An amygdala-mediated simulation-to-decision cascade aligns interbrain dynamics to solve social dilemmas.

Mutual cooperation (MC) requires independent decision-makers to coordinate under uncertainty about each other's intentions. Using simultaneous intracranial electroencephalography from epilepsy-patient dyads playing a real-time iterated prisoner's dilemma, we identified neurocognitive mechanisms that enable interacting brains to align during mutual cooperation. Amygdala interbrain representational alignment (IBRA), similarity in fine-grained neural spectral patterns across partners, emerged selectively during MC and predicted trial-by-trial outcomes. Early θ-suppression-characterized IBRA refle

The Psychometric Properties and Clinical Usefulness of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale in Forensic Settings.

OBJECTIVE: The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) is a widely used measure of emotion dysregulation across clinical contexts. However, its psychometric properties and clinical utility have not been thoroughly examined in forensic populations. This study evaluated the original 36-item DERS and two short forms, the DERS-16 and the DERS-8, in two independent forensic samples from two different countries: a forensic psychiatric inpatient sample (N = 88) and a prison sample (N = 389). METHODS: Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess factor structure. Reliability was evaluated

Access to the women's Offender Personality Disorder Pathway-making criteria more gender-responsive.

INTRODUCTION: The Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Pathway for England and Wales provides specialist services to men and women with complex mental health needs, which are linked to serious and harmful offending. However, criteria for accessing such services have relied on practitioner judgement and screening items developed for use with men. Within the context of a policy and practice task and finish group, this study examined existing processes and an array of routinely monitored items with the aim of developing a gender-responsive identification tool for women's entry to the OPD Pathway t

"One more front in the dirty war": The political instrumentalisation of psychiatry and the involvement of mental health professionals in state-sponsored human rights abuses during Argentina's civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983).

This paper examines the instrumentalisation of psychiatric procedures and the complicity of physicians and mental health professionals in the state-sponsored terror of Argentina's civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983). Hitherto, these episodes have remained largely underexplored in broader historiography, as have their implications for modern psychiatric ethics. Drawing on archival records, victim testimonies, and secondary sources, this paper outlines how mental health expertise and psychiatric institutions were implicated in the junta's campaigns to subjugate perceived "subversive" tendenc

Clinical and Epidemiological Profile of Dolutegravir Use and Antiretroviral Resistance in Honduras.

Comprehensive care services (SAIs) play a pivotal role in implementing preventive strategies by offering treatments that have demonstrated efficacy, as exemplified by dolutegravir (DTG). This medication has been employed in various clinical settings because of its pronounced genetic barrier and high tolerance. To characterize the clinical and epidemiological use of dolutegravir in people living with HIV (PLHIV) treated for SAI in Honduras. Cross-sectional studies and secondary analyses of the 2020 to 2021 phenotypic database were performed with SPSS (version 20.0). Ethics Committee approval (0

Forensic Dermatology of Tattoos: Part 1. Epidemiology of Tattoos in a Forensic Setting.

A tattoo is a form of body modification that is created by inoculating pigment into the skin. Forensic dermatology involves the medical and legal assessment of the skin, mucosa, hair and nails to evaluate injury or death. Tattoos can have an integral role in a forensic dermatology evaluation. The forensic dermatology of tattoos is presented in four contributions. Part 1) discusses the epidemiology of tattoos in a forensic setting. Part 2) examines the types of tattoos that can present in a forensic setting. The third contribution in the series (Part 3) considers the cutaneous diseases, infecti

Traumatic Bereavement Among Incarcerated Women: Understanding and Responding to Complex Grief After the Death of a Child.

Incarcerated women face elevated suicide risk at the intersection of chronic loss, cumulative trauma, and constrained environments. In prison, the death of a child constitutes a profound and overlooked traumatic bereavement. This conceptual manuscript examines how carceral environments restrict privacy, autonomy, family contact, mourning rituals, and social and clinical support, thereby adversely reshaping grief. The Dual Process Model of Coping and meaning-making frameworks are integrated to explain how incarceration may constrain oscillation between loss-oriented and restoration-oriented cop

Non-invasive dual-brain stimulation facilitates social cooperation through enhancing interpersonal neural synchronization.

Reciprocal altruism-based cooperation is ubiquitous among humans and plays a crucial role in the survival and evolutionary trajectories of human beings. Prior research has been capable of comprehending social cooperation by examining the patterns of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during real bidirectional social interactions, rather than focusing on single-brain responses to external stimuli. However, the causal influence of INS on cooperative strategic behaviors remains unclear. To address this gap, we directly modulated the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ)'s INS between indi

Motherhood and imprisonment: a typology of mothers' identity after release.

