Co-infections with multiple pathogens in natural populations of Ixodes persulcatus ticks in Mongolia.

BACKGROUND: In Mongolia, the taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus is the major vector of tick-borne pathogens. Knowledge about co-infections of these pathogens in ticks is necessary both for understanding their persistence in nature and for diagnosing and treating tick-borne diseases. METHODS: The prevalence of seven tick-borne infections in 346 I. persulcatus collected from the Selenge and Bulgan provinces of Mongolia was evaluated using real-time PCR. Quantification of Borrelia spp. was performed using multiplex quantitative PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Genetic analysis of Borrelia spp. in 11

A case report on mixed pulmonary infection of Nocardia nova, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Aspergillus fumigatus based on metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary infection is one of the common complications of long-term use of glucocorticoids. Severe infections not only increase the length of hospital stay and treatment costs but also cause progression or recurrence of the primary disease. CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein, we reported a case of mixed pulmonary infection secondary to glucocorticoid use. Rare pathogens such as Nocardia nova, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Aspergillus fumigatus, and cytomegalovirus were detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung puncture tissue. Combining

TIDE Analysis of Cryptosporidium Infections by gp60 Typing Reveals Obscured Mixed Infections.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic disease associated with potentially fatal diarrhea. The most used method in Cryptosporidium subtyping is based on the glycoprotein gene gp60. Each infection can represent a parasite population, and it is important to investigate the influence on transmission and virulence, as well as any impact on public health investigations. However, an easy-to-use method for detection is lacking. METHODS: Here we report on the use of the bioinformatic program TIDE for deconvolution of gp60 chromatograms. A combination of single oocyst analysis and cloning succes

The effect of live attenuated influenza vaccine on pneumococcal colonisation densities among children aged 24-59 months in The Gambia: a phase 4, open label, randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Influenza and other respiratory viruses promote Streptococcus pneumoniae proliferation in the upper respiratory tract. We sought to investigate for what we believe is the first time, the effect of intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) on nasopharyngeal S pneumoniae density in a low-income to middle-income country population with high pneumococcal carriage rates. METHODS: In an open-label, randomised, controlled trial in The Gambia, 330 healthy children aged 24-59 months were randomly assigned 2:1 to receive one trivalent LAIV dose at enrolment (day 0, intervention) o

Assessment of anthelmintic effectiveness to control Fasciola hepatica and paramphistome mixed infection in cattle in the humid tropics of Mexico.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the main anthelmintics used for the control of trematodes in cattle in an endemic area in the humid Mexican tropics. A diagnostic study was carried out in nine cattle farms to determine the prevalence of flukes through faecal examination. Only three farms with more than 20 cows positive to trematodes were chosen to determine the effectiveness of commercial anthelmintics (triclabendazole, TCBZ; ivermectin + closantel, (IVM + CLOS); IVM + clorsulon, (CLORS); nitroxynil, NITROX). The prevalence of Fasciola hepatica was 27.1% and 29.

"Double Trouble": Severe Meningoencephalitis Due to Borrelia burgdorferi and Powassan Virus Co-Infection Successfully Treated with Intravenous Immunoglobulin.

BACKGROUND Powassan virus (POWV) is an emerging tick-borne flavivirus transmitted to humans by ticks. While infection is asymptomatic in some people, others develop life-threatening encephalitis with high mortality rates. Co-infection between POWV and Borrelia burgdorferi is rare despite the fact that both pathogens can be transmitted through the same tick vector, Ixodes scapularis. It is unclear if co-infection leads to more severe clinical presentation and worse outcome. CASE REPORT A 76-year-old Wisconsin man was admitted for meningoencephalitis complicated by hypoxemic and hypercapnic resp
