Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Hypersexuality: A Pilot Study.

Hypersexuality refers to the inability to control sexual desire. Despite it has shown serious consequences for physical, psychological and social health, the evidence of available psychological interventions is still insufficient. In this open-label pilot study, an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention was conducted with adults with clinically significant levels of hypersexuality aimed to examine its feasibility and usefulness. The intervention consisted of eight weekly online individual psychological intervention sessions. Outcome self-report measures were administered at basel

Community Empowerment and Mentality as a Treatment in Treatment-Resistant Trichotillomania: A Case Report.

Trichotillomania, a psycho-dermatologic disorder defined by self-inflicted often noticeable hair loss through hair-pulling, is difficult to manage and treat. Its etiology is multifactorial and frequently is complicated by comorbid conditions like anxiety and depression. Evidence-based treatment is limited but options involve a combination of pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), habit reversal training (HRT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Many individuals still struggle with the condition despite therapy efforts. This is the case of a 24-year-old female who has

Using virtual reality simulation to address racism in a healthcare setting.

Racism continues to plague Western societies' institutions, including the healthcare system. Despite the evidence of racism's negative impacts on healthcare providers, administrators, patients, and families, healthcare workers report hesitancy in taking action to address racism in the workplace. Simulation, with its experiential pedagogy and foundation in psychological safety, may be an educational tool to support practical training. Guided by a social cognitive view of regulation of learning, we piloted virtual reality (VR) modules focused on addressing bias, privilege, and microaggressions.

The effects of bilateral posterior parietal cortex tRNS on reading performance.

According to established cognitive neuroscience knowledge based on studies on disabled and typically developing readers, reading is based on a dual-stream model in which a phonological-dorsal stream (left temporo-parietal and inferior frontal areas) processes unfamiliar words and pseudowords, whereas an orthographic-ventral stream (left occipito-temporal and inferior frontal areas) processes known words. However, correlational neuroimaging, causal longitudinal, training, and pharmacological studies have suggested the critical role of visuo-spatial attention in reading development. In a double

Infralimbic YTHDF1 is necessary for the beneficial effects of acute mild exercise on auditory fear extinction retention.

Exposure therapy is the most effective approach of behavioral therapy for anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). But fear is easy to reappear even after successful extinction. So, identifying novel strategies for augmenting exposure therapy is rather important. It was reported that exercise had beneficial effects on cognitive and memory deficits. However, whether exercise could affect fear memory, especially for fear extinction remained elusive. Here, our results showed that exposure to acute mild exercise 1 or 2 h before extinction training can augment recent fear extinction reten

Attenuated maladaptive emotion processing as a potential mediator of the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and mental health.

The emotion processing and regulation mechanisms by which dispositional (personality trait) mindfulness exerts its positive effects on mental health remain unclear. Here, we tested, using structural equation modeling, whether the relationship between higher dispositional mindfulness and better mental health is mediated by reduced maladaptive processing of emotional information (e.g., expressive suppression, impoverished emotional experiences, unprocessed emotions, avoidance, externalizing strategies) and associated lower negative affect, enhanced adaptive processing of emotional information (e

Novel treatments for anorexia nervosa: Insights from neuroplasticity research.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN) remains challenging; there are no approved psychopharmacological interventions and psychotherapeutic strategies have variable efficacy. The investigation of evidence-based treatments has so far been compounded by an underdeveloped understanding into the neurobiological changes associated with the acute stages of AN. There is converging evidence of deficiencies in neuroplasticity in AN. METHOD: This paper provides an overview of neuroimaging, neuropsychological, molecular and qualitative findings relating to neuroplasticity in AN, translating thes

Predicting functional impairment in euthymic patients with mood disorder: A 5-year follow-up.

Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder are psychiatric disorders associated with psychosocial impairment. Despite clinical improvement, functional complaints usually remain, mainly impairing occupational and cognitive performance. The aim of this study was to use machine learning techniques to predict functional impairment in patients with mood disorders. For that, analyzes were performed using a population-based cohort study. Participants diagnosed with a mood disorder at baseline and reassessed were considered (n = 282). Random forest (RF) with previous recursive feature selection an

Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Systems for Cancer Survivors: A Narrative Review of the Literature.

Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in cancer care, as the functioning of cancer survivors is frequently compromised by impairments that can result from the disease itself but also from the long-term sequelae of the treatment. Nevertheless, the current literature shows that only a minority of patients receive physical and/or cognitive rehabilitation. This lack of rehabilitative care is a consequence of many factors, one of which includes the transportation issues linked to disability that limit the patient's access to rehabilitation facilities. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has further shown th

Four-Class Classification of Neuropsychiatric Disorders by Use of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Derived Biomarkers.

