Collateral flow at circle of Willis in healthy condition.

Experimental simulation of cerebrovascular system would be very beneficial tool to evaluate millions of human body cascade sequence. The Circle of Willis (CoW) recently named Cerebral Arterial Circle (CAC) is a main loop structure of cerebral circulatory system which positioned at the cranium base. In this research, we investigate cerebral artery flow pattern in cerebral arteries including afferent, Willisian, and efferent arteries of CAC emphasizing on communicating and connecting arteries which are main routes in CAC and as a risky sites when autoregulation is occurred in terminal parts of m

Plant-Derived Lactobacillus paracasei IJH-SONE68 Improves Chronic Allergy Status: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

We have recently demonstrated that the exopolysaccharides (EPSs) produced by a plant-derived lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus paracasei IJH-SONE68, prevent and ameliorate allergic reaction on contact in dermatitis model mice. In the present study, we conducted a clinical trial using a capsule containing spray-dried powder from pineapple juice broth fermented with the LAB strain as an experimental diet. The clinical trial was conducted as a double-blind and placebo-controlled randomized comparative study from May 2019 to July 2021. Males and females between the ages of 21 and 70 who experie

Automatic Detection of Fiducial Landmarks Toward the Development of an Application for Digitizing the Locations of EEG Electrodes: Occipital Structure Sensor-Based Work.

The reconstruction of electrophysiological sources within the brain is sensitive to the constructed head model, which depends on the positioning accuracy of anatomical landmarks known as fiducials. In this work, we propose an algorithm for the automatic detection of fiducial landmarks of EEG electrodes on the 3D human head model. Our proposal combines a dimensional reduction approach with a perspective projection from 3D to 2D object space; the eye and ear automatic detection in a 2D face image by two cascades of classifiers and geometric transformations to obtain 3D spatial coordinates of the

Recent Developments in Graphene-Based Toxic Gas Sensors: A Theoretical Overview.

Detecting and monitoring air-polluting gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx) are critical, as these gases are toxic and harm the ecosystem and the human health. Therefore, it is necessary to design high-performance gas sensors for toxic gas detection. In this sense, graphene-based materials are promising for use as toxic gas sensors. In addition to experimental investigations, first-principle methods have enabled graphene-based sensor design to progress by leaps and bounds. This review presents a detailed analysis of graphene-based toxic gas sensors

A Comparison of the Capacity of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Cartilage Regeneration Depending on Collagen-Based Injectable Biomimetic Scaffold Type.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have shown a high potential for cartilage repair. Collagen-based scaffolds are used to deliver and retain cells at the site of cartilage damage. The aim of the work was a comparative analysis of the capacity of the MSCs from human adipose tissue to differentiate into chondrocytes in vitro and to stimulate the regeneration of articular cartilage in an experimental model of rabbit knee osteoarthrosis when cultured on microheterogenic collagen-based hydrogel (MCH) and the microparticles of decellularized porcine articular cartilage (DPC). The morphology of samples

SARS-CoV-2: Recent Reports on Antiviral Therapies Based on Lopinavir/Ritonavir, Darunavir/Umifenovir, Hydroxychloroquine, Remdesivir, Favipiravir and other Drugs for the Treatment of the New Coronavirus.

Here we report on the most recent updates on experimental drugs successfully employed in the treatment of the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, also referred to as COVID-19 (COronaVIrus Disease-19). In particular, several cases of recovered patients have been reported after being treated with lopinavir/ritonavir [which is widely used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection] in combination with the anti-flu drug oseltamivir. In addition, remdesivir, which has been previously administered to Ebola virus patients, has also proven effective in the U.S. against coronavirus, wh

A Non-linear Viscoelastic Model of the Incudostapedial Joint.

The ossicular joints of the middle ear can significantly affect middle-ear function, particularly under conditions such as high-intensity sound pressures or high quasi-static pressures. Experimental investigations of the mechanical behaviour of the human incudostapedial joint have shown strong non-linearity and asymmetry in tension and compression tests, but some previous finite-element models of the joint have had difficulty replicating such behaviour. In this paper, we present a finite-element model of the joint that can match the asymmetry and non-linearity well without using different mode

Antagonistic pleiotropy in mice carrying a CAG repeat expansion in the range causing Huntington's disease.

Antagonist pleiotropy, where a gene exerts a beneficial effect at early stages and a deleterious effect later on in an animal's life, may explain the evolutionary persistence of devastating genetic diseases such as Huntington's disease (HD). To date, however, there is little direct experimental evidence to support this theory. Here, we studied a transgenic mouse carrying the HD mutation with a repeat of 50 CAGs (R6/2_50) that is within the pathological range of repeats causing adult-onset disease in humans. R6/2_50 mice develop characteristic HD brain aggregate pathology, with aggregates appea

[Adjuvants of influenza vaccines: new possibilities of using sulphated polysaccharides from marine brown algae.].

The review article presents the characteristics of the main adjuvant groups (mineral salts of aluminum, synthetic squalenebased adjuvants - MF59 and AS03, CpG-oligodeoxynucleotides, virosomes, polyoxidonium, sovidone) included in the licensed influenza vaccine. The main mechanisms of adjuvant action, advantages and disadvantages of these adjuvants are shown. The vaccines adjuvants in the phase of experimental studies and clinical trials (ISCOMs, Advax™, chitosan) are described too. Particular attention is paid to sulfated polysaccharides (fucoidans) from marine brown algae as vaccine adjuvants

Modelling a soft composite accumulator for human mobility assist devices.

