Resting high-frequency heart rate variability is related to resting brain perfusion.

We examined the neural correlates of resting cardiac vagal activity in a sample of 432 participants (206 male; 61 African American; mean age 42 years). Pulsed arterial spin labeling was used to quantify whole brain and regional cerebral blood flow at rest. High-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) was used to measure cardiac vagal activity at rest. The primary aim was to determine whether brain regions implicated in regulating cardiac vagal reactions were also related to cardiac vagal activity at rest, and whether these associations varied by sex or race. Brain areas previously related to

[The significance of different 5-HT-receptors in regulation of gastrointestinal motility].

Serotonergic mechanisms are involved in many, if not all digestive functions of the gastrointestinal tract. A special role is played by serotoninergic structures in the neuronal control of motor activity. The study of these structures is of particular interest due to the widespread occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome, covering up to 20% of the adult population, which makes the research in this area up to date and in demand. Acute experiments were performed on 102 Wistar rats in 6 series. Experiments were carried out under general anesthesia (Nembutal, 60 mg/kg) and mechanical lung ventilati

Electroencephalographic and autonomic alterations in subjects with frequent nightmares during pre-and post-REM periods.

Abnormal arousal processes, sympathetic influences, as well as wake-like alpha activity during sleep were reported as pathophysiological features of Nightmare Disorder. We hypothesized that in Nightmare Disorder, wake-like cortical activity and peripheral measures linked to arousals would be triggered by physiological processes related to the initiation of REM periods. Therefore, we examined electroencephalographic (EEG), motor and autonomous (cardiac) activity in a group of nightmare (NM) and healthy control (CTL) subjects during sleep-state-transitions while controlling for the confounding e

Signaling prodromes of sudden cardiac death.

The new criteria in detection of ARVC/D produced more subtle noninvasive parameters that raised sensitivity in diagnosis. Since heart rate dynamics have prognostic significance for the progression of a disease and for mortality, the main objective was to explore its value in disclosing risk for serious arrhythmias. Out of 100 ARVC/D patients, 35 with normal ECG Holter recordings (PVC<100) and no medical treatment (either antiarrhythmic or proarrhythmic drugs) were analyzed according to severity of ARVC/D (Group 1/mild, n=23 and Group 2/overt, n=12) and regarding positive late potentials (noise

A comprehensive review with potential significance during skull base and neck operations, Part II: glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory, and hypoglossal nerves and cervical spinal nerves 1-4.

Knowledge of the possible neural interconnections found between the lower cranial and upper cervical nerves may prove useful to surgeons who … branches or between these nerves and the first four cervical spinal nerves; the contribution of the autonomic nervous system to these neural plexuses is also briefly reviewed. Part II is presented in this article. Extensive and variable neural anastomoses exist between the lower cranial nerves and between the upper cervical nerves in such a way that these nerves with thei …

[Autonomic regulation of the heart rate in infants with cerebral hypoxia-ischemia of I-II degrees].

Characteristics of psychomotor development and neurohumoral regulation of the cardiac heart rate in 34 infants with cerebral hypoxia-ischemia of I-II degrees, depending on the leading syndrome, have been studied. Individual-typological features of psychomotor development of infants with perinatal transient posthypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, depending on central regulatory mechanisms, are defined. The data on adaptation mechanisms and sequence of their involvement into the process of the formation of motor functions in infants are presented.

The changing landscape of spinal cord injury.

In the past quarter century, spinal cord injury medicine has welcomed the proliferation of new medications and technologies that improve the survival and quality of life for people with spinal cord injury, but also endured the failure of strategies we hoped would salvage the cord in the acute phase. Surgical decompression and spinal stabilization should be pursued whenever indicated and feasible; however, there is no compelling evidence that early decompression facilitates neurological improvement. Methylprednisolone, the subject of over two decades of trials, has proven to be of marginal bene

Poikilothermia in a 38-year-old Fabry patient.

A Fabry patient with poikilothermia is described. Laboratory investigations, neuro-imaging and autonomic function tests did not disclose a cause. Assessment of intra-epidermal nerve fibre density and quantitative sensory testing revealed small fibre neuropathy with a highly impaired cold sensation. We speculate that the poikilothermia is either caused by a vascular lesion in the hypothalamus not visible on MRI or by small fibre neuropathy leading to disturbed body temperature perception and therefore impaired thermoregulation.

