Chronic brain stimulation rewarding experience ameliorates depression-induced cognitive deficits and restores aberrant plasticity in the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a multifactorial disease which often coexists with cognitive deficits. Depression-induced cognitive deficits are known to be associated with aberrant reward processing, neurochemical and structural alterations. Recent studies have shown that chronic electrical stimulation of brain reward areas induces a robust antidepressant effect. However, the effects of repeated electrical self-stimulation of lateral hypothalamus - medial forebrain bundle (LH-MFB) on depression-induced cognitive deficits and associated neurochemical and structural alterations i

Motor evoked potential monitoring during cerebral aneurysm surgery: technical aspects and comparison of transcranial and direct cortical stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates technical aspects, handling, and safety of intraoperatively applied transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) and direct cortical stimulation (DCS) for eliciting muscle motor evoked potentials (mMEPs) during cerebral aneurysm surgery. METHODS: In 119 patients undergoing cerebral aneurysm surgery, mMEPs were evoked by a train of five stimuli with individual pulse duration of 0.5 milliseconds, a repetition rate of 2 Hz, and constant current anodal stimulation. The maximal stimulation intensity was 240 mA for transcranial and 33 mA for direct stimulation. mMEPs we

Hypocretinergic control of spinal cord motoneurons.

Hypocretinergic (orexinergic) neurons in the lateral hypothalamus project to motor columns in the lumbar spinal cord. Consequently, we sought to determine whether the hypocretinergic system modulates the electrical activity of motoneurons. Using in vivo intracellular recording techniques, we examined the response of spinal motoneurons in the cat to electrical stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus. In addition, we examined the membrane potential response to orthodromic stimulation and intracellular current injection before and after both hypothalamic stimulation and the juxtacellular applicat

The spatial organization of central sensitization of hind limb flexor reflexes in the decerebrated, spinalized rabbit.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the location of a noxious stimulus and the magnitude and duration of the plastic effects induced by that stimulus in withdrawal reflexes acting about the knee and the ankle, in rabbits. Reflexes were evoked in the nerves to the anterior tibial and semitendinosus flexor muscles by electrical stimulation at the toes. Repetitive, high intensity electrical stimulation of nerve trunks (sural, medial gastrocnemius, superficial peroneal, tibial, 100 pulses, 20 V, 1 ms at 0.5 Hz) was generally found to be a poor method for inducing centra

Non-auditory stimulation in adult cochlear implant users.

This is a retrospective case review of all 163 adults to have received multichannel cochlear implants on the Manchester University/Manchester Royal Infirmary programme between 1988 and 1998. The aims were to investigate the incidence of unwanted non-auditory effects of electrical stimulation (NAS) of the cochlea, and to try to identify any factors that seemed to be related to these effects. The effectiveness of programming strategies in eliminating unwanted effects was also studied. Most of the devices were Nucleus CI 22M or CI 24M. The remainder were Med-el Combi 40 or Combi 40+. NAS occurred

Effect and mechanism of vagal nerve stimulation on somatostatin secretion in dogs.

To investigate the effect of vagal nerve stimulation on the release of pancreatic somatostatin, we electrically stimulated (10 Hz, 5 ms, 13.5 mA, and 10 min) the thoracic vagi just below the heart in halothane anesthetized dogs (n = 15). The stimulation increased the pancreatic output of somatostatinlike immunoreactivity (SLI) (delta = +248 +/- 81 fmol/min, P less than 0.005; base-line levels = 455 +/- 150 fmol/min). min). Arterial plasma SLI levels increased as well (delta = +16 +/- 3 fmol/ml, P less than 0.001; base-line levels = 65 +/- 3 fmol/ml), reflecting stimulation of extrapancreatic S

Pelvic-floor rehabilitation, Part 1: Comparison of two surface electrode placements during stimulation of the pelvic-floor musculature in women who are continent using bipolar interferential currents.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Electrical stimulation of the pelvic floor is used as an adjunct in the conservative treatment of urinary incontinence. No consensus exists, however, regarding electrode placements for optimal stimulation of the pelvic-floor musculature. The purpose of this study was to compare two different bipolar electrode placements, one suggested by Laycock and Green (L2) the other by Dumoulin (D2), during electrical stimulation with interferential currents of the pelvic-floor musculature in continent women, using a two-group crossover design. SUBJECTS: Ten continent female volunt

A systematic assessment of safety, tolerability and blinding effectiveness of kilohertz transcranial magnetic perturbation (kTMP).

Objective.Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques are increasingly used to modulate brain activity in basic and translational research. Kilohertz transcranial magnetic perturbation (kTMP) is a recently developed NIBS approach that uses magnetic induction to generate subthreshold electric fields in the brain. kTMP has been shown to modulate cortical excitability while producing no perceptible sensation at the stimulation site. However, its safety and tolerability have not yet been systematically evaluated-a gap this study aims to address.Approach.We conducted sham-controlled experiment

Visual evoked magnetic responses to central and peripheral stimulation: simultaneous VEP recordings.

Visual evoked magnetic field (VEF) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in response to pattern reversal left half-field central (0-2 degrees, 0-5 degrees) and to left half-field peripheral stimulation (2-15 degrees, 5-15 degrees) were simultaneously recorded in 10 normal subjects. The aim was to localize the origin of the largest wave around 100 ms. By comparing the magnetic evoked 100m wave and electric evoked P100 wave, we found that the response to the small central field (0-2 degrees) stimulation was clearly evident in the VEP and not in the VEF, while the response to the peripheral field (2

Changes in sodium activity during light stimulation in photoreceptors, glia and extracellular space in drone retina.

