Comparing the clinical outcomes of an innovative bi-frame external fixation device compared to those of volar locking plate and external fixator device among patients with unstable distal radius fractures: a two-year retrospective comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Volar locking plate (VLP) fixation for unstable distal radius fractures (DRF) requires extensive soft tissue dissection and is associated with implant-related complications. Conventional external fixator (EF) carries risks such as reduction loss, pin loosening, and unstable traction. This study retrospectively evaluates the clinical efficacy and safety of a novel bi-frame external fixation device (BEF) compared with VLP and EF over a two-year period. METHODS: rA total of 131 patients with unstable DRF treated between 2015 and 2022 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chine

Function and Health in Adults with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy-A Follow-Up Study.

Background/Objectives: Dyskinetic cerebral palsy (DCP) often implies severe motor impairment and risk of health problems. Our aim was to follow up a group of young adults with DCP that we previously examined as children, to describe health, function, and living conditions. Methods: Interviews regarding health issues, treatments, and living conditions, and quality of life (RAND-36) and fatigue questionnaires were completed. Gross and fine motor function, communication, and speech ability were classified, and weight, height, spasticity, and dystonia were assessed and compared to previous data. J

Mechanical complications and revision following total joint arthroplasty in acromegalic patients: A nationwide US-based study.

BACKGROUND: Acromegaly is associated with significant osteoarthritis (OA) and increased risk of vertebral and hip fractures. There is limited data on total joint arthroplasty (TJA) outcomes in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we identified patients with acromegaly who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA), total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) between 2010 and 2022 using the PearlDiver national database. Patients with a prior history of osteoporosis and follow-up duration of less than one year were excluded. Non-acromegalic contro

Injury rate and characteristics in Japanese male professional ice hockey players: prospective study of 60 players over 10 seasons.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the injury rate and characteristics in Japanese male professional ice hockey players. METHODS: This study involved an inclusive cohort of male ice hockey players from a Japanese professional team competing in the 2010-2011 through the 2019-2020 seasons. An injury was defined as the 'time-loss and medical attention' definition of the International Ice Hockey Federation. All injuries that occurred during games and practice sessions were recorded daily on injury charts by the team athletic trainers and/or physician. Game-related injury rates were analysed using bot

An Institutional Standardised Protocol for the Treatment of Acute Displaced Midshaft Clavicle Fractures (ADMCFs): Conservative or Surgical Management for Active Patients?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The treatment of acute displaced midshaft clavicle fractures (ADMCFs) is still under debate. The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of our institutional protocol by comparing the clinical and radiographic outcomes of two groups of patients with ADMCFs treated operatively and non-operatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: active patients with a traumatic, isolated non-pathological ADMCF with at least 1-year clinical and radiographic follow up were included. Surgical treatment was performed in the cases where the residual displacement was higher than 140% afte

Posttraumatic Arthritis After Combined Plating of Distal Radius Fractures AO Type C: A 7-Year Follow-up of 97 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Volar locking plate fixation is the most common method of operative fixation of distal radius fractures (DRFs). For more complex cases, combined plating is an option for stabilizing intra-articular fragments. The prevalence of posttraumatic arthritis (PA) after an intra-articular DRF, and its relation to patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to study the prevalence of PA and its correlation to clinical outcome measures. METHODS: We evaluated 97 consecutive patients with intra-articular DRF, operated with combined plating, 7 years

Scaphoid Nonunion Is a Disabling Problem in a Military Population.

BACKGROUND: Scaphoid nonunion can occur in up to 55% of displaced scaphoid fractures. Long-term functional outcomes of this injury are lacking. In addition, no study has published rate of return to active military service after this injury. Our goal was to educate providers and patients on expected functional outcomes and return to duty after treatment of scaphoid nonunion. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent scaphoid nonunion repair at our institution from 2008 to 2017. The primary outcome measures were union rates, return to duty rates, and functional outc

Spontaneous humeral torsion deformity correction after displaced supracondylar fractures in children.

