Coexisting schwannoma of the gallbladder and sarcoidosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas originate from Schwann cells, which are constituents of peripheral nerve sheaths, and can occur anywhere in the body at any age. Most occur in soft tissues such as subcutaneous tissues and muscles, occurrence in the abdominal cavity being relatively rare. In particular, schwannomas of the gallbladder are extremely rare. We herein report a rare case of a schwannoma that coexisted with systemic sarcoidosis and presented as a steroid-resistant mass in the gallbladder wall. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old woman was found to have thickening of the gallbladder wall during a

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Anterior Maxilla Mimicking a Chronic Apical Abscess.

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are malignant neoplasms of the lymphatic system, typically occurring in the fifth through seventh decades of life. Tumors develop from abnormal lymphocyte proliferation and accumulation. Although a majority of NHLs occur in nodal regions, 40% of cases appear in extranodal sites involving the stomach, spleen, Waldeyer's ring, central nervous system, lung, skin, and bone. Extranodal NHL presents a diagnostic challenge because it may mimic endodontic disease when occurring in intraosseous and soft tissue sites. This case report presents misdiagnosis of a diffuse large

Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome With a Mandible Advanced Device Increases Nitric Oxide Release and Ameliorates Pulmonary Hypertension in Rabbits.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of mandible advanced device (MAD) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) on nitric oxide (NO) release and changes in pulmonary artery pressure and structure. METHODS: Thirty male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into OSAHS, MAD, and control groups (n = 10 per group). The soft palate of rabbits in the OSAHS and MAD groups was injected with hydrophilic polyacrylamide gel to induce OSAHS. The MAD group wore a MAD, and the control group was not treated. Cone-beam computed tomography scans and polysomnography recordings were

Eagle syndrome after a fracture of complete ossified stylohyoid ligament from indirect trauma treated using local steroid injection: A case report.

RATIONALE: Stylohyoid complex syndrome is characterized by various cervicopharyngeal symptoms related to the ossification and abnormality of the styloid process, stylohyoid ligament, and the lesser horn of the hyoid bone. Eagle syndrome is the most well-known of the spectra of these diseases. Although surgical treatment is considered effective, conservative treatment may be beneficial if symptoms arise because of inflammation of the soft tissues attached to the styloid process or hyoid bone. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 68-year-old man presented with pain in the right side of the neck and odynophagia

3D facial morphometry in Italian patients affected by Aicardi syndrome.

Aicardi syndrome (AIC) is a rare congenital neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown etiology, that affects almost exclusively females, originally characterized by corpus callosum agenesis, chorioretinal lacunae, and infantile spasms. The current diagnostic criteria also include qualitative facial features (prominent premaxilla, upturned nasal tip, decreased nasal bridge angle, sparse lateral eyebrows, and microphthalmia) that still need quantification. A three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetric assessment of 11 Italian females, age 7-32 years, who satisfied AIC criteria, was performed. Linear dis

Neglected subluxation of the hip after trauma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: In children, the pelvis contains a large amount of cartilage components; therefore, when traumatic hip dislocation spontaneously reduces, it can be impossible to see on X-ray or computed tomography (CT) images in some cases, which can delay its detection. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 10-year-old boy who was injured by being hit by a car while walking. Upon diagnosis of pelvic ring fracture, the patient received conservative treatment. Seven months after injury, the patient was referred to our department with the chief complaint of limping. DIAGNOSIS: Marked limita

Increased volume and collagen crosslinks drive soft tissue contribution to post-traumatic elbow contracture in an animal model.

Post-traumatic joint contracture (PTJC) in the elbow is a biological problem with functional consequences. Restoring elbow motion after injury is a complex challenge because contracture is a multi-tissue pathology. We previously developed an animal model of elbow PTJC using Long-Evans rats and showed that the capsule and ligaments/cartilage were the primary soft tissues that caused persistent joint motion loss. The objective of this study was to evaluate tissue-specific changes within the anterior capsule and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) that led to their contribution to elbow contracture

Do spacer blocks accurately estimate deformity correction and gap balance in total knee arthroplasty? A prospective study with computer navigation.

