Narratives About COVID Challenges in Mexican American Couples as Predictors of Relationship Satisfaction.

The objective of this study was to describe the narrative themes that emerged in Mexican American couples' stories about their relationship challenges at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic-during lockdown-and to examine how those themes related to their relationship satisfaction. We surveyed 58 male-female married couples (n = 116 participants; 73.33% Mexican American) recruited from the Southwest United States and enrolled in a longitudinal study of relationship functioning. Spouses wrote stories about the greatest COVID-19-related challenges they were facing as a couple. To explore assoc

Interpersonal problems as predictors of anxiety symptom trajectories in PTSD: A retrospective multilevel modeling study.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective quality-control study examined whether patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at a specialized Norwegian inpatient hospital exhibited high levels of interpersonal problems before treatment and whether these problems predicted anxiety symptom trajectories during treatment. METHODS: The study analyzed routinely collected data from 58 inpatients with chronic PTSD (M = 44.2 years, SD = 11.0; 51.7% female) who received either Prolonged Exposure (PE) or Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) between 2016 and 2021. Multilevel modeling (MLM) was used to assess weekly s

'The players are the focus, it's never spoken about as coaches': Perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches.

Elite-level coaches operate within highly demanding, pressurised and unstable high-performance environments that can increase their risk of mental ill-health. This qualitative study investigated perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches using an ecological systems approach. Fourteen coaches (men = 12, women = 2) from a range of individual and team sports participated in a single semi-structured interview. Five overarching themes perceived to influence the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches were developed through reflexive thematic analysis,

Work-family conflict and professional identity among Chinese young faculty: examining the action paths and moderating mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between work-family conflict and professional identity among young faculty in Chinese higher education institutions. It also tested the indirect role of mindful teaching and the moderating role of work-family support. The study further explored the different gender patterns of indirect and moderating effects. METHODS: Data were collected from 505 young university faculty using the Work-Family Conflict Scale, Mindfulness in Teaching Scale, Teacher Professional Identity Scale, and Work-Family Support Scale. Statistical analyses included descripti

The emotional and motivational aftermath of everyday rejection.

Although rejection is a universal human experience, the short- and long-term social and emotional consequences of naturally occurring rejection are understudied. Using two experience-sampling designs, we delineated the concurrent and prospective sequelae of rejection. Study 1 used daily diary data collected in 2020 to examine how rejection experiences predicted daily emotional well-being and social motivation in 269 participants (age range = 18-73) screened for social anxiety and/or depression symptoms. Study 2 used denser, within-day sampling via ecological momentary assessment data collected

Investigation of phubbing behavior in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and cognitive disengagement syndrome: a case-control study in adolescent.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity beyond developmental expectations. Problematic technology engagement, including increased smartphone use, is frequently observed among adolescents with ADHD. Phubbing, a term combining 'phone' and 'snubbing,' refers to ignoring others in a social setting by focusing on one's smartphone rather than engaging in face-to-face interaction and has been linked to impaired interpersonal communication. Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome

Beyond Stereotypes: Understanding Romantic Relationships and Dating Perspectives of Chinese Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

This study explored the romantic relationship perspectives and experiences of Chinese youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through semi-structured interviews with 18 participants. Analysis revealed three themes: conceptualizations of love and relationships; barriers and facilitators to relationship pursuit; and support systems for romantic aspirations. Findings suggest that participants possess complex understandings of romantic relationships, face multi-layered barriers including family attitudes and limited social opportunities, and benefit from both formal and inform

The role of adult romantic attachment in long-term childhood cancer survivors' social relationships and help-seeking.

Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at risk for health-related and social challenges that can extend far into adulthood. However, CCS' trajectories are heterogeneous. As a potential influencing factor, the present work investigated adult romantic attachment in conjunction with their relationship perceptions and experiences and help-seeking behavior. CCS (N = 633, aged 24-49 years) were recruited in cooperation with the nationwide German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR). Participants underwent a comprehensive medical examination at the study centre. Validated self-report questionnaires (includ

Daily and Prospective Associations Between Responses to Sexual Rejection and Sexual Well-Being and Relationship Satisfaction in Couples Coping with Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder.

Prior cross-sectional research established that four distinct responses to sexual rejection are associated with sexual and relationship well-being among couples affected by Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (SIAD). Examining these associations daily and prospectively will provide insight into within-person variations, temporality, and directionality. Women and gender-diverse individuals diagnosed with SIAD and their partners (N = 232 couples) completed a baseline survey, 56-day diary, and 6-month follow-up survey, assessing responses to sexual rejection, sexual satisfaction, dyadic sexual desir

A Neural Signature of Touch Aversion and Interpersonal Problems in Borderline Personality Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) suffer from severe social impairments and interpersonal problems. Social touch can provide comfort and facilitate the maintenance of social bonds, and preliminary evidence indicates a negative evaluation of social touch in patients with BPD. However, the neural mechanisms underlying aberrant touch processing in BPD and its role for social impairments are still unclear. METHODS: We recruited 55 BPD patients and 31 healthy controls and used functional magnetic resonance imaging to probe neural responses to slow (i.e., C-tactile [

The mediating roles of interpersonal sensitivity and rumination in the relationship between self-esteem and depression: a longitudinal study on Chinese psychiatric patients.