BACKGROUND: After displaced supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF) in children, residual deformities are common with cubitus varus (CV) being the clinically most visible. Distal fragment malrotation may lead to instability, fragment tilt and subsequent CV. Detection and assessment of malrotation is difficult and the fate of post-traumatic humeral torsion deformity is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of humeral torsion differences in children with surgically treated SCHF and to observe spontaneous changes over time. METHODS: A cohort of 27 children with displaced an

Arterial or venous free flaps for volar tissue defects of the proximal interphalangeal joint: A comparison of surgical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: For volar soft tissue defects of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint, free flaps are technically challenging, but have more esthetic and functional advantages than local or distant flaps. In this study, we compared the long-term surgical outcomes of arterial (hypothenar, thenar, or second toe plantar) and venous free flaps for volar defects of the PIP joint. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective review of free flap coverage of volar defects between the distal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joint from July 2010 to August 2019. Patients with severe crush inju

Does the posterior glenoid osteotomy reduce the rate of recurrence in patients with posterior shoulder instability - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Posterior shoulder instability (PSI) is becoming an increasingly recognised condition. A number of different treatment modalities exist to treat PSI including arthroscopic or open surgeries when non-operative treatment has failed. The primary aim of this systematic review was to analyse the rate of recurrent instability after posterior glenoid osteotomy (PGO) for recurrent PSI, while secondary aim was to identify complication rate and the amount of retroversion correction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A review of the online databases MEDLINE and Embase was conducted on 1 November 2019 ac

Influence of body mass index on health-related quality of life after surgical treatment of intra-articular distal radius fractures. A retrospective 7-year follow-up study.

Morbid obesity is associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL), increased morbidity and mortality. Little is known about the correlation between obesity and complex distal radius fractures (DRF). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of being overweight on postoperative HRQOL after surgically treated intra-articular DRF. Fifty-three patients were included in this retrospective study with 7 years' mean follow-up (mean 7.2±0.4, range 6.4-7.9 years) after volar plating of an intra-articular DRF (AO-type C). All patients were categorized by their body mass index (BM

Epidemiology of glenohumeral dislocation and subsequent instability in an urban population.

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral dislocation is the most commonly encountered adult joint instability. The epidemiology in the United Kingdom and worldwide is unclear and often limited to young, active groups that are not representative of general populations. Information regarding epidemiology and outcome from a first dislocation is useful for trauma service planning and patient counseling. We calculated the incidence of shoulder instability after a first dislocation in our urban population and investigated predictors of recurrent instability. METHODS: A prospectively collected trauma database was r

Humeral resurfacing arthroplasty in combination with latissimus dorsi tendon transfer in patients with rotator cuff tear arthropathy and preserved subscapularis muscle function: preliminary report and short-term results.

PURPOSE: Humeral resurfacing arthroplasty represents an alternative option to hemiarthroplasty for treatment of cuff tear arthropathy (CTA), with the advantages as follows: suitability for relatively young and high-demand patients because of preservation of bone stock and no loss of length, less invasive surgery, shorter operation time, no risk of periprosthetic stem fractures, and revision surgery can be undertaken easily. In the current study, resurfacing arthroplasty in combination with latissimus dorsi tendon transfer for CTA was performed. Three hypotheses: first, humeral resurfacing arth

Incidence of golf cart-related injury in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Golf carts have become a popular mode of transportation off of the links because of their small size, low maintenance, and ease of use. Case reports suggest severe, debilitating injuries as a consequence of golf cart incidents. To date, there has been no national population-based study of golf cart- related injuries. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System identified individuals who visited participating emergency departments from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2005 for injuries sustained as a result of golf carts. RESULTS: An estimated 48,255 (95% confidence

Retrograde headless compression screw fixation of olecranon stress fractures in throwing athletes: a novel technique.

BACKGROUND: An olecranon stress fracture (OSF) is a rare injury most commonly seen in high-level overhead throwing athletes with no clear consensus on surgical treatment. The most common surgical treatment described in the literature is cannulated screw fixation but there have been high rates of reported hardware irritation and need for subsequent hardware removal. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: This study describes a novel surgical technique in the treatment of OSFs in high-level throwing athletes using retrograde headless compression screws. We hypothesized that patients would have excellent outcomes
