankle, it has been hampered by early implant failures such as loosening and subsidence of the tibial component due to poor bone quality. To prevent this complication, total ankle replacement augmented by a specially designed hydroxyapatite coating was used in 14 patients (16 feet). PURPOSE: To report a case of extrusion of a new soft punctum plug with thermoexpansion property (Medennium SmartPLUG).
METHODS: A soft punctum plug was implanted in a 32-year-old woman with a severe dry eye syndrome in juvenile arthritis.
RESULTS: One week after implant the plug partially extruded outside the punctum. Despite this adverse event, all subjective dry eye symptoms improved.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and histology of 2-octyl cyanoacrylate in conjunctival wound closure in rabbits.
METHODS: Ten eyes of 10 New Zealand white rabbits were used. Eight rabbits had conjunctival wounds that were repaired with 2-octyl cyanoacrylate. Two rabbits were killed at 1 week and two rabbits were killed at 2 weeks and their conjunctivae were examined histologically. From two additional rabbits, conjunctival strips were obtained that underwent tensile strength testing.
