Study on the characteristics analysis and recognition method of vowels in patients with type Ⅱ diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can induce impairments in vocal fold function and neural control, resulting in systematic changes in vowel articulation that may serve as objective biomarkers for speech-based disease detection. Traditional sentence-level approaches are susceptible to linguistic variability, limiting their ability to extract disease-specific acoustic features and reducing overall robustness. This study presents a vowel-based intelligent recognition framework for T2DM (VDT2) designed to capture stable and discriminative pathological speech features. The framework combines Lasso r

Ultrasound-Responsive Antibacterial Surfaces on Titanium Alloys: A Narrative Review.

Ultrasound-responsive antibacterial therapies represent a cutting-edge approach to combating implant-associated infections, particularly advantageous because of ultrasound's non-invasive nature, deep penetration, and ability to target infected areas. However, most previous studies have been devoted to ultrasound-responsive nanomaterials, hydrogels, and polymer systems. Research on ultrasound-responsive surfaces on titanium remains in its early stages and is extremely limited. This review primarily focuses on the design principles and construction strategies for ultrasound-responsive antibacter

Best Cochlear Locations for Delivering Interaural Timing Cues in Electric Hearing.

Growing numbers of children and adults who are deaf are eligible to receive cochlear implants (CI), which provide access to everyday sound. CIs in both ears (bilateral CIs or BiCIs) are becoming standard of care in many countries. However, their effectiveness is limited because they do not adequately restore the acoustic cues essential for sound localization, particularly interaural time differences (ITDs) at low frequencies. The cochlea, the auditory sensory organ, typically transmits ITDs more effectively at the apical region, which is specifically "tuned" to low frequencies. We hypothesized

An Experimental Performance Assessment of Temporal Convolutional Networks for Microphone Virtualization in a Car Cabin.

In this paper, the experimental results on microphone virtualization in realistic automotive scenarios are presented. A Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) was designed in order to estimate the acoustic signal at the driver's ear positions based on the knowledge of monitoring microphone signals at different positions-a technique known as virtual microphone. An experimental setup was implemented on a popular B-segment car to acquire the acoustic field within the cabin while running on smooth asphalt at variable speeds. In order to test the potentiality of the TCN, microphone signals were recor

Noninvasive Bolus Transit Detection in Cervical Esophagus Utilizing Ultrasound Characteristics.

This pilot study aims to identify characteristic A-mode ultrasound features relevant to noninvasive detection of esophageal bolus transit in the proximal esophagus. Ultrasound signals at a lateral neck site were obtained via a single-element ultrasonic transducer with synchronous videofluoroscopic swallowing studies images of swallows of differing viscosities in 21 adult dysphagia outpatients. Characteristic ultrasound features were extracted to differentiate a bolus-filled from a collapsed esophagus. From 21 subjects, 412 swallows exhibited 4 reproducible waveform patterns associated with bol

Latent neural dynamics encode temporal context in speech.

Direct neural recordings from human auditory cortex have demonstrated encoding for acoustic-phonetic features of consonants and vowels. Neural responses also encode distinct acoustic amplitude cues related to timing, such as those that occur at the onset of a sentence after a silent period or the onset of the vowel in each syllable. Here, we used a group reduced rank regression model to show that distributed cortical responses support a low-dimensional latent state representation of temporal context in speech. The timing cues each capture more unique variance than all other phonetic features a

Optical-resolution functional gastrointestinal photoacoustic endoscopy based on optical heterodyne detection of ultrasound.

Photoacoustic endoscopy shows promise in the detection of gastrointestinal cancer, inflammation, and other lesions. High-resolution endoscopic imaging of the hemodynamic response necessitates a small-sized, high-sensitivity ultrasound sensor. Here, we utilize a laser ultrasound sensor to develop a miniaturized, optical-resolution photoacoustic endoscope. The sensor can boost the acoustic response by a gain factor of ωo/Ω (the frequency ratio of the signal light and measured ultrasound) by measuring the acoustically induced optical phase change. As a result, we achieve a noise-equivalent pressu

Manipulation and Mechanical Deformation of Leukemia Cells by High-Frequency Ultrasound Single Beam.

Ultrasound single-beam acoustic tweezer system has attracted increasing attention in the field of biomechanics. Cell biomechanics play a pivotal role in leukemia cell functions. To better understand and compare the cell mechanics of the leukemia cells, herein, we fabricated an acoustic tweezer system in-house connected with a 50-MHz high-frequency cylinder ultrasound transducer. Selected leukemia cells (Jurkat, K562, and MV-411 cells) were cultured, trapped, and manipulated by high-frequency ultrasound single beam, which was transmitted from the ultrasound transducer without contacting any cel

Contact Pressure Between the Vocal Folds in Reinke's Edema: Experimental Observations on an Excised Human Larynx.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the range of values of the contact pressure between the membranous vocal folds with Reinke's edema and to compare it to those observed in the absence of such a lesion. METHODS: Two human larynges were separately tested on the experimental bench, one of them with a bilateral loose swelling of the vocal folds. Once in a glottal prephonatory configuration, airflow was increased until achievement of self-sustained oscillations while recording aerodynamic, acoustic, electroglottographic data, and contact pressure between the folds. RESULTS: We observed well-documented variat

ACTIVE MIDDLE EAR VIBRANT SOUNDBRIDGE SOUND IMPLANT.

