Micronutrient deficiencies and anemia among adolescents in rural south India: A game changer for public health interventions.

Anemia remains a significant adolescent health concern with multifactorial causes. Hence, 253 adolescents were assessed for anemia using biochemical markers. Anemia was detected in 17.4% (95% CI: 6.3-28.5%) and it is more frequent among girls (20.16%) than boys (14.7%). It correlated with faith (p=0.025) but not with socio-economic status, caste, or parental education. Anemic participants had lower serum iron (p=0.001) and higher TIBC (p=0.025) suggesting iron deficiency. Ferritin was markedly lower in anemic boys compared to anemic girls. Elevated TIBC in 78.26% reinforced the prevalence of i

[CME-Laboratory 63: Diagnostics of Iron Metabolism].

CME-Laboratory 63: Diagnostics of Iron Metabolism Abstract. Iron deficiency is common and affects the course of many chronic diseases. The diagnosis of absolute and manifest iron deficiency anemia can be easily made by measuring hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels. In inflammatory diseases, the diagnosis can be facilitated by additional laboratory parameters such as soluble transferrin receptor. In several chronic diseases like cardiac or renal failure, different and higher thresholds for serum ferritin apply depending on the disease and stage, sometimes with additional consideration of trans

Chronic ulcerative gastroduodenitis as a first gastrointestinal manifestation of Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome in a 10-year-old child.

A 10-year-old Chinese boy who had a history of congenital thrombocytopathy presented with severe iron deficiency anemia secondary to chronic gastric inflammation and duodenal ulcerations. Subtle oculocutaneous albinism led to the finding of diminished dense bodies in the platelets under electron microscopy, hence the diagnosis of Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS). Biopsies from the stomach and duodenum revealed a lymphocytic infiltration in the submucosa, but H pylori infection was absent. The gastroduodenitis responded to the treatment with omeprazole while iron deficiency anemia was corrected

Observational study of pre-operative intravenous iron given to anaemic patients before elective cardiac surgery.

Cardiac surgical patients with anaemia experience increased morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of pre-operative anaemia in this group. We designed and implemented the Cardiff Pathway, a pre-assessment and treatment pathway to identify cardiac surgical patients with anaemia and iron deficiency. Patients identified with anaemia and/or iron deficiency (Hb < 130 g.l-1 and ferritin < 100 μg.l-1 ) were offered intravenous iron infusion 20 mg.kg-1 pre-operatively. Treatment success was defined as Hb ≥ 130g.l-1 on the day of surgery. We analysed data from 447 patients: 3

Risk of Osteoporosis and Anemia in Plant-Based Diets: A Systematic Review of Nutritional Deficiencies and Clinical Implications.

The global shift toward plant-based diets is accelerating, driven by growing awareness of health, environmental, and ethical concerns. While these diets are linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, emerging evidence highlights potential nutritional deficiencies, particularly in calcium, iron, and vitamin B12, that may compromise bone and hematologic health. This systematic review investigates the relationship between strict plant-based dietary practices and the risks of anemia and osteoporosis. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across four databases PubMed, S

GsZIP7, a Zinc/Iron-Regulated Transporter Protein from Wild Soybean, Confers Enhanced Sensitivity to Alkaline Stress.

Zinc/iron-regulated transporter proteins (ZIPs) are involved in the transport of zinc and iron, maintenance of ion homeostasis, and regulation of plant responses to abiotic stresses. Although previous studies have identified members of the ZIP gene family and screened for alkaline-responsive ZIP genes in wild soybean (Glycine soja), the functional implications of these genes under alkaline stress conditions remain to be fully elucidated. The present study aimed to identify the GsZIP7 gene and investigate its regulatory role in Arabidopsis and wild soybean under alkaline stress. The results sho

[Restless legs syndrome].

Restless legs syndrome, also called Willis-Ekbom disease, is a frequent sensorimotor disease, more often encountered in women than men. It is characterized by an urge to move legs, during the evening or the beginning of the night, increased by rest and relieved by movement. Two forms are classically distinguished: primary restless legs syndrome occurring in young adults with family history and secondary forms occurring in older adults with comorbidities such as iron deficiency, chronic renal failure or neurological diseases (affecting central or peripheral nervous system). The clinical impact

Evaluating micronutrient concentrations in liver samples from abortions, stillbirths, and neonatal and postnatal losses in beef calves.

The primary objective of the current study was to describe micronutrient concentrations in livers collected during postmortem examination from 501 beef calves and fetuses in western Canada. The most frequently identified deficiencies based on reported ranges for aborted fetuses were magnesium, copper, and vitamin E. For stillborn, neonatal, and postnatal calves, the most common deficiencies were magnesium, vitamin A, and vitamin E. However, for calves that died after 3 days of age, selenium deficiency was also very likely. Concentrations of all micronutrients examined in the study except zinc

Anemia in celiac disease is multifactorial in etiology.

Anemia in celiac disease (CD) has been attributed to nutritional deficiencies; however, the clinical manifestations of CD have changed with nongastrointestinal presentations predominating. We collected hematologic parameters from a cohort of patients seen at a tertiary care center for CD to assess the characteristics of anemia in this population. Hematological parameters measured <or=3 months of diagnosis and degree of villous atrophy from 405 patients diagnosed >1995 was analyzed. Ferritin levels were compared with population controls (NHANES III). Iron deficiency was common, occurring in 33%

Multiple micronutrients in pregnancy and lactation: an overview.

This overview of multiple micronutrients during pregnancy and lactation emphasizes 2 relatively neglected issues. The first is that maternal micronutrient status in the periconceptional period, and throughout pregnancy and lactation, should be viewed as a continuum; too often these 3 stages are treated and discussed separately from both a scientific and a public health perspective. Iron and vitamin B-12 are included as examples to stress how status at conception affects maternal, fetal, and infant status and health until the child is weaned. The second issue is that while most attention has be

Obesity and Iron Metabolism: Mechanisms, Status Assessment, and Clinical Implications.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity reshapes systemic iron handling, yet the resulting iron phenotype is frequently misclassified at the bedside and in population studies. This review examines how excess adiposity disturbs iron metabolism and complicates iron-status assessment, with balanced attention to biology and measurement problems across adults and children. RECENT FINDINGS: Adipose tissue is an endocrine, inflammatory, and iron-handling organ. In obesity, interleukin-6 drives hepatic hepcidin through JAK/STAT3 signaling, while leptin, adipose hypoxia, and adipose hepcidin expression may contrib

Role of iron in the pathogenesis of cysteamine-induced duodenal ulceration in rats.

Cysteamine induces perforating duodenal ulcers in rats within 24-48 h. This reducing aminothiol generates hydrogen peroxide in the presence of transition metals (e.g., ferric iron), producing oxidative stress, which may contribute to organ-specific tissue damage. Since most intestinal iron absorption takes place in the proximal duodenum, we hypothesized that cysteamine may disrupt regulation of mucosal iron transport, and iron may facilitate cysteamine-induced duodenal ulceration. We show here that cysteamine-induced ulceration was aggravated by pretreatment of rats with Fe(3+) or Fe(2+) compo