Research in the field of human mobility assist devices, aiming to reduce the metabolic cost of daily activities, is seeing the benefits of the exclusive use of accumulators to store and release energy during the gait cycle. The Pneumatic Artificial Muscle, used in a passive state, has proven to be a superior choice for these devices when compared to its alternatives, however, challenges regarding muscle pressure dissipation and a limited elongation potential have been identified. A recently developed, novel Soft Composite material has been shown to experimentally replicate the distinctive mech

Human adipose derived stem cells regress fibrosis in a chronic renal fibrotic model induced by adenine.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: ADSCs transplantation had been shown in some experimental models of kidney damage that it improves kidney function and reduces fibrosis. In this study we evaluated the effect of human adipose tissue-derived stem cell (hADSC) therapy in a chronic kidney damage experimental model. METHODS: A chronic kidney injury was induced by daily orogastric administration of adenine (100mg/kg) to male Wistar rats for 28 days. hADSCs were isolated, expanded and characterized before transplantation. hADSC administration was performed in a tail vein at a dose of 2 x106 cells/animal. Animal

Inactivation of Paragonimus westermani metacercariae in soy sauce-marinated and frozen freshwater crabs.

Soy sauce-marinated freshwater crabs (Eriocheir japonicus) are a source of human paragonimiasis. The viability of Paragonimus westermani metacercariae (PwMc) in marinated crabs was investigated in an experimental setting. The PwMc collected from freshwater crayfish were inoculated into freshwater crabs, which were then frozen or marinated in soy sauce. All PwMc in the freshwater crabs were inactivated after freezing for 48 h at -20 °C and after freezing for 12 h at -40 °C. After marinating for 32 days, the survival rate of PwMc in 5% NaCl soy sauce was 50%, in 7.5% NaCl soy sauce it was 33.3%,

[The application of the method of radiofrequency myringotomy under the experimental conditions and in the clinical practice].

Exudative otitis media is a widespread pathological condition in the human population. In the recent years, the treatment with the electric current having the frequency up to 3.8 MHz has found the increasingly frequent application, in addition to shunting and laser myringotomy, for the perforation of the tympanic membrane to facilitate removal of exudate. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of the electric current with the frequency up to 4 MHz for myringotomy in the patients presenting with exudative otitis media under the experimental condi

Leptospira Infection Interferes with the Prothrombinase Complex Assembly during Experimental Leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic and neglected infectious disease of human and veterinary concern, caused by pathogenic Leptospira species. Although bleeding is a common symptom of severe leptospirosis, the cause of hemorrhage is not completely understood. In severe infections, modulation of hemostasis by pathogens is an important virulence mechanism, and hemostatic impairments such as coagulation/fibrinolysis dysfunction are frequently observed. Here, we analyze the coagulation status of experimentally infected hamsters in an attempt to determine coagulation interferences and the origin

Taenia crassiceps injection into the subarachnoid space of rats simulates radiological and morphological features of racemose neurocysticercosis.

PURPOSE: Neurocysticercosis is a major public health concern. Although its eradication appears feasible, the disease remains endemic in developing countries and has emerged again in Europe and in the USA. Basic studies on neurocysticercosis are needed to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms and, consequently, to improve treatment perspectives. Much has been published on experimental parenchymal neurocysticercosis, but there are no experimental models of racemose neurocysticercosis. METHODS: Cysts of Taenia crassiceps were injected into the subarachnoid space of 11 rats. After 4 m

Hyperlipidemia-associated gene variations and expression patterns revealed by whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing of rabbit models.

The rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is an important experimental animal for studying human diseases, such as hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. Despite this, genetic information and RNA expression profiling of laboratory rabbits are lacking. Here, we characterized the whole-genome variants of three breeds of the most popular experimental rabbits, New Zealand White (NZW), Japanese White (JW) and Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits. Although the genetic diversity of WHHL rabbits was relatively low, they accumulated a large proportion of high-frequency deleterious mutations due

Rhinovirus and childhood asthma: an update.

Asthma is recognized as a complex disease resulting from interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors. Accumulating evidence suggests that respiratory viral infections in early life constitute a major environmental risk factor for the development of childhood asthma. Respiratory viral infections have also been recognized as the most common cause of asthma exacerbation. The advent of molecular diagnostics to detect respiratory viruses has provided new insights into the role of human rhinovirus (HRV) infections in the pathogenesis of asthma. However, it is still unclear whethe

Modeling the Effect of Monomer Conformational Change on the Early Stage of Protein Self-Assembly into Fibrils.

Filamentous self-assembly of proteins is an important process implicated in a plethora of human diseases and of interest for nanotechnology. Using rate equations, we analyze the early stage of the process in solutions that initially contain fibrillation-passive protein monomers and in which the nascent fibrils are practically insoluble. The analysis is based on a model accounting for the conformational and/or other changes the passive monomers experience to transform themselves into fibrillation-active monomers and thus become fibril nuclei. The model allows exact, comprehensive, and simple ma