The Vibrant Soundbridge represents a new approach to hearing improvement in the form of active implantable middle ear hearing device. Unlike conventional acoustic hearing aids, which increase the volume of sound that goes to the eardrum, the Vibrant Soundbridge bypasses the ear canal and eardrum by directly vibrating the small bones in the middle ear. Because of its design, no portion of the device is placed in the ear canal itself. The Vibrant Soundbridge has been approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment option for adults with moderate to severe sensorineural, conductive or mixed

Relative Location of Fundus Meatus Acustici Interni Via Porus Acusticus Internus in Facial Nerve Decompression.

Facial neural edema is the pathophysiological base of Bell's palsy. The middle cranial fossa approach is used to relieve the oppression of facial nerve at its most narrow course in the facial canal. In this research, the authors mainly discussed the internal auditory canal segment of facial nerve, completely in the shadow of the bony structure, which is inconvenient for transmastoid decompression. Therefore, the objective was to explore the definite position of the fundus meatus acustici interni from internal acoustic pore. Two hundred persons (age 22-60, 100 men and 100 women), presenting wit

The measurement of Eustachian tube function in a hyperbaric chamber using an ear canal microphone.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to further the understanding of the opening of the Eustachian tube in relation to changes in barometric pressure. DESIGN: An ear canal microphone was used to measure the specific sounds related to tube opening and possible eardrum movements. Five subjects with normal tube function were examined in a hyperbaric chamber (up to 304 kPa). All active and passive equalization events were recorded and correlated with the subjectively perceived pressure regulation in the measured ear. RESULTS: The signals recorded were clear and reproducible. The acoustic ana

Size does matter: crocodile mothers react more to the voice of smaller offspring.

Parental care is widespread in Archosaurs (birds, crocodilians, dinosaurs and pterosaurs), and this group provides a useful model for the evolution of parent-offspring interactions. While offspring signalling has been well-studied in birds, the modulation of parental care in crocodilians remains an open question. Here we show that acoustic communication has a key role in the dynamics of crocodilian' mother-offspring relationships. We found embedded information about the emitter's size in juvenile calls of several species, and experimentally demonstrated that Nile crocodile mothers breeding in

Implementing two treatment approaches to childhood dysarthria.

The paucity of evidence and detail in the literature regarding speech treatment for children with dysarthria due to cerebral palsy (CP) renders it difficult for researchers to replicate studies and make further inroads into this area in need of exploration. Furthermore, for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) wishing to follow treatments that the literature indicates have promise, little guidance is available on the details of the treatments that yielded the positive results. The present article details the implementation of two treatment approaches in speech treatment research for children wi

Imaging review of neurofibromatosis: helpful aspects for early detection.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is divided into two types, NF type 1 and NF type 2. Optic nerve gliomas have a high degree of association with NF type 1. NF 2, less commonly seen, is a complex of cutaneous and deep neural tumors. It is an autosomal dominant familial disorder in which CNS is affected in about 15% of the cases. Bilateral acoustic neuromas are pathognomonic of NF type 2 which may be associated with meningiomas or ependymomas. Typical clinical manifestations of neurofibromatosis are cafe-au-lait spots and multiple cutaneous tumors. There is bone involvement as scoliosis, pseudoarthrosis of

What's the buzz? Ultrasonic and sonic warning signals in caterpillars of the great peacock moth (Saturnia pyri).

Caterpillars have many natural enemies and, therefore, have evolved a diversity of antipredator strategies. Most research focuses on those strategies (crypsis, countershading, and warning coloration) targeting visually guided predators. In contrast, defensive sounds, although documented for more than a century, have been poorly studied. We report on a novel form of sound production--chirping--in caterpillars of the common European Great Peacock moth (Saturnia pyri). Chirps are broadband, with dominant peaks ranging between the sonic (3.7 kHz) and ultrasonic (55.1 kHz) and are generated by a ra

Effects of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with Harmonic Scalpel on speech and voice.

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in acoustic features of speech and voice after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) with the Harmonic Scalpel (HS), using the multidimensional voice program (MDVP) in conjunction with other tests. Before and 6 months after surgery, phonetically balanced sentences and sustained vowels a, e, i were carried out and digitalized with MDVP in all the patients, as an evaluation of nasal resonance (trough the Glatzel and the Gutzmann tests), speech articulation and voice handicap index (VHI). These parameters were estimated: average of fundamental frequency, J

Mondini-like malformation mimicking otosclerosis and superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

In 2003, it was reported that superior semicircular canal dehiscence can mimic otosclerosis because of low-frequency bone conduction hearing gain and dissipation of air-conducted acoustic energy through the dehiscence. We report the case of a 17-year-old girl with left-sided combined hearing loss thought to be due to otosclerosis. Bone conduction thresholds were -10 dB at 250 and 500 Hz and she had a 40 dB air-bone gap at 250 Hz. When a tuning fork was placed at her ankle she heard it in her left ear. Acoustic reflexes and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials could be elicited bilaterally. Im
