An algorithm for the treatment of noncondylar mandibular fractures.

An algorithm for the treatment of noncondylar mandibular fractures is presented based on outcomes from studies that have been performed during the past 30 years. It is designed to assist clinicians in formulating a treatment plan that can be expected to provide the patient with a predictable outcome.

Comparison of the efficiencies of permanent maxillary tooth removal performed with single buccal infiltration versus routine buccal and palatal injection.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to demonstrate whether articaine/HCl administered alone as a single buccal infiltration in maxillary tooth removal provided favorable palatal anesthesia as compared to buccal and palatal injection, for a surgical procedure. STUDY DESIGN: In total, 71 patients for removal of bilateral permanent maxillary teeth were enrolled in the present study. For the experimental side, 1.7 mL of 4% articaine/HCl was injected into the buccal vestibule of the tooth. After 5 minutes, tooth extraction was performed. On the control side a similar protocol was applied w

Household smoking as a risk indicator for caries in adolescents' permanent teeth.

This study investigated the association between household member's (HHM) smoking or secondhand smoke exposure and caries, using a cross-sectional sample of adolescents who had both dental examination and data on HHM smoking (n = 1,873). The results suggest that HHM smoking may be a risk indicator for caries in adolescents' permanent teeth.

Clinical Evaluation of Three Direct Pulp Capping Materials in Caries-Induced Pulpitis of Mature Permanent Teeth: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Direct pulp capping (DPC) preserves pulp vitality in caries-exposed permanent teeth, but clinical evidence comparing different capping materials and identifying prognostic factors remains limited. This study evaluated the success of DPC with iRoot BP Plus, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and calcium hydroxide (CH), and explored factors associated with treatment outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this single-blind, parallel-group, superiority randomized trial, 120 patients with caries-induced reversible pulpitis were equally assigned to CH, MTA, or iRoot BP Plus. The primary outc

Validation of the Visible Occlusal Plaque Index (VOPI) in estimating caries lesion activity.

OBJECTIVE: The present study appraises the construct validity of the Visible Occlusal Plaque Index (VOPI) along with its sub-types, convergent and discriminant validity. METHODS: 618 10-15year old Brazilian adolescents were included. The VOPI has a four-point ordinal scale ranging from no plaque to heavy plaque. VOPI scores and caries status on permanent molars were mapped and recorded at individual anatomical sites of the groove-fossa-system and at surface level. Outcomes were presence of sound site/surface and site/surface with active or inactive caries lesions (non-cavitated or cavitated).

Decoronation of an ankylosed permanent incisor: alveolar ridge preservation and rehabilitation by an implant supported porcelain crown.

Replacement resorption and ankylosis are frequently diagnosed following severe dental trauma. The complications that may develop as a result of ankylosis of a permanent incisor in children and adolescent include: esthetic compromise, orthodontic complications because of: arch irregularity; lack of mesial drift; tilting of adjacent teeth, arch length loss and local arrest of alveolar ridge growth. To avoid such complications, an ankylosed tooth should be removed before the changes become so pronounced that they compromise future prosthetic treatment. The purpose of this article was to present a

Palatally impacted maxillary canines.

In a special article entitled, "Impacted Maxillary Canines: A Review," Samir E. Bishara states: "The ectopic eruption and impaction of maxillary permanent canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem. The diagnosis and treatment of this problem usually requires the expertise and cooperation of the general practitioner, the paediatric dentist, the oral surgeon, and the periodontist, as well as the orthodontist." We will review the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of impacted maxillary canines. A technique will be outlined that allows a competent orthodontic clinician to singly, efficie

Comparative Long-Term Clinical Performance of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment Versus Conventional Composite Restorations in Carious Primary Molars: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries are highly prevalent in children, and restoring carious primary molars presents challenges due to limited cooperation and resource constraints in this age group. Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) may offer a minimally invasive alternative to conventional restorative techniques; however, long-term comparative evidence in primary dentition remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the success rates and clinical performance of ART using high-viscosity glass ionomer cement with conventional composite restorations in carious primary molars over 24 mo…

CONCLUSION: Masticatory muscle activity in growing subjects with mixed dentition exhibited minimal variation across different skeletal and dental malocclusions. Global Research Trends in Pediatric Space Maintainers: A Bibliometric Analysis of Web of Science Literature.

Background Premature loss of primary teeth may lead to arch length reduction, space loss, and malocclusion in children, and space maintainers play an important role in preserving dental arch integrity during the mixed dentition period. Digital workflows, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies have increasingly influenced pediatric space-maintainer design and fabrication. This study aimed to map global research trends in space-maintainer research in pediatric dentistry, identify the principal contributing countries, authors…

Prosthesis wear and complications in various materials used for fixed implant-supported prostheses: A systematic review.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Clinical evidence regarding the wear of prosthetic materials and antagonist dentition in fixed implant-supported prostheses (FIPs) remains limited, particularly for polymers such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyoxymethylene (POM), and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate prosthesis wear in FIPs fabricated from different restorative materials, to identify associated patient- and treatment-related factors, and to assess their effect on antagonist teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was c…

In Vitro Evaluation of Manual, Electric, and Sonic Toothbrushing on Composite Restoration Surface Properties and Retention in Primary Teeth.

Background: The longevity of composite restorations in primary teeth depends on the preservation of both mechanical performance and surface integrity under daily oral hygiene procedures. While powered toothbrushes have been widely investigated for plaque control, their potential effects on restorative materials in the primary dentition remain insufficiently characterized. This preliminary in vitro study evaluated the influence of manual, oscillating-rotating electric, and sonic toothbrushing on the surface microhardness, surface roughness, and shear resistance of resin composite restorations i…

Dentition status may inform targeted strategies for identifying individuals at heightened hip fracture risk, guiding interventions such as frailty assessment, nutritional support, fall prevention, and integrated oral health management.

Association between frankfurt horizontal-referenced vertical position of the maxillary first molar and mandibular asymmetry: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Facial symmetry is a key determinant of aesthetic balance and functional harmony. Unilateral vertical discrepancies in the maxillary dentition, particularly side-to-side discrepancy in the FH-referenced vertical position of the maxillary first molar (U6), has been hypothesized to be associated with functional mandibular deviation and skeletal asymmetry. However, the relationship between localized dentoalveolar vertical discrepancy and mandibular morphology remains poorly understood. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients aged 16-35 years with mandibular asymmetry ≥ 2 mm on MSCT, operationall…
