Can large language models serve as consultants for forensic cause of death analysis? A multidimensional evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Large language models (LLMs) have been proposed as decision support tools in medicine, yet their role in forensic cause of death analysis remains unexplored. METHODS: In this study, we used 118 real-world cases spanning diverse categories of death to systematically evaluate the performance of four representative LLMs (GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, Gemini-2.5pro, and DeepSeek-R1) in forensic cause of death analysis. Two senior forensic pathologists independently evaluated each model's decision-making capabilities regarding inference quality and conclusion accuracy. These metrics were assess

A Scoping Review of Interpretable AI Model Approaches in Echocardiography: Frameworks, Model Types, Explanation Strategies, and Evaluation Practices.

Echocardiography is a central modality for cardiac diagnosis; rising clinical demand and advances in machine learning have accelerated AI development for automated analysis. As these systems may influence high-stakes decisions, model interpretability is essential for clinical trust and accountability. In this review, we define interpretable AI model approaches as strategies that improve interpretability through intrinsically interpretable components within transparent models or post hoc explainable AI (XAI) for black-box models. We synthesized 170 echocardiography studies using interpretable A

Microplastics in motion: Genotoxic and redox imbalance impacts of systemic exposure in a murine model.

The increasing dissemination of microplastics (MPs) in the environment and their potential adverse effects on human and animal health have raised significant concerns in the scientific community. In this context, we aimed to investigate the toxicity induced by polyethylene (PE) MPs in the blood of Swiss mice (Mus musculus), focusing on biomarkers of oxidative and nitrosative stress and genotoxicity. Thirty mice were distributed across three experimental groups: two groups intravenously inoculated with polyethylene MPs at target systemic blood concentrations of 7.1 µg/mL and 355 µg/mL, respecti

Local Diagnostic Reference Levels for Intracranial Aneurysm Coil-Only Embolization Using a Low-Dose Technique.

Background/Objectives: Optimizing routine neurointerventional workflow and minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation during coil-only endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms depend on operator experience, reduced frame rates during both fluoroscopy and digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and the use of advanced angiographic systems. The low-dose protocol implemented in this study used the lowest available fluoroscopy frame rate (3.125 frames per second [fps]) and a nominal acquisition rate of 2 fps (actual = 2.45 fps) for DSA, three-dimensional (3D) rotational angiography, two-dime

Integration of protein and metabolomic blood biomarkers enhances classification of radiation exposure in X-irradiated humanized mice.

PURPOSE: The general population is at risk of exposure to ionizing radiation due to nuclear warfare, terrorism, or radiological accidents. Such exposures can lead to acute radiation syndrome (ARS), a set of debilitating and often fatal health effects that start within the first week after irradiation. ARS is largely defined by injuries to the bone marrow and intestinal tract, two organ systems that are highly sensitive to the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation. There is currently no FDA-approved, minimally invasive assay to identify absorbed radiation dose in subjects suspected to have

Contextual Style Coherence Network for X-Ray Prohibited Item Image Synthesis.

Prohibited item detection in X-Ray baggage images plays a crucial role for preventing the social security and stability. Well annotated X-Ray prohibited item training samples show necessity in achieving high detection performance for X-Ray inspection system. While collection of massive samples is extremely laborious and costly, especially for those X-Ray images, which need professional inspection machine. Synthesizing X-Ray images through Threat Image Projection (TIP) is a promising solution to overcome the data insufficient limitation in prohibited item detection. However, TIP based methods r

Local Variance-Guided Adaptive Infrared-Thermal Sensor Fusion Framework for Human Target Detection in Smoke-Filled Firefighting Environments.

Reliable human target detection in smoke-filled environments is essential for firefighting robots and rescue perception systems. However, conventional RGB cameras are severely degraded by dense smoke, while a single infrared or thermal imaging sensor cannot simultaneously provide sufficient structural details and reliable target-related thermal information. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a local variance-guided adaptive infrared-thermal sensor fusion framework for human target detection in smoke-filled environments, aiming to alleviate smoke-induced degradation in multimodal

Coral larval aquaculture: Species-specific survival and microbial dynamics in flow-through systems.

To enable burgeoning reef restoration efforts, the production of coral larvae in captive aquaculture needs to maximize survival and yields. While current coral larval rearing methods are generally successful, the approaches vary, and larval yields can be limited due to gradual declines in larval quality or sudden crashes. Here, we reared Acropora sp. nov. aff. kenti and Acropora spathulata larvae for seven days under different stocking densities (0.3, 1.0, or 2.0 larvae mL-1), water volume turnover rates (0.2 or 0.6 vol. hr-1), and with or without UV sterilization and surface agitation, to eva

Effects of inspiratory waveform, inspiratory time, and pause on compartmental energy partitioning in a heterogeneous two-compartment respiratory model.

In mechanically heterogeneous respiratory systems, the temporal pattern of inspiratory flow may influence how airway-opening work is partitioned between mechanically distinct compartments, independently of global mechanical power (MP). Using a simplified time-resolved two-compartment model with common airway-opening pressure, we investigated whether inspiratory waveform, inspiratory time, and end-inspiratory pause affect model-derived compartmental airway-level energy routing, including cases matched for global MP. Mechanical heterogeneity was introduced by varying compliance and resistance ra

Policy and practice recommendations for residential addiction treatment: a qualitative investigation on increasing equity in treatment for Black patients.

BACKGROUND: Addiction treatment in the US is less effective for Black patients compared to their White peers. Barriers to appealing, effective, and equitable treatment exist both outside and within and treatment settings. Residential treatment is an important part of the continuum of care and is associated with improvement across substance use and life domains. However, this setting can be particularly uncomfortable for Black patients because it requires them to live in an environment that may not adequately support them. METHODS: Building on a multi-year community-engaged project to improve

Artificial intelligence applications in CBCT-based assessment of craniofacial airway volume and shape in sleep-disordered breathing: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is strongly influenced by craniofacial airway morphology. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables three-dimensional airway assessment; however, manual segmentation is time-consuming and subject to variability. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a potential tool to automate airway analysis. This systematic review evaluates the technical performance and clinical applicability of AI in CBCT-based craniofacial airway assessment for SDB. METHODS: This review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA

Numerical backup protection scheme based on alienation indices of voltage and current measurements practically applied to synchronous generators.

Differential current relays are the primary protection for detecting fault disturbances within the protection zone of three-phase synchronous generator stator windings. This paper presents a numerical backup protection scheme, based on the alienation algorithm, which serves as a redundant protection when the main differential current relay fails to isolate stator winding faults. The proposed method quantifies a set of alienation indices derived from fifteen Pearson correlation coefficients, calculated for the three-phase voltages and currents measured at the load terminals of the generator sta

Predicting local COVID-19 emergences: A time-series classification approach and value of data from social media, search engines, and neighbouring regions.

BACKGROUND: Early warning for known infectious disease threats use methods that focus on detection of outbreaks, often at large geographical scales. However, earlier warning, specifically at the onset of disease emergence (i.e., first case(s)) and at finer spatial scales could significantly improve timeliness and targeting of prevention and control efforts. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that a early classification time-series approach can predict COVID-19 emergence at a local jurisdictional level with a 10-day lead time. METHODS: To predict emergence with a 10-day lead time in Canadia
