The present study describes the results of gestation sac measurement in 237 cases in early pregnant women by the technique of transvaginal sonography. Mean distance between uterine cavity and vaginal scanner probe is the reason for early detection of the gestation ring. Comparing with the transabdominal method the gestation sac can be ascertained one week earlier when performing transvaginal sonography, so that a detection of an intrauterine ring-shaped structure is possible to a time when in case of an unknown pregnancy regular menstrual bleeding is expected. The influence of caffeine and cigarette consumption on fetal growth during pregnancy was studied retrospectively in 913 newborn infants. Analysis of variance was adjusted for length of gestation and sex. A significant caffeine-cigarette interaction was found on birth weight (F = 85.4, p less than 0.01). Among women smoking 15 cigarettes or more per day, birth weight was 206 gm (+/- 57.7 gm) lighter for babies whose mothers consumed 300 mg or more of caffeine per day. The activity of UDP-D-xylose:proteoglycan core protein beta-D-xylosyltransferase (EC 2.4.2.26), the enzyme that catalyzes the initiation of the polysaccharide chain linkage to the core protein of proteoglycans, was measured in costal cartilage from 20 fetal sheep of 65-138 days gestation. Fetal growth, birth weight specific mortality rates and effect of sick leave or hospitalization on the fetal growth were investigated in a material of 476 twin pregnancies managed at University Central Hospital of Turku in years 1970-81. Birth weights of twin babies at any gestational age were slightly but not significantly higher than in earlier materials. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of giant chorioangioma with fetal hydrops, additionally complicated by severe anemia, mild cardiomegaly with hyperdinamic heart circulation and maternal mirror syndrome. We present a parturient who developed an atypical case of amniotic fluid emboli presented by sudden fetal bradycardia, followed by maternal disseminated coagulopathy. The typical feature of cardiopulmonary collapse was absent in this patient implying that in some cases of amniotic fluid emboli (AFE), fetal hypoxia or acidemia is unrelated to maternal cardiopulmonary status.