This study examined the relationship between self-esteem, interpersonal sensitivity, rumination, and depression in psychiatric patients. Participants included 159 adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (Age: M = 31.69, SD = 11.54; 70.4% Female). The study measured depression, self-esteem and interpersonal sensitivity at T1 and rumination and depression at T2 after 10 to 14 days. The study found that after controlling for depression at T1, age, gender, and measurement time interval, low self-esteem at T1 could impact depression at T2 through the mediat

Cognitive behavioural therapy plus Kiesler Circle Training (CBT+) versus CBT only for patients with interpersonal problems: study protocol for a randomised controlled feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: Interpersonal problems are a transdiagnostic risk factor for the development and maintenance of various psychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. Interventions that address these interpersonal challenges could therefore play a crucial role in enhancing mental health. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of a transdiagnostic group intervention, the Kiesler Circle Training (KCT), in improving interpersonal skills. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In a prospective randomised controlled trial (RCT), 156 outpatients with a primary diagnosis of either depressio

Feeling connected, feeling poor? The dual impact of everyday interactions with neighbors and relative deprivation on subjective well-being.

How do everyday interactions with family, friends and neighbors influence people's subjective well-being? Using five waves of panel data from an ecological momentary assessment with more than 180 randomly sampled participants in Switzerland, this paper examines how and for whom social interactions in the neighborhood influence affective states as well as life satisfaction. Investigating both quantitative and qualitative impacts of everyday relations, this paper finds that more frequent interactions with neighbors during the past week lead to higher levels of positive affect. However, interacti

College Community-Based Physical Activity Support at a Public University During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Retrospective Longitudinal Analysis of Intra- Versus Interpersonal Components for Uptake and Outcome Association.

BACKGROUND: College students are vulnerable to setting long-term trajectories of low physical activity (PA) but are reachable via mobile health fitness tracking (eg, mobile health step counting) and interpersonal support tailored to the college community. However, no studies have statistically isolated the appeal and influence of these intra- and interpersonal components in college-based PA interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study retrospectively examined a college-based PA promotion program at a northeast US public university during the COVID-19 pandemic to (1) test the impact of student status

Functional and structural clustering of social relationship layers among college students for link prediction with applications to perceived drinking networks.

Studies on college drinking-a behavior associated with health risks and reduced productivity-often rely on broadly defined peer or friendship networks. Yet, friendship networks can be further divided into more specific relational types, and the associations between such diverse social ties and drinking ties remain poorly understood. This study adopts a multilayer network framework to conduct a fine-grained examination of ten distinct types of social networks (i.e., layers)-including friendship, leadership, emotional support, and perceived drinking-by analyzing their structural similarity acros

Gain Spirals in Couples: Empathy, Attachment Behaviors and the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted daily life and strained couple relationships, requiring adaptation to widespread resource loss. Empathy, particularly cognitive empathy, plays a vital role in social support during stress and may help foster adaptive relationship behaviors. This study was designed to explore whether a self-sustaining gain spiral-a theoretical process wherein resources reinforce one another described in the Conservation of Resources Theory-could be observed between cognitive empathy and attachment behaviors over time. We surveyed 535 cisgender heterosexual couples in April 2020 a

Turning Down, Tuning In: How Mindfulness Shapes Sexual Rejection, Relationship Satisfaction, and Sexual Satisfaction.

Sexual rejection is a challenging interpersonal experience in intimate relationships. The present research examined how mindfulness relates to the use of different sexual rejection strategies across three studies with complementary methodologies: cross-sectional (Study 1), experimental (Study 2) and longitudinal (Study 3). In Study 1 (N = 383; 49.87% women and 48.83% men; Mage = 39.25, SD = 11.97), greater trait mindfulness was associated with fewer hostile and deflecting, and more assertive, rejection strategies. Parallel mediation analyses revealed that fewer hostile and deflecting rejection

Chronic inflammatory skin conditions in young people and their impact on intimate relationships: a quantitative and qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory skin conditions significantly impact sex and intimacy, particularly in female patients or those with genital involvement. Studies on the impacts of intimacy have focused on adult populations and specific conditions, or have used single questions on sexual impact. There are limited data on young people, a group that is learning to navigate social and intimate relationships, and known to be vulnerable to mental health challenges. OBJECTIVES: To understand the impact of common chronic inflammatory skin conditions on sexual health, dating and intimacy in young peo
