Sociocultural values toward skin color manifest in daily behaviors, such as sun-seeking behaviors in Euro-American culture and sun-protective behaviors in Chinese culture. However, little research has investigated how attitudes toward skin color affect sun-related behaviors in the face of conflicting cultural values. This study explores how sociocultural contexts shape attitudes toward skin color and sun-related behaviors in three groups of genetically Chinese women, located on a spectrum from predominantly Chinese culture to predominantly Euro-American culture. Using ethnographic and qualitat

Clinical characteristics of skin exposed to ultraviolet and infrared radiation include dryness, dyschromia, laxity, roughness, sallowness, scaling, telangiectasia, and wrinkles. Fractional photothermolysis promotes skin remodeling by formation of new dermal collagen. The nonablative fractional diode laser (NFDL) system employs fractional photothermolysis to rejuvenate the skin, using 2 distinct handpieces for wavelengths of 1440 nm and 1927 nm. Fractional photothermolysis from nonablative fractional diode lasers facilitates delivery of small molecular-weight compounds, such as L-ascorbic acid,

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of follicular hair transplantation and mini punch graft in the treatment of stable vitiligo.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients with stable vitiligo were included in this comparative study. A single patch from each patient was divided into two halves: one half was treated by punch graft, while the other half was treated by follicular hair transplantation followed by excimer light twice weekly, and the outcome was assessed at 0, 1, 3 and 6 months post operatively by photography and quartile scale.
RESULTS: At the final visit, the percentage of improvement of vitil

Vitiligo is an acquired skin disorder characterized by milky-white macules and absence of functioning melanocytes. The cornerstone of its management is the correct categorization of a case into its 2 broad types-stable and unstable vitiligo. This distinction is at present based mainly on clinical criteria because the histopathological features are not fully established. This study was thus undertaken to examine histopathological features of vitiligo and to come up with a reliable and systematic approach toward this diagnostic challenge. All patients presenting with clinical features of vitilig

Despite residing in a country that has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, little is known about the knowledge, attitudes and sun protection practices of first generation Australian-born individuals with olive and darker skin types. Six focus groups with first generation Australian-born individuals of Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Indian background were conducted. Participants had good knowledge of the dangers of skin cancer. Most correctly perceived darker skin types as protective and believed they were at low risk of skin cancer. Most participants could recall high prof

In vivo studies of UVB effects on human skin are precluded by ethical and technical arguments on volunteers and inconceivable in cancer-prone patients such as those affected with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP). Establishing reliable models to address mechanistic and therapeutic matters thus remains a challenge. Here we have used the skin-humanized mouse system that circumvents most current model constraints. We assessed the UVB radiation effects including the sequential changes after acute exposure with respect to timing, dosage, and the relationship between dose and degree-sort of epidermal alter

Segmental vitiligo (SV) is a special form of vitiligo occurring in a dermatomal distribution, and an abnormality involving the sympathetic nerves supplying the affected dermatome is known to underlie this disorder. Previously, we have shown that SV is associated with an abnormal increase in cutaneous blood flow and adrenoceptor responses in the affected areas. Since SV is resistant to conventional forms of therapy, its management represents a challenge for dermatologists. Low energy helium-neon lasers (He-Ne laser, wavelength 632.8 nm) have been employed as a therapeutic instrument in many cli

There are at least two classic photoprotective DNA damage responses that can be elicited by UV exposure: induction of melanogenesis (tanning) and enhancement of DNA repair. Both mechanisms are mediated, at least in part, by the tumor-suppressor protein and transcription factor p53. Both of these responses can be induced in vitro as well as in vivo by small DNA fragments of specific sequences, without prior induction of actual DNA damage. The topical application of such fragments onto human skin might enhance photoprotection in human skin, as typically elicited by gradual sun exposure. The indu

The study done by the authors at the Marchoux Institute of Bamako and in 3 Malian villages of the Koutiala area (two of hyperendemic and one of hypoendemic onchocerciasis) emphasized the interest which can be represented in the epidemiologic investigations on the onchocerciasis: the tibial vitiligo and the cutaneous atrophy. The dyschromia of more suggestive appreciation is less usable. Prurigo, lichenification, hypochromia and hyperchromia have less interest in these investigations because of more other causes which can be attributed to them.

Vitiligo is a dermatological disease characterized by focal disappearance of the melanin pigment on the skin and mucous membranes of a person. Despite the variety of proposed hypotheses for the development of this pathology, the central role belongs to the autoimmune mechanism of melanocyte damage.Analysis of the results of numerous international studies confirms a pronounced tendency towards an increase in the prevalence of endocrine autoimmune diseases among patients with vitiligo compared to the general population. Such diseases include, first of all, autoimmune thyroiditis, Graves' disease

Melanoma develops from malignant transformations of the pigment-producing melanocytes. If located in the basal layer of the skin epidermis, melanoma is referred to as cutaneous, which is more frequent. However, as melanocytes are be found in the eyes, ears, gastrointestinal tract, genitalia, urinary system, and meninges, cases of mucosal melanoma or other types (e.g., ocular) may occur. The incidence and morbidity of cutaneous melanoma (cM) are constantly increasing worldwide. Australia and New Zealand are world leaders in this regard with a morbidity rate of 54/100,000 and a mortality rate of

Endogenous ochronosis (EO) or alkaptonuria is an inherited autosomal recessive disease caused by the insufficiency of the enzyme homogentisic acid dioxygenase. This disturbance causes an accumulation and increased renal excretion of homogentisic acid (AHG), which manifests as dark urine when it oxidizes on contact with air. Other clinical manifestations of OE are the result of the deposit of AHG in the form of ochronotic pigment at the level of collagen in the skin and cartilage, where it causes blue-gray cutaneous hyperpigmentation, degenerative arthropathy, valvular disease, and other multis

The mongolian spot, nevus of Ota, and nevus of Ito are the most common morphologic forms of the dermal melanocytoses, a group of benign pigmented lesions histologically characterized by the presence of melanocytes within the dermis. Nevus of Ito is clinically distinct, presenting with unilateral, bluish gray, patchy discolorations in the skin within the distributions of the posterior supraclavicular and lateral cutaneous brachial nerves. Although all dermal melanocytoses are generally considered benign, rare cases of malignant transformation associated with nevus of Ota have been described. On

Chromoblastomycosis is a cutaneous and subcutaneous mycotic disease caused by the dematiaceous (black) fungi. Five species of fungi are known generally to be the cause: Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Phialophora verrucosa, Cladosporium carrionii, F. compacta and Rhinocladiella cerphilum. In infected tissue they can appear as pigmented sclerotic bodies, commonly called 'copper pennies', which are pathognomonic of chromoblastomycosis. The infection usually occurs through traumatic skin inoculation, with the majority of lesions occurring on the feet and legs of outdoor workers. We report a patient in whom t

A 2-year-old female Boxer dog was presented with a history of skin lesions that started 1 month after being given oral glucocorticoids for a neurologic problem. Clinically, the animal had focal areas of alopecia with papules and nodules often with ulceration overlain by crusts. Lesions were most common on the dorsum and the lateral aspects of the trunk and extremities. Histologic evaluation revealed pigmented fungal organisms within the lumina of hair follicles and throughout the dermis and subcutis. These organisms were associated with a multinodular, pyogranulomatous luminal folliculitis/fur