Ion-selective micro-electrodes were used to measure Na+ activity, aNa, in the two types of cell, photoreceptors and glial cells, and in the extracellular space, in superfused slices of the retina of the honey-bee drone, Apis mellifera male. Movements of Na+ were induced by light stimulation, or by increasing [K+] in the superfusate. In the dark, aNa in the photoreceptors was 10 mM (S.E. of the mean = 1 mM); in the glial cells it was higher: 37 +/- 2 mM. We estimate that in this preparation about 2/3 of the free Na+ in the tissue is in the glial cells. Stimulation with a train of light flashes,

Computational modeling of dorsal root ganglion stimulation using an Injectrode.

Objective.Minimally invasive neuromodulation therapies like the Injectrode, which is composed of a tightly wound polymer-coated Platinum/Iridium microcoil, offer a low-risk approach for administering electrical stimulation to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). This flexible electrode is aimed to conform to the DRG. The stimulation occurs through a transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) patch, which subsequently transmits the stimulation to the Injectrode via a subcutaneous metal collector. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of stimulation through TES relies on the specif

In vivo inhibitory effects of stimulation at the central end of the pelvic nerve severed from urinary bladder on urinary bladder contraction in rats.

Two- or five-Hz electrical stimulation of the central end of the left pelvic nerve severed from the urinary bladder in rats inhibited bladder contraction induced by intravesical infusion of Tyrode's solution. Inhibition of bladder motility by 2-Hz nerve stimulation appeared after pretreatment with strychnine (0.3 mg/kg, i.v.), naloxone (1 mg/kg, i.v.) and picrotoxin (1 mg/kg, i.v.). Hypogastric nerve stimulation, however, did not affect bladder contraction. These results suggest the presence of an inhibitory mechanism on the pelvic motoneuron activated by contralateral pelvic nerve stimulation

Vestibular, olfactory, and vibratory responses of nucleus basalis prosencephali neurons in pigeons.

Evoked multiple unit responses were recorded through chronically implanted electrodes from the nucleus basalis prosencephali of the pigeon (Columba livia) upon vibratory stimulation of the beak-tip and airborne auditory stimulation, thus confirming earlier anatomical and physiological findings. Electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve led to similar short latency responses. A specific directional sensitivity to rotatory vestibular stimulation was observed. Pitch motions of the head in the downward direction evoked the most pronounced multi-unit responses. These results support the suggest

Pain in sciatica depresses lower limb nociceptive reflexes to sural nerve stimulation.

The inhibitory effects of acute pain produced by the Lasègue's manoeuvre on the lower limb nociceptive flexion reflexes induced by electrical sural nerve stimulation were explored in patients complaining of sciatica as a result of an identified unilateral disc protrusion. Lassègue's manoeuvre on the affected side produced a typical radicular pain and resulted in a powerful depression of nociceptive reflexes elicited either in the normal or in the affected lower limb. Simultaneously, patients reported relief of the electrically-induced pain. In contrast, painless Lasègue's manoeuvre on the norm

Case report: Challenges and implications of conduction system pacing in pediatrics: Case series.

Cardiac electrical stimulation in children usually is needed in the setting of complete congenital atrioventricular block, atrioventricular block after heart surgery, and bradycardia associated with some specific channelopathies. In cases of atrioventricular block, the high percentage of ventricular stimulation raises concern on the deleterious effects of chronic stimulation of the right ventricle. In recent years, physiologic stimulation has developed as a valid approach for adult patients and a great interest has risen in offering conduction system pacing also to the pediatric population. We

Neuromodulation of dyspnea - A literature review.

Dyspnea is a complex sensation resulting from the interplay between neural, biochemical, and mechanical pathways. Because dyspnea is a perception created and interpreted by the central nervous system, it could theoretically be targeted by neuromodulation approaches. This technique is used in pain to modulate the function of neuronal circuits. However, a safe surgical and/or non-invasive modus operandi is not established for refractory dyspnea. Nevertheless, the following literature review will discuss different neuromodulation techniques that may treat refractory dyspnea, even though the under

Non-invasive brain stimulation modalities for the treatment and prevention of opioid use disorder: a systematic review of the literature.

The U.S. is currently facing an unprecedented epidemic of opioid-related deaths. Despite the efficacy of the current treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD), including psychosocial interventions and medication-assisted therapy (MAT), many patients remain treatment-resistant and at high risk for overdose. A potential augmentation strategy includes the use of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and auricular vagus nerve stimulation (aVNS). These approaches may have therapeutic benefits

Neuromodulation in migraine: state of the art and perspectives.

Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling disease. The drugs prescribed for migraine prophylaxis can have intolerable side effects or can be ineffective. Neuromodulation techniques are increasingly used in neurology. Transcutaneous supraorbital nerve stimulation is effective in episodic migraine prevention, whereas vagus nerve stimulation provides interesting results in acute migraine therapy. Transcranial stimulation techniques gave variable, and sometimes contradictory, results. The visual cortex is the target of choice in migraine: studies in migraine prevention and aura acute treatment

An implantable mechano-electro cascade platform synchronizes neuro-muscle repair.

Peripheral nerve injury triggers slow axonal regeneration and irreversible muscle atrophy due to the absence of synchronous neuromuscular repair strategies. We present a fully implantable, self-powered Mechano-driven Electro-adaptable Bioelectronic Implant System (MEBIS) enabling coordinated mechanical-electrical stimulation for integrated neuromuscular regeneration. A programmable robotic actuator delivers quantifiable mechanical massage to denervated muscle, enhancing perfusion while deforming a nanogenerator that converts motion into localized electrical cues.
