Evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea prevalence in mothers of infants with low birth weight and its relationship with serum uric acid levels as a hypoxia marker.

OBJECTIVE: Serum uric acid level, which is an oxidative stress marker, may increase in some conditions that lay the ground for the hypoxia. However, recent literature lacks studies with large series on this subject. We aimed to examine the incidence of OSAS in mothers who delivered a low birth weight baby and its association with serum uric acid levels as a hypoxia marker. METHODS: We enrolled 143 pregnant women, 44 of whom delivered a low birth weight (LBW) baby. We made a face-to-face interview in which we asked the questions in the patient follow-up form, comprising three sections. The for

Severity of obstructive sleep apnea is associated with the nocturnal fluctuation of pulse rate, but not with that of blood pressure, in older hypertensive patients receiving calcium channel blockers.

AIM: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased variability in nocturnal blood pressure (BP). Calcium channel blockers (CCB) are superior to other classes of antihypertensives in decreasing BP variability. We investigated whether OSA severity is associated with nocturnal BP variability in older hypertensive patients treated with CCB. METHODS: We measured home systolic and diastolic BP and pulse rate (PR) automatically during sleep at an interval of an hour once a week using an electronic sphygmomanometer in 29 hypertensive patients (aged ≥65 years) receiving CCB. We calculated

[Fiberoptic endoscopy confirms the cause of upper respiratory obstruction in small children. The most common causes to referrals are sleep apnea syndrome and inspiratory stridor].

Guidelines for the clinical investigation of young children with stridor and sleep apnea are presented. Clinical examination and flexible videolaryngoscopy performed in local anaesthesia are the most important diagnostic tools for this group of children. If the impairment is severe or an objective evaluation is needed the child should also undergo nocturnal polygraphic recording and lung function tests. Out of 43 children examined with flexible videolaryngoscopy 21 had positive findings, laryngomalacia being the most common diagnosis. Flexible videolaryngoscopy is a good complement to laryngos

The effect of bilevel ventilation or modified continuous positive airway pressure on treatment adherence in adults with obstructive sleep apnea: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Modified continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) modalities providing pressure support (bilevel PAP (BPAP) or expiratory pressure relief algorithms (EPRAs)) are routinely used for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment, despite little evidence of increased adherence and improved downstream outcomes. An updated, comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of pressure support on adherence is needed. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Clinicaltrials.gov and major abstract repositories were searched from database inception until 4/7/2026 for randomized and non-randomized con

A Wearable Respiratory Monitor for Home-Based Screening and Stratification of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Pilot Study in Participants with Intermediate-to-High STOP-Bang Scores.

Access to in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) is restricted by prolonged waiting lists, and first-night effects can distort typical sleep architecture. This study evaluates the PneumoWave biosensor as a scalable, unobtrusive alternative for longitudinal single-channel home sleep apnea monitoring. Over three nights in an uncontrolled home environment, the biosensor's respiratory rate agreement was evaluated against smartwatch-derived respiratory rate estimates, whilst apnea/hypopnea detection was compared with concurrent pulse oximetry. PneumoWave and smartwatch devices demonstrated good correl

In-Hospital Outcomes of Type A Aortic Dissection Repair in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Population Study of National Inpatient Sample From 2015 to 2020.

BackgroundObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a recognized risk factor for aortic dissection development due to its association with arterial hypertension, negative intrathoracic pressures during respiratory efforts, and further development of aortic false lumen. However, the impact of OSA on the outcomes of type A aortic dissection (TAAD) repair has not been extensively investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a population-based analysis of the impact of OSA on in-hospital outcomes following TAAD repair.MethodsPatients who underwent TAAD repair were identified in National Inpatient S

Screening for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children and adolescents with obesity: A scoping review of national and international pediatric obesity and pediatric OSA management guidelines.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent complication that affects up to 60% of children and adolescents with obesity. It is associated with poorer cardiometabolic outcomes and neurocognitive deficits. Appropriate screening and intervention for OSA are crucial in the management of children with obesity. We performed a scoping review of international and national pediatric obesity (n = 30) and pediatric OSA (n = 10) management guidelines to evaluate the recommendations on OSA screening in pediatric obesity. Sixteen (53%) of the pediatric obesity guidelines had incorporated OSA screening to

Decision making for position-dependent obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the basis of patient information and physical examinations of the upper airway, acquired on an outpatient basis.

CONCLUSIONS: Patients with body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2 and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are highly suspicious for position-dependent OSAS. Diagnosis of position-dependent/position-independent OSAS can be difficult in patients satisfying both 'BMI >25 kg/m2' and 'any of tongue enlargement (TE), palatine tonsil hypertrophy (PTH) and obstruction by Muller's maneuver (OMM)'. Polysomnography is warranted in such patients. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to retrospectively elucidate criteria for differentiating position-dependent OSAS on the basis of patient information and physical e

Outcome of restless legs severity after continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) treatment in patients affected by the association of RLS and obstructive sleep apneas.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The association of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) has been reported in the literature for many years. Nevertheless, this pathological association has not yet been extensively studied and many questions remain unanswered. The primary concern of this study is to evaluate the influence of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (n-CPAP) therapy on daytime sleepiness and fatigue as well as the presence of a possible long-term beneficial effect on RLS severity and, secondarily, to ascertain the clinical, neurophysiological and poly

The association between obstructive sleep apnea and symptoms of anxiety and depression: An 8-year follow-up using data from a Brazilian population-based EPISONO study.

The interplay between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and psychiatric disturbances has gained increasing attention in Sleep Medicine. This study investigated the relationship of OSA with symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as changes in these symptoms from baseline to the 8-year follow-up. Data were derived from the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO), a longitudinal population-based cohort with baseline assessment conducted in 2007 (N = 1042) and follow-up in 2015 (N = 712). OSA diagnosis was defined by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) obtained through full-night polysomnography
