Unremitting health-care-utilization outcomes of tertiary rehabilitation of patients with chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Unremitting health-care-seeking behaviors have only infrequently been addressed in the literature as an outcome of treatment for chronic disabling work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The limited research has never focused on the patient as the "driver" of health-care utilization, to our knowledge. As a result, little attention has been paid to the differences between treated patients who seek additional health care from a new provider and those who do not. The purpose of this project was to examine the demographic and socioeconomic outcome variables that characterize patients w

‛Until you're in the chair and executing your role, you don't know': A qualitative study of the needs and perspectives of people with stroke-related communication disabilities when returning to vocational activity.

BACKGROUND: People with communication disability after stroke experience low rates of return to vocational roles. Vocational rehabilitation is recommended; however, there are no clear guidelines informing vocational rehabilitation for people with communication disability. Understanding the needs and experiences of this population is critical to improving vocational stroke rehabilitation outcomes. AIMS: This study aimed to: (1) investigate the experience of vocational rehabilitation for people with communication disability after stroke, (2) identify gaps and, (3) provide preliminary recommenda

Pelvic pain comorbidities associated with quality of life after endometriosis surgery.

BACKGROUND: After endometriosis surgery, pain can persist or recur in a subset of patients. A possible reason for persistent pain after surgery is central nervous system sensitization and associated pelvic pain comorbidities. Surgery addresses the peripheral component of endometriosis pain pathophysiology (by lesion removal) but may not treat this centralized pain. Therefore, endometriosis patients with pelvic pain comorbidities related to central sensitization may experience worse pain-related outcomes after surgery, such as lower pain-related quality of life. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to

Nanoparticle-Based Therapeutic Strategies in Respiratory Diseases: Current Approaches and Future Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain major global health challenges, causing significant morbidity and mortality worldwide.1,2 Despite the availability of pharmacological treatments such as bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antibiotics, and chemotherapeutics, most conventional drug administration routes (oral or intravenous) are often associated with critical limitations. These systemic delivery methods lead to the widespread distribution of drugs through

Ovarian cancer prevention through opportunistic salpingectomy during abdominal surgeries: A cost-effectiveness modeling study.

BACKGROUND: There is indication that the fallopian tubes might be involved in ovarian cancer pathogenesis and their removal reduces cancer risk. Hence, bilateral salpingectomy during hysterectomy or sterilization, so called opportunistic salpingectomy (OS), is gaining wide acceptance as a preventive strategy. Recently, it was discussed whether implementation of OS at other gynecologic surgery, e.g., cesarean section, endometriosis excision or myomectomy and even at non-gynecologic abdominal surgery such as cholecystectomy or appendectomy for women with completed family could be feasible. This

[Rett syndrome: report of a new pathogenic variant and review of the literature regarding two clinical cases.].

Prolonged Weaning: S2k Guideline Published by the German Respiratory Society.

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is an essential part of modern intensive care medicine. MV is performed in patients with severe respiratory failure caused by respiratory muscle insufficiency and/or lung parenchymal disease; that is, when other treatments such as medication, oxygen administration, secretion management, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), or nasal high-flow therapy have failed. MV is required for maintaining gas exchange and allows more time to curatively treat the underlying cause of respiratory failure. In the majority of ventilated patients, liberation or "weaning" from M

Occupational skin diseases: options for multidisciplinary networking in preventive medicine.

Occupational dermatoses (OD) have topped the list of occupational diseases in Germany for years. Presently, approximately 16,000 new OD cases are officially reported to public statutory employers' liability insurance bodies, each year. The disease burden is high not only for individuals but also for society as a whole. Estimated annual economic costs in Germany due to sick-leave and lack of productivity due to OD are more than 1.5 billion euros. Thus, in recent years, various pilot initiatives aiming to improve prevention of occupational skin diseases (of various degrees of severity) have been

[Associated injuries in severe pelvic trauma].

