Surgical infection in art.

The earliest images of medicine and surgery in Western art are from the late Middle Ages. Although often attractive, at that time they were illustrative and mirrored the text on how to diagnose or treat a specific condition. These drawings in medieval manuscripts represent management of abscesses, perianal infection and fistulas, amputation, and wound dressings. With the Renaissance, art in all its forms flourished, and surgeons were represented at work draining carbuncles, infected bursae, and mastoiditis; managing ulcers, scrofula, and skin infections; and performing amputations. Specific di

New approach to assess quality of life in neonatal surgical cases: medical providers' subjective assessment of disease- and condition-related factors, using the linear analogue scale.

A new questionnaire survey of pediatric surgeons and nurses, using the linear analogue scale, was used to determine subjective assessments of patients' quality of life (QOL) with regard to neonatal surgical diseases and conditions, including those involving anal and urinary functions. The results were analyzed according to the medical providers' years of professional experience. For six neonatal surgical diseases, QOL was assessed more favorably by less experienced surgeons and nurses. The result was similar for adulthood diseases. The development of medical technology can be attributed to thi

Developing a machine learning-based prediction model for postinduction hypotension.

Arterial hypotension is a common and often unintended event during surgery under general anesthesia, associated with increased postoperative complications, such as kidney injury, myocardial injury, and stroke. Postinduction hypotension (PIH) is influenced by patient-specific factors, chronic medication use, and anesthetic induction regimens. Traditional predictive models struggle with this complexity, making machine learning (ML) a promising alternative due to its ability to handle complex datasets and identify hidden patterns. This study aimed to develop and validate an ML-based model for pre

Preventing postoperative pulmonary complications by establishing a machine-learning assisted approach (PEPPERMINT): Study protocol for the creation of a risk prediction model.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pulmonary complications (POPC) are common after general anaesthesia and are a major cause of increased morbidity and mortality in surgical patients. However, prevention and treatment methods for POPC that are considered effective tie up human and technical resources. Therefore, the planned research project aims to create a prediction model that enables the reliable identification of high-risk patients immediately after surgery based on a tailored machine learning algorithm. METHODS: This clinical cohort study will follow the TRIPOD statement for multivariable predict

Prolonged paralysis following mivacurium administration in a pediatric patient with previously undiagnosed pseudocholinesterase deficiency: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pseudocholinesterase, an enzyme produced by the liver and abundantly present in plasma, plays a role in the metabolism of neuromuscular blocking agents such as mivacurium. The administration of mivacurium to patients with pseudocholinesterase deficiency during general anesthesia has been associated with the occurrence of prolonged postoperative paralysis, a rare but potentially severe side effect. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-month-old girl underwent routine, elective minor surgery. The neuromuscular blocking agent mivacurium was used during general anesthesia. Following the procedure,

Health-related quality of life in surgically treated asymptomatic meningioma patients: A population-based matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic patients with meningiomas are increasingly detected, where management can be challenging in terms of surgery versus watchful waiting. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important factor in clinical decision-making, albeit not greatly studied in this patient group. The aim of this paper is to map the HRQoL among patients with surgically removed asymptomatic meningioma as compared to the general population. METHODS: Patients with first-time surgically treated asymptomatic meningioma between 2007 and 2013 were identified. Patients were invited in 2017 to answer

Incidence of emergence delirium after homeostasis-guided pediatric anesthesia for ear-nose-throat surgery.

BACKGROUND: Emergence delirium is a complication of pediatric anesthesia during the early recovery period. Children undergoing ear, nose, and throat surgery are at high risk. The Pediatric Assessment of Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale is used for diagnosis and founded to specify the degree of emergence delirium. However, there is no consensus regarding a threshold value for emergence delirium diagnosis. Homeostasis-guided pediatric general anesthesia aims to maintain physiological parameters within normal ranges. In this prospective, observational study we evaluated the incidence of emergence