The von Economo neurons in frontoinsular and anterior cingulate cortex in great apes and humans.

The von Economo neurons (VENs) are large bipolar neurons located in frontoinsular (FI) and anterior cingulate cortex in great apes and human … natal brains of apes and humans. This asymmetry in VEN numbers may be related to asymmetries in the autonomic nervous system. The activity of the inferior anterior insula, which contains FI, is related to physiological changes in the body, decision-making, error recognition, and awareness. The VENs appear to be projection neurons, although their targets are unknown. We ma …

[Autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy: a case series of six patients and literature review].

PURPOSE: Auto-immune autonomic ganglionopathy is a recently described clinical entity within the spectrum of autonomic neuropathies. Patients with auto-immune autonomic ganglionopathy typically present with rapid onset of severe autonomic failure. Acetylcholine receptor ganglionic antibodies, directed against ganglionic synapsis, disrupt synaptic transmission in autonomic ganglia and lead to autonomic failure. These antibodies are specific for auto-immune autonomic ganglionopathy and are present in 50% of patients. METHODS: Descriptive retrospective study. We report six French patients who pr

Successful use of ivabradine in a case of exaggerated autonomic dysfunction.

We present a 30-year-old male with complex and predominantly cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction. He had frequent syncopal attacks and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Physical, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic findings were unremarkable. Syncopal attacks were precipitated by emotional stress, upright position, and micturition. Electrocardiograms obtained immediately after syncopal events revealed PAF with a low ventricular rate, which spontaneously returned to sinus rhythm without any medication. Syncopal events were suggestive of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (PO

[Other non-motor disorders in Parkinson's disease].

INTRODUCTION: In addition to the classic triad (tremor, rigidity and akinesia), Parkinson's disease (PD) is also accompanied by several non-motor disorders. AIM: To carry out an updated review of these non-motor symptoms in terms of their pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical features and treatment. DEVELOPMENT: Autonomic disorders such as seborrhoeic dermatitis and disorders involving sweating, fatigue, weight loss or respiratory problems (dyspnea, inspiratory stridor) are highly prevalent and very disabling symptoms. In addition, they may be the main problem in a particular phase of PD (

[The morphological features of the nervous and vascular components of communication systems in the cervix uteri].

The investigation has indicated the presence of adrenergic and cholinergic autonomic nerve terminals (ANT) in the tissues of squamous cell carcinomas of the cervix uteri in a tumor growth area and contralaterally. Heterogeneity of the local neuromediator background in the tumor growth area and contralaterally may be explained, by studying the specific features of the cell microenvironment of ANT.

Innervation of lung and heart in the ray-finned fish, bichirs.

Anatomical and functional studies of the autonomic innervation in the lung and the heart of the bichirs are lacking. The present review paper describes the presence of nerve fibers located in the muscle layers of the lung and its submucosa, the collection of unipolar neurons found in the submucosal and muscle layers of the glottis in a bichir species (Polypterus bichir bichir). Putative oxygen chemoreceptive, neuroepithelial cells (NECs) in the lung mucosa are also included. The latter share many immunohistochemical characteristics similar to those observed in the carotid body and neuroepithel

Attenuated pre-ejection period response to tyramine in patients with cardiac sympathetic denervation.

Stress is a well-known factor affecting cardiac contractility through the cardiac sympathetic nerves. A positive inotropic effect of the cardiac sympathetic nerves on the myocardium is reflected by pre-ejection period (PEP) shortening. Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (NOH) (PD + NOH) or with pure autonomic failure (PAF) have markedly decreased myocardial 6-[(18)F]Fluorodopamine-derived radioactivity, reflecting cardiac sympathetic denervation. The functional effects of the cardiac sympathetic denervation have been unknown. We measured PEP and heart r

Abnormal autonomic cardiac response to transient hypoxia in sickle cell anemia.

The objective of this study was to non-invasively assess cardiac autonomic control in subjects with sickle cell anemia (SCA) by tracking the changes in heart rate variability (HRV) that occur following brief exposure to a hypoxic stimulus. Five African-American SCA patients and seven healthy control subjects were recruited to participate in this study. Each subject was exposed to a controlled hypoxic stimulus consisting of five breaths of nitrogen. Time-varying spectral analysis of HRV was applied to estimate the cardiac autonomic response to the transient episode of hypoxia. The confounding e