PURPOSE: Imprisonment is a bitter and painful experience for women, often exacerbating the difficulties and challenges of motherhood and their relationship with their children. This study aims to explore the narratives of mothers regarding their maternal identity and present a typology of mothers with prison records as they resume contact with their children after release. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to collect data. It is based on the experiences and narratives of 18 Iranian women, all of whom had at least one child, who were either imp

Unlocking Relief: Insights into Physiotherapy-Led Spinal Telehealth in Correctional Facilities.

The global prison population has increased by 32% since 2000, driving higher demand for health care services within correctional facilities. Musculoskeletal disorders are prevalent among incarcerated people, with 52% diagnosed with chronic conditions. In-person treatments outside facility walls incur high costs and are further hindered by stigma. Telehealth services for musculoskeletal care offer a promising alternative to improve access, reduce costs, and enhance care quality. This article explores the impact and perspectives of physiotherapy-led telehealth consultations for spinal disorders

Evaluating the New TB Antigen-Based Skin Test to Diagnose TB Infection in South Africa.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) antigen-based skin tests, known as TB-specific skin tests (TBSTs), have been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to test for TB infection (TBI). In light of these new recommendations, we conducted a situational analysis and market assessment to evaluate the utility of testing for TBI in general and of the new TBSTs in South Africa. We found the following barriers to acceptability of testing for TBI overall, regardless of the test: the perceived high prevalence of TBI; prior experiences of poor TB preventive treatment (TPT) uptake, which has led to

Pulmonary Tuberculosis with Polyclonal Infection - Diagnostic Challenges and the Importance of Sequencing to the Improvement of Case Management - Case Report.

Many studies on the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) have shown that 10-20% of patients may be infected with more than one strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), during a single episode of the disease. However, data on the frequency of this phenomenon are underestimated, and methodological difficulties mean that most cases are not detected. Below we present the first case of polyclonal/mixed infection documented in Poland. We described the case of a 33-year-old Ukrainian man, imprisoned in a Polish prison, who was diagnosed with pulmonary TB confirmed by culture. During the 6-m

Assertive community treatment as an alternative to incarceration for American pretrial detainees.

In the United States and elsewhere around the world, people with serious mental illness (SMI) are overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Clinical interventions to divert such individuals out of correctional settings, including Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), have been shown to reduce rates of criminal justice recidivism when modified to allow for the use of court sanctions to encourage treatment adherence. However, these interventions are noted to be underutilized as alternative to incarceration (ATI) programs. This paper summarizes the results of a retrospective cohort study con

How the risk principle reduces recidivism: The impact of legislative revisions on the release and reoffense rates of individuals convicted of sexual offenses.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the relationship between legislative revisions regarding sexual offenses and the release decisions and recidivism rates of individuals convicted of sexual offenses. In 2008, the Austrian government passed a package of revised criminal laws aiming to decrease incarceration rates. At the same time, connecting recidivism risk to professional risk management efforts was expected to increase public safety. HYPOTHESES: Given the strong empirical background of the implemented risk assessment and management efforts, we expected both an increase in the percentage

Further mapping of the MMPI-3 onto HiTOP in a primary medical care and a college student sample.

The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP; Kotov et al., 2017, 2021) is offered as a dimensional alternative to traditional categorical diagnostic nosologies such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD). HiTOP researchers have recently published an open-source assessment system for clinical implementation, the HiTOP Digital Assessment and Tracker (Jonas et al., 2021). Here, we argue that the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3; Ben-Porath & Tellegen 2020a), given its structural similaritie

Cognitive interventions for memory and psychological well-being in aging and dementias.

The human lifespan has expanded drastically in the last few centuries, due to improvements in sanitation, medicine, and nutrition, but with this increase in longevity comes higher rates of cognitive pathology such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia; the latter is estimated to reach more than 75 million people by 2030. Pathology risk is related to measures of executive function, lifestyle factors (e.g., education, occupation, and leisure activities), and cognitive reserve. One way of building cognitive reserve may be to structure the environment to encourage lifelong engagement and

History of incarceration and age-related neurodegeneration: Testing models of genetic and environmental risks in a longitudinal panel study of older adults.

History of incarceration is associated with an excess of morbidity and mortality. While the incarceration experience itself comes with substantive health risks (e.g., injury, psychological stress, exposure to infectious disease), most individuals eventually return from prison to the general population where they will be diagnosed with the same age-related conditions that drive mortality in the non-incarcerated population but at exaggerated rates. However, the interplay between history of incarceration as a risk factor and more traditional risk factors for age-related diseases (e.g., genetic ri

Sex and aging: Perspectives of older adult women with experience of incarceration.

To explore perspectives on sexuality, sexual health, and sexual health care of older adult women with a history of criminal legal system involvement, we conducted phone interviews with women aged 50 years or older who were living in the community but had a history of jail and/or prison incarceration. Interview questions and initial analysis were guided by the sexual health framework for public health and Mitchell's sexual wellness model. Data analysis followed a framework method. Nine women, aged 53-66, participated in phone interviews between December 2020 and December 2021. Slightly over hal
