Clinical evaluation of an intelligent venipuncture robotic system: performance, patient acceptance, and pre-analytical outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: In high-throughput outpatient settings, manual venipuncture is frequently constrained by extreme time pressure and inherent human operator variability, which collectively exacerbate pre-analytical errors and diminish operational efficiency. To address these clinical challenges, we conducted a retrospective study of an intelligent venipuncture robot using 13,803 clinical encounters collected over 18 months in a high-volume outpatient clinic. METHODS: We analyzed performance metrics and patient feedback across three consecutive phases to evaluate both the system's technical maturati

Towards a Conceptual Participatory Framework to Promote Health Literacy in Adolescents by Integrating Self-Determination Theory and Game Design.

Adolescents are heavy users of digital media but often lack critical skills, increasing their vulnerability to harmful online content. The integration of game elements into learning and training offers a promising strategy to support positive behavioural change and strengthen adolescents' skills. This paper describes the development of a conceptual framework for Dress-DIGITARIAN, a serious game aimed at improving health literacy, coping skills, and self-esteem, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The framework was constructed to generate higher-order understanding through a multi-leve

The Black Mother-Daughter Developmental Model: A Life Course Framework for Understanding Matrescence, Identity, and Attachment in Black Family Systems.

This study introduces the Black Mother-Daughter Developmental Model (BMDDM), a life course framework that theorizes the evolving relational, psychological, and cultural dynamics of Black mother-daughter relationships across generations. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 18 Black women aged 18 to 65 and analyzed to examine patterns of attachment, identity development, rupture, and relational repair over time. Findings yielded a five-stage developmental model: (1) Black Matrescence and Prenatal Conditions, (2) Initial Attachment,

Personalized Prediction of Acute and Chronic Postsurgical Pain - the role of Multidomain Biosignatures, Machine Learning-Based Integration, and Standardized Outcome Definitions.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Acute postsurgical pain (APSP) and chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) remain prevalent and insufficiently resolved challenges in perioperative medicine. This narrative review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding personalized pain prediction, examines existing prognostic models and their limitations, and identifies the conceptual and methodological developments most likely to advance the field toward genuine individual prediction. RECENT FINDINGS: Individual predictors, whether clinical, psychological, psychophysical, or surgical in nature, are, on their own

The Hidden Cost of Sports Injuries: A Medico-Legal Perspective on Performance, Career and Contracts.

The medico-legal assessment of sports injuries in professional athletes continues to rely on tools designed for an entirely different context. Permanent impairment tables measure the reduction in overall individual function, but not the loss of competitive performance, the reduction in expected athletic lifespan, or the impact on contracts and earnings. In this Editorial we argue that closing this gap does not require new, ad hoc composite indices, but a more rigorous and systematic integration of approaches already validated in the sports medicine and rehabilitation literature: objective quan

Statin Therapy and Cardiovascular Prevention: Contemporary Evidence, Challenges, and Future Directions-A Narrative Review.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) remains a cornerstone of cardiovascular prevention. Statins are among the most extensively studied and widely prescribed medications and have demonstrated substantial benefits in reducing major adverse cardiovascular events in both primary and secondary prevention settings. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of statin therapy in routine clinical practice is frequently compromised by poor adherence, treatment discontinuation, concerns regarding adver

Cultural Adaptation and Reliability Testing of the Coeliac Disease Food Attitudes and Behaviours Scale in Brazil.

Background: Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune chronic condition that requires a strict diet without gluten as a single effective treatment. However, adherence to a life-long gluten-free diet (GFD) may promote psychological suffering and disordered eating. The Coeliac Disease Food Attitudes and Behaviours Scale (CD-FAB) is the only instrument specifically designed to evaluate these aspects in individuals with CD. Objective: This study aimed to translate the CD-FAB and test its reliability in the Brazilian population. Methods: The research was conducted in three stages: (i) translation and c

The Impact of Societal Challenges on Mental Health Conditions: Implications for Research and Psychotherapy?

Mental health conditions cannot be studied in isolation and are increasingly studied as a complex system. Societal changes and challenges (the digital AI and social media era, climate change, inequality, polarization, war in Europe) have an impact on mental health, as well as the prevalence of mental health conditions. We have no idea what the accumulating effects of the combination of these societal challenges are on the prevalence of mental health conditions. At the same time, we need a mentally resilient population to deal with these societal challenges. Therefore, it is evident that mental

Prediction, pain, and the power of context: toward a contemporary identity for the chiropractic profession.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with low back and neck pain among the largest contributors to years lived with disability. For many people with persistent pain, mechanisms are increasingly understood as arising from altered regulation at multiple loci rather than simple ongoing tissue injury. This challenges chiropractic's long-standing reliance on body focused explanatory models centred on correcting structural lesions or dysfunction. MAIN BODY: Active Inference (AIF) provides a contemporary framework for understanding pain perception as an

When the colleague becomes the boss: Navigating the shift from peer to nurse leader.

Internal promotion is a common pathway into academic nursing leadership, with program directors, department chairs, associate deans, and deans frequently appointed from existing faculty ranks. While this practice offers institutional continuity and organizational familiarity, it introduces a transition challenge that remains underexplored in the nursing education literature: the negotiation of positional authority among individuals who were, until recently, collegial peers. This article examines the peer-to-leader transition in academic nursing through the lenses of role theory, Meleis' Transi

Cognitive impairment in kidney transplanted patients.

Chronic kidney disease affects almost all of the organs. Recently, more attention has been paid to the kidney and the central nervous system connections. In patients on kidney replacement therapy, including kidney transplantation, there is an increased prevalence of cognitive impairment, and depression and other neurological complications, such as cerebrovascular disorders and movement disorders. Kidney transplant recipients need an assessment for the risk factors and the pattern of cognitive impairment (memory, attention and executive function decline). This enables an accurate diagnosis to b

[Diagnostic approach and treatment paradigm in atrophic age related macular degeneration: Recommendations of the France Macula Federation].

Atrophic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) represents a detrimental progression of age-related maculopathy, characterized by advanced retinal lesions associated with drusen and pseudodrusen as well as alterations in the outer retinal layers and RPE. It is characterized by a thinning of the neuroretinal tissue linked to the disappearance of the outer layers of the retina and the RPE. Our goal is to offer to ophthalmologists recommendations in the diagnosis and management of atrophic AMD with a standardized approach, in order to facilitate and optimize the management of this disease.
