Thoracic synovial cyst as cause of cord compression in a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

An 80-year-old male patient affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease came to our attention in July 2020, for the occurrence of low back pain and lower limb weakness, and also saddle anesthesia, urinary and faecal retention were referred. His diagnosis of CMT is dated back to 1955 and through the years, the clinical picture slowly worsened but never got particularly severe. The quick symptoms outbreak and the presence of urinary disturbances were red flags, which lead us to direct the diagnostic orientation elsewhere. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the thoraco-lumbar spinal cord was then

Diagnosis and management of vulvar Darier disease: A case report.

Darier disease is an autosomal dominant disorder with hyperkeratotic papules affecting primarily seborrheic areas of the upper chest, back, forehead, scalp, nasolabial folds, ears, and, less frequently, the oral mucosa. A typical eruption consists of keratotic and crusted skin-colored papules and plaques. Pruritus occurs in 80% of patients, and pain is rare. Lesions can be triggered by exposure to ultraviolet light, heat, or stress. Secondary infections of the lesions are a common complication. A definitive diagnosis is obtained by a biopsy showing histological features such as acantholysis, s

Paragonimiasis Misdiagnosed as Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Case Report.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonosis caused by the ingestion of raw or undercooked crustaceans parasitized with metacercaria of Paragonimus spp. In Peru, Cajamarca is considered an endemic region for paragonimiasis. A 29-year-old man from the department of San Martín, Peru presented with a three-year history of cough, chest pain, fever, and hemoptysis. Treatment for tuberculosis (TB) was initiated even with negative results for sputum acid-fast bacillus (AFB), due to the patient's clinical characteristics and the high prevalence of the condition in the region. After eight months, due to the lack of an

A Case of Acute Pancreatitis: An Unusual Manifestation of Acute Q Fever.

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation affecting the exocrine region of the pancreatic parenchyma. Infectious etiologies are rare. Here we report an exceptional case of a 44-year-old woman from a rural area who was referred to our hospital with fever and abdominal pain. A physical examination revealed pale skin and epigastric tenderness. Thoracoabdominal computed tomography revealed a Balthazar score of D. Serum laboratory findings revealed hemolytic anemia, hepatic cytolysis, and high C-reactive protein level. Calcium and lipase levels were normal. There was no history of recent trauma,

[Two patients with cat scratch disease].

BACKGROUND: Cat scratch disease (CSD) is caused by Bartonella henselae infection. CSD is usually characterized by self-limiting regional lymphadenopathy. However, sometimes CSD presents as a disseminated disease with multiple organ involvement. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: We describe two patients with CSD. Patient A, an 18-year old woman, was referred because of fatigue, a subfebrile temperature and axillary lymphadenopathy. Patient B, a 50-year old man, visited the emergency ward with fever, back pain and painful inguinal lymphadenopathy. MRI showed osteitis of vertebrae and hepatic abcesses. In both

Incidental diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei by laparoscopy: a rare case from Syria.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare malignancy of the abdomen, which is usually described as a gelatinous peritoneal fluid. A 33-year-old man came to the ER complaining of recurring abdominal pain with abdominal distention for the past 3 months. Abdominal ultrasound revealed moderate amount of turbulent ascitic fluid with septations, in addition to a mass with irregular margins consisting of liquid and cysts. Abdomen and pelvis computed tomography scan showed free abdominal fluid. A decision was made for abdominal diagnostic laparoscopy with biopsies from the peritoneum, mesenteries and the

Case report: Case series of isolated acute pericarditis after SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations.

During the worldwide ongoing immunization campaign against SARS-CoV-2, growing data on very rare but potentially harmful side effects of such vaccines arise since approval trials have not been adequately powered to detect those events. Besides the already reported vaccine-related myocarditis, which primarily occurs in young male individuals, our attention was recently drawn to a series of older male and female patients, who were referred to our institutions with isolated acute pericarditis without myocardial damage, shortly after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We describe a series of five adult patie

Transanal total mesorectal excision for treating a lower rectal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor: A case report.

Rectal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are extremely rare, with no reports of their preoperative diagnosis. A 17-year-old woman who presented with low-grade fever, repeated diarrhea, constipation, and a 1-month history of anal pain was referred to our hospital. Rectal examination revealed a palpable hard mass with a smooth surface at the posterior wall 4 cm from the anal verge. Colonoscopy revealed a 4.0-cm submucosal tumor in the upper edge of the anal canal. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 5.0 × 4.0 cm-sized well-defined tumor contacting the rectum. Computed

Ultrasonographic and colour Doppler features of intrapancreatic splenic tissue in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old female neutered domestic longhair cat was referred for a 3-day history of lethargy and anorexia. Physical examination documented abdominal distension and pain, which, alongside marked electrolyte imbalances on blood biochemistry, was highly suspicious for a gastrointestinal obstruction. This was confirmed on diagnostic imaging, with abdominal ultrasonography also identifying an incidental, well-defined small lobular hypoechoic nodule adjacent to the tail of the spleen, with high vascularity on Doppler interrogation. This was identified as a focal nodule at the tip of

Hydrosalpinx in a premenarcheal 14-year-old girl with the proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the isthmus of the fallopian tube: A case report.

Hydrosalpinx is rare in childhood, and its pathogenesis may differ from that in reproductive-aged women. Herein, we report a case of hydrosalpinx in a premenarcheal 14-year-old girl, which might be caused by thickening of the smooth muscle of the fallopian tube. The patient had recurrent right lower abdominal pain and was referred to our hospital with a suspected adnexal tumor. Laparoscopy revealed a hydrosalpinx with complete obstruction of the fimbria and scar-like stenosis of the proximal ampulla. Right salpingectomy was performed because of a severe hydrosalpinx. As the patient was a virgi

A Model to Implement Standardized Virtual Care for Low Back Pain Amongst a Large Network of Providers in Urban and Rural Settings.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual care (VC) was not routinely offered for assessment of low back pain (LBP), a highly prevalent, disabling condition. COVID-19 related healthcare closures resulted in a rapid backlog of patients referred to a provincial interprofessional LBP program. Without management, these patients were at high risk of experiencing untoward outcomes. Virtual care became a logical option. However, many clinicians lacked experience and confidence with LBP virtual care (LBP-VC); and either were unfamiliar with, or did not have access to, requisite technology. Multi-stakeho

Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Diagnosis of Colon Cancer.

We present a case of a 64-year-old gentleman for whom point of care ultrasound (POCUS) expedited the diagnosis and subsequent early treatment of colon adenocarcinoma. He was referred by his primary provider to our clinic for abdominal bloating. He had no other abdominal symptoms such as abdominal pain, change in bowel habits or rectal bleeding. He had no constitutional symptoms such as weight loss. The patient's abdominal examination was also unremarkable. However, POCUS identified a 6 cm long hypoechoic circumscribed colon wall thickening around the hyperechoic pattern of bowel lumen (Pseudok

The Impact of Physical Therapy Rehabilitation on Pain and Function in a Patient With Cauda Equina Syndrome.

The human spine is a complex and robust structure. Injury to the spine may contribute to limitations in activities of daily living. In the lumbar and sacral regions, the nerve roots continue as the cauda equina. These nerves communicate with the lower limbs and pelvic organs by sending and receiving messages. Cauda equina syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening illness caused by spinal canal compression of the cauda equina. Cauda equina syndrome occurs when there is dysfunction of multiple lumbar and sacral nerve roots of the cauda equina. Here is a case of a 25-year-old male, who
