Solar photo-Fenton optimization at neutral pH for microcontaminant removal at pilot plant scale.

The increasing occurrence of micropollutants in natural water bodies has medium to long-term effects on both aquatic life and human health. The aim of this study is to optimize the degradation of two pharmaceutical pollutants of emerging concern: amoxicillin and acetaminophen in aqueous solution at laboratory and pilot scale, by solar photo-Fenton process carried out at neutral pH using ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS) as a complexing agent to maintain iron in solution. The initial concentration of each compound was set at 1 mg/L dissolved in a simulated effluent from a municipal wa

Electrophysiological and neuropsychological assessment of cognition in spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 patients: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Event-related potentials (ERPs) reflect cognitive processing: negative early components (N100, N200) are involved in the sensory and perceptual processing of a stimulus, whereas late positive component P300 requires conscious attention. Both neuropsychological and affective disorders are present in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), but the underlying mechanisms need further clarification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this pilot study, we assessed cognitive processing by recording auditory ERPs in 16 consecutive SCA1 patients and 16 healthy controls (HC) matched for

A pilot randomized control trial of topical capsaicin as adjunctive therapy for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, affecting 50% to 80% of pregnant persons. Moreover, despite its prevalence, it remains a challenging condition to treat. Treatment often involves oral and intravenous medications with potential side effects, particularly when taken in combination. Capsaicin cream is proven to decrease nausea and vomiting in cyclic vomiting syndrome; however, its use has not been well studied among pregnant patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the feasibility of the off-label use of capsaicin for the treatment of nau

Core Warming of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients Undergoing Mechanical Ventilation: A Pilot Study.

Fever is a recognized protective factor in patients with sepsis, and growing data suggest beneficial effects on outcomes in sepsis with elevated temperature, with a recent pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) showing lower mortality by warming afebrile sepsis patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). The objective of this prospective single-site RCT was to determine if core warming improves respiratory physiology of mechanically ventilated patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), allowing earlier weaning from ventilation, and greater overall survival. A total of 19 patients with

Efficacy of Combined Initial Treatment of Methotrexate with Infliximab in Pediatric Crohn's Disease: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The combination of antitumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) agents with immunomodulators (IMMs) is a common treatment for pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). Although methotrexate (MTX) can be a first-line medication as an IMM, most clinicians in real-life practice, especially in South Korea, are more familiar with thiopurines. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and immunogenicity of MTX and azathioprine (AZA) as concurrent therapies for pediatric CD. METHODS: In this pilot study, 29 newly diagnosed pediatric patients with moderate-to-severe CD were randomized to receive either M

Female Caregivers' Perception of their Child's Sexualized Behaviors: A Pilot Study at a Child Protection Clinic.

This pilot study explored female caregiver's perception of their child's behaviors during sexual abuse evaluations. We compared reports by caregivers with histories of their own child sexual abuse (PCSA) to caregivers with no prior history of child sexual abuse (NPCSA) regarding their 1) child's sexualized behaviors and (2) perceptions of whether their child had been sexually abused. Forty-four caregivers met inclusion criteria. Ninety-five percent of PCSA caregivers versus 21% of NPCSA caregivers reported at least one behavior from the Child Sexual Behavior Inventory. Our findings identified

Prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD in individuals with opioid use disorder: A randomized pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Nearly all individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) report lifetime trauma exposure and one-third meet diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although prolonged exposure (PE) therapy is a first-line treatment for PTSD, little is known about the effects of PE in individuals with co-occurring OUD. Furthermore, its efficacy is commonly undermined by poor therapy attendance. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and initial efficacy of a novel PE protocol for improving PE attendance and PTSD symptoms among buprenorphine- or methadone-maintained adults with

Thermographic Image of the Hoof Print in Leisure and Cross-Country Warmblood Horses: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The field of veterinary medicine lacks information on equine thermal hoof printing, and few data on the same subject are available in dogs. In human medicine, thermography is used to detect heat emitted by the foot when it comes in contact with a flat surface to detect the abnormalities of the foot balance. The hypothesis states that the thermal pattern of the hoof print in Warmblood horses is detectable and it does not vary among the four limbs in leisure and cross-country Warmblood horses in terms of mean temperature of the hoof print surface. A pilot study was conducted to inves

Prevalence of Workplace Violence and Effects of De-escalation Training Among Hospitalists: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence (WPV) is increasing in healthcare and negatively impacts healthcare worker outcomes. De-escalation training for healthcare workers is recommended to reduce WPV from patients and visitors. Hospitalists may be at high risk for WPV, but the magnitude of WPV and the impact of de-escalation training among hospitalists is not known. METHODS: We investigated the baseline prevalence of WPV experienced by 37 hospitalists at a single center. After an in-person de-escalation training, we measured hospitalists' self-reported "Confidence in Coping with Patient Aggression"

Evaluation of a biodegradable polyurethane patch for repair of diaphragmatic hernia in a rat model: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) repair is an area of active research. Large defects requiring patches have a hernia recurrence rate of up to 50%. We designed a biodegradable polyurethane (PU)-based elastic patch that matches the mechanical properties of native diaphragm muscle. We compared the PU patch to a non-biodegradable Gore-Tex™ (polytetrafluoroethylene) patch. METHODS: The biodegradable polyurethane was synthesized from polycaprolactone, hexadiisocyanate and putrescine, and then processed into fibrous PU patches by electrospinning. Rats underwent 4 mm diaphragmatic

Influence of menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on MS symptom fluctuations: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, females with MS often report menstrually-related symptom fluctuations. Hypothetically, use of oral contraceptives (OCs) could reduce these fluctuations, particularly continuous OCs (11+ weeks of consistent exogenous hormones followed by 1 week placebo). OBJECTIVES: To prospectively capture (1) whether neurologic and generalized symptoms vary with menstrual cycle phase and (2) whether type of contraception impacts symptom fluctuations. METHODS: In this two-center pilot study, females with MS and a regular menstrual cycle prospectively tracked their menstrual

Cardiopulmonary Ultrasound Patterns of Transient Acute Respiratory Distress of the Newborn: A Retrospective Pilot Study.

Acute transient respiratory distress in the first hours of life is usually defined as transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). TTN is a respiratory self-limiting disorder consequent to delayed lung fluid clearance at birth. While TTN is the most common etiology of respiratory distress near term, its pathogenesis and diagnostic criteria are not well-defined. Lung ultrasound and targeted neonatal echocardiography are increasingly being used to assess critically ill infants, although their combined use to improve diagnostic precision in neonatal intensive care units has not yet been described.