BACKGROUND: Spacer blocks are used commonly in knee arthroplasty to estimate gaps and ligament balance. Their use continues along with modern technology despite dearth of literature regarding their accuracy and reliability. This prospective study aims to determine the difference in values of gap and balance measurements between spacers and trials in computer assisted TKA. METHODS: 50 patients with moderate varus deformity of <20° undergoing primary TKA were recruited for this prospective study. After navigation assisted cuts and requisite ligament release, gaps and balance were recorded in ex

Challenges in the treatment of a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal soft-tissue sarcoma is a very rare neoplasm, the most frequent histological subtype is liposarcoma with up to 45% of all cases. Unspecific clinical presentation, late diagnosis and high local recurrence rate represent important problems in clinical practice. We present the case of an adult patient with an unusual large liposarcoma of the retroperitoneum analyzing diagnostic workup, surgical approach and therapeutic strategies. CASE REPORT: A 68-years old female was admitted with weight gain (+12 kg) and increasing abdominal girth. Computed tomography scan imaging s

Complete Resection of a Large Mediastinal Calcifying Fibrous Tumor.

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a benign tumor entity which can present in a variety of different sites. Till date, eight cases with a mediastinal manifestation have been published in literature. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for this often incidentally detected tumor. Surgery of thoracic CFT may be challenging due to its localization within the mediastinum. A 10-year old boy with a right-sided thoracic pectus carinatum-like deformity was referred for further evaluation, incidentally, revealing a mediastinal mass in computed tomography (CT). Laboratory results were all within n

Determination of optical properties of human tissues obtained from parotidectomy in the spectral range of 250 to 800 nm.

The optical properties of human tissues are an important parameter in medical diagnostics and therapy. The knowledge of these parameters can encourage the development of automated, computer-driven optical tissue analysis methods. We determine the absorption coefficient μa and scattering coefficient <inline-formula>μs'</inline-formula> of different tissue types obtained during parotidectomy in the wavelength range of 250 to 800 nm. These values are determined by high precision integrating sphere measurements in combination with an optimized inverse Monte Carlo simulation. To conserve the optica

Autologous Fat Grafting in Young Patients: A Simple and Effective Way to Achieve Facial Balance.

GOALS/PURPOSE: Rhinoplasty is the most common procedure seen in the teenage population. Many of these patients have facial imbalance both recognized and unrecognized by the individual and family. Most often it involves chin or midface deficiency. When the discussion involves the possibility of additional surgery, such as an alloplastic chin implant or a surgical osteotomy, the conversation halts because the patient and family seek a simpler solution.Autologous fat transfer is a useful adjunct to achieve facial balance in chin and cheek in the teen population. More recently, we have been using

In Vivo Quantification of the Intraglottal Pressure: Modal Phonation and Voice Onset.

Intraglottal pressure is the driving force of vocal fold vibration. Its time course during the open phase of the vibratory cycle is essential in the mechanics of phonation, but measuring it directly is difficult and may hinder spontaneous voicing. However, it can be computed from the in vivo measured transglottal flow and glottal area (hence the air particle velocity) on the basis of the Bernoulli energy law and the interaction with the inertance of the vocal tract. As to sustained modal phonation, calculations are presented for the two possible shapes of glottal duct: convergent and divergent

Age-related alterations in swallowing biomechanics.

BACKGROUND: Aging rodent models allow for the discovery of underlying mechanisms of cranial muscle dysfunction. Methods are needed to allow quantification of complex, multivariate biomechanical movements during swallowing. Videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VSS) are the standard of care in assessment of swallowing disorders in patients and validated quantitative, kinematic, and morphometric analysis methods have been developed. Our purpose was to adapt validated morphometric techniques to the rodent to computationally analyze swallowing dysfunction in the aging rodent. METHODS: VSS, quantitat