Diagnosis of most neuropsychiatric disorders relies on subjective measures, which makes the reliability of final clinical decisions questionable. The aim of this study was to propose a machine learning-based classification approach for objective diagnosis of three disorders of neuropsychiatric or neurological origin with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) derived biomarkers. Thirteen healthy adolescents and sixty-seven patients who were clinically diagnosed with migraine, obsessive compulsive disorder, or schizophrenia performed a Stroop task, while prefrontal cortex hemodynamics we

A Comprehensive Machine Learning Framework for the Exact Prediction of the Age of Onset in Familial and Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease.

Machine learning (ML) algorithms are widely used to develop predictive frameworks. Accurate prediction of Alzheimer's disease (AD) age of onset (ADAOO) is crucial to investigate potential treatments, follow-up, and therapeutic interventions. Although genetic and non-genetic factors affecting ADAOO were elucidated by other research groups and ours, the comprehensive and sequential application of ML to provide an exact estimation of the actual ADAOO, instead of a high-confidence-interval ADAOO that may fall, remains to be explored. Here, we assessed the performance of ML algorithms for predictin

Cognitive bias modification for threat interpretations: using passive Mobile Sensing to detect intervention effects in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder is associated with distinct mobility patterns (e.g., increased time spent at home compared to non-anxious individuals), but we know little about if these patterns change following interventions. The ubiquity of GPS-enabled smartphones offers new opportunities to assess the benefits of mental health interventions beyond self-reported data. OBJECTIVES: This pre-registered study (https://osf.io/em4vn/?view_only=b97da9ef22df41189f1302870fdc9dfe) assesses the impact of a brief, online cognitive training intervention for threat interpretations using passively-col…

Ubrogepant to Treat Acute Migraine in Adults.

Migraine is a neurobiological headache disorder that affects around 16% of adults in the United States. Medical treatment of mild to moderate migraines include non-prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen, or aspirin and caffeine-containing combination analgesics. Additionally, moderate to severe migraines and those that are mild to moderate that have not responded to analgesics can be treated with triptans, which are drugs specific for migraine treatment. Non-pharmacological treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation training. Medications for the p

Intact procedural learning and motor intracortical inhibition in adult neurofibromatosis type 1 gene carriers.

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)1 is known to cause learning deficits in affected individuals. There has been evidence linking altered gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)2 mediated inhibition to learning impairments in rodent models and humans with NF1. Still, evidence on the role of GABA in learning deficits associated with NF1 is inconclusive. METHODS: We examined procedural learning and motor cortex excitability through intracortical facilitation and short interval intracortical inhibition and its activity dependent modulation while performing a procedural sequence learning task in 16

Consensus for Thoracoscopic Left Upper Lobectomy-Essential Components and Targets for Simulation.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based training is a valuable component of cardiothoracic surgical education. Effective curriculum development requires consensus on procedural components and focused attention on specific learning objectives. Through use of a Delphi process, we established consensus on the steps of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) left upper lobectomy and identified targets for simulation. METHODS: Experienced thoracic surgeons were randomly selected for participation. Surgeons voted and commented on the necessity of individual steps comprising VATS left upper lobectomy. Step

Emotional Awareness in Daily Life: Exploring Its Potential Role in Repetitive Thinking and Healthy Coping.

Cross-sectional research has found that emotional awareness, which is composed of one's emotional clarity and attention to emotions, is associated with psychopathology, emotion regulation, and coping. Not surprisingly then, emotional awareness is often a target of cognitive and behavioral therapies. However, little is known about what emotional awareness is related to in daily life, which would inform how and for whom emotional awareness training should be conducted in therapeutic settings. The goal of the current studies was to examine associations among facets of emotional awareness and repe

The feasibility and acceptability of goal management training of executive functions in children with spina bifida and acquired brain injury.

Executive dysfunction causes significant real-life disability for children with spina bifida (SB) and acquired brain injury (ABI), and efficient interventions are needed. Goal Management Training (GMT) is a cognitive rehabilitation intervention for improving executive function (EF) that has received empirical support in studies of adults with SB and ABI. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a newly developed pediatric GMT protocol (pGMT). Thirteen children (7 boys, 10-16 years) with SB (n = 4), traumatic brain injury (n = 8), and encephalitis (n = 1)

tDCS-induced episodic memory enhancement and its association with functional network coupling in older adults.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) augments training-induced cognitive gains, an issue of particular relevance in the aging population. However, negative outcomes have been reported as well, and few studies so far have evaluated the impact of tDCS on episodic memory formation in elderly cohorts. The heterogeneity of previous findings highlights the importance of elucidating neuronal underpinnings of tDCS-induced modulations, and of determining individual predictors of a positive response. In the present study, we aimed to modulate episodic memory formation in 34 older adults with a