There has been a marked increase in the incidence of pelvic fractures over the last few years. Associated injuries to the urogenital and vascular system as well as nerve injuries worsen the prognosis. Over a five year period 126 patients with severe pelvic trauma were treated. Out of these 39 (30.9%) sustained additional peripelvic injuries and represent the study sample. Type B injuries according to the AO classification occurred in 16 (41%) patients, type C fractures in 23 (59%) patients. The spleen, liver and kidney were the most frequently injured organs (58.9%), followed by urogenital les

Early detection of neonatal hearing loss by otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response over 10 years of experience.

OBJECTIVES: A number of different screening protocols for detecting neonatal hearing loss currently exist. We present our 10 years of experience with using auditory brainstem response (ABR) complementary to otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in the three phases hearing screening process in our hospital. Furthermore, we want to demonstrate the usefulness of these screening techniques used in combination, that remain valid to identify cases of neonatal hearing loss and meet the well-established program quality criteria for these screening protocols. METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from p

Bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis of research on robot-assisted vascular interventional surgery (2015-2025).

Vascular interventional procedures are minimally invasive but remain highly dependent on operator expertise and are associated with occupational radiation exposure and technically demanding catheter and guidewire manipulation. By integrating precision motion control, force sensing, haptic feedback, image-guided navigation, and teleoperation, robot-assisted vascular interventional surgery (RVIS) has emerged as an interdisciplinary field spanning robotics, biomedical engineering, and interventional medicine. However, its global research landscape, intellectual base, research hotspots, and themat

Does interdisciplinary group care for the treatment of endometriosis improve pain interference: protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial at an urban academic medical centre.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis affects 10-15% of people assigned female at birth and can cause chronic pelvic pain and impair many domains of quality of life, such as fertility, mood and bladder, bowel and sexual function. Current treatments often fail, leading to recurrent pain and the need for reintervention. As endometriosis negatively affects many domains of life, a variety of non-pharmacological treatments modestly improve symptoms. To bundle these interventions into accessible packaging, our interdisciplinary team developed a novel endometriosis intervention titled 'Peer-Empowered Endometri

Associations between psychological and trauma-related factors and urinary incontinence severity and treatment response among women veterans.

BACKGROUND: Psychological and trauma-related factors (ie, stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and military sexual trauma) may induce physiological responses that contribute to urinary incontinence. Women veterans are disproportionately affected by psychological and trauma-related factors, which may influence urinary incontinence severity and response to behavioral urinary incontinence treatment. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine associations between psychological and trauma-related factors and both urinary incontinence severity and response to behavioral urinary incontinence treatme

Smartphone App-Delivered Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Concussion in Adolescents (MBI-4-mTBI): Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Persisting symptoms affect about one-third of youth following concussion. Mental health history, distress, and coping style are key predictors of prolonged recovery. Early and scalable psychological interventions, such as mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) delivered via smartphones, may improve patients' ability to regulate their emotions and neurophysiologically recover, reducing overall symptom burden. However, no digital therapeutic (DTx) trials in adolescents experiencing concussion exist. OBJECTIVE: This study primarily aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a larger

Relevance of surgery in patients with non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

INTRODUCTION: Upper GI bleeding remains one of the most common emergencies with a substantial overall mortality rate of up to 30%. In severe ill patients, death does not occur due to failure of hemostasis, either medical or surgical, but mainly from comorbidities, treatment complications, and decreased tolerated blood loss. Management strategies have changed dramatically over the last two decades and include primarily endoscopic intervention in combination with acid-suppressive therapy and decrease in surgical intervention. Herein, we present one of the largest patient-based analysis assessing

[Neuroscience in the Courtroom: From responsibility to dangerousness, ethical issues raised by the new French law].

AIM: In the past few years, spectacular progress in neuroscience has led to the emergence of a new interdisciplinary field, the so-called "neurolaw" whose goal is to explore the effects of neuroscientific discoveries on legal proceedings and legal rules and standards. In the United States, a number of neuroscientific researches are designed specifically to explore legally relevant topics and a case-law has already been developed. In Europe, neuroscientific evidence is increasingly being used in criminal courtrooms, as part of psychiatric testimony, nourishing the debate about the legal implica
