Histological properties of the distal sesamoidean impar ligament in racing Thoroughbreds and Quarter horses.

The distal sesamoidean impar ligament (DSIL) is a key component of the equine podotrochlear apparatus, yet its role in conditions such as caudal heel pain and navicular syndrome remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to characterize the histological properties of the DSIL and evaluate how it is influenced by breed and age. Eighty-four cadaveric forelimb DSIL samples were collected from young, athletic Quarter horses (QHs), Thoroughbreds (TBs), and older, retired Quarter horses. Samples were stained and assessed for vessel size and count, number of nerve fascicles, and the r

Detection of differentially expressed genes in bantam chickens providing insights into chicken dwarfism.

BACKGROUND: The genetic basis of dwarfism in chickens, particularly in bantam chickens, is of significant interest as it provides insights into the mechanisms that underlie body size variation and growth. To better understand how gene expression changes contribute to the reduced growth in bantam chickens, we generated RNA-seq data derived from chicken embryos of varying sizes. These embryos were sampled at two developmental stages: early (E5) and later (E13). Differentially expressed genes at each stage were identified for different chicken breeds by comparing the bantam chickens against their

A genome-wide association study reveals candidate genes and regulatory regions associated with birth weight in pigs.

Piglet birth weight is associated with preweaning survival, and its related traits have been included in the breeding program. Thus, understanding its genetic basis is essential. This study identified four birth weight-associated genomic regions on chromosomes 2, 4, 5, and 7 through genome-wide association study analysis in 7286 pigs from three different pure breeds using the FarmCPU model. The genetic and phenotypic variance explained by the four candidate regions is 8.42% and 1.85%, respectively. Twenty-eight candidate genes were detected, of which APPL2, TGFBI, MACROH2A1, and SEC22B have be…

Precipitation as a Possible Risk Factor for Development of Lyme Nephritis in Dogs.

To determine whether increased precipitation in the months before diagnosis is predictive of Lyme nephritis in dogs, a symmetrical bidirectional case-crossover study was performed on 87 dogs with presumptive Lyme nephritis. Cases were geographically linked to the nearest precipitation monitoring station, and monthly total precipitation for the 4 mo preceding diagnosis was compared to monthly total precipitation 1 yr before and 1 yr after. Breeds affected included Labrador retrievers (n = 31), mixed-breed dogs (n = 19), and golden retrievers (n = 10), with a possible seasonal bimodal peak in sp

Intracranial squamous cell carcinoma in an Ovis aries.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant mucoepithelial tumor that affects pets and farm animals. Common sites are dorsal areas and/or areas of poor skin pigmentation exposed to mutagenic ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Novel ovine papillomavirus (OaPV3) was recently described in SCC lesions in Sardinia breed ovines. In 2017, a 7‑year‑old half‑breed aries was presented with symptoms compatible with a vestibular syndrome. The animal was euthanized 1 month after the onset of clinical signs due to a lack of response to treatment and poor prognosis. A complete postmortem examination was performed.
