Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is a gram-negative bacillus and is a rare cause of opportunistic infections. Literature shows that this gram-negative bacillus may cause early-onset sepsis in neonates and immunocompromised adults; however, it is a rare cause of late-onset sepsis or meningitis in neonates. We hereby delineate a case of a preterm neonate, born at 35 weeks of gestation, presenting to us on the eleventh day after birth, with fever, tachycardia, and delayed reflexes. The neonate was managed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Initial laboratory tests, blood, and cerebrospinal…

Composting generates odorous gases, including ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Biological Trickling Filter (BTF) is effective for odor treatment, but it may have limitations with hydrophobic VOCs. In this study, a strain of Bacillus subtilis with ammonia-reducing ability, a strain of Bacillus cereus with desulfurization ability and a strain of Schizophyllum commune with the ability to degrade dimethyl disulfide were isolated and screened. The three strains were combined to create synthetic microbial consortia for enhancing odor treatment in the …

The photocatalytic inactivation of Bacillus subtilis spores in air was evaluated employing a fixed-bed reactor with TiO2-coated glass rings, under artificial UV-A radiation. Calculations of the radiation effectively absorbed inside the reactor were carried out by Monte Carlo simulations. The photocatalytic inactivation was assessed by analyzing the viability of the microorganisms retained by the coated glass rings inside the reactor at different irradiation periods. The initial concentration of the spores was reduced by almost 55% at the end of the experiment (12 h). Complementary assays were …

Most cases of osteomyelitis in children are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, although Kingella kingae, various streptococci, and Salmonella species also underlie this condition. Organisms such as Mycobacterium, Histoplasma, and Cryptococcus are much less commonly identified as etiologic agents in osteomyelitis. This case report describes a 16-month-old boy of Hispanic/African American ethnicity who had extensive inflammation of and discharge from his right ankle. Imaging studies supported a diagnosis of osteomyelitis. Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) and routine wound cultures were ordered on the woun…

Leprosy is a chronic infectious condition caused by Mycobacterium leprae(M. leprae). It is endemic in many regions of the world and a public health problem in Brazil. Additionally, it presents a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, which are dependent on the interaction between M. leprae and host, and are related to the degree of immunity to the bacillus. The diagnosis of this disease is a clinical one. However, in some situations laboratory exams are necessary to confirm the diagnosis of leprosy or classify its clinical form. This article aims to update dermatologists on leprosy, through…

CONTEXT: Anthrax is a rare disease cause by Bacillus anthracis, a Gram-positive, rod-shaped endospore-forming capsuled bacterium. Anthrax is manifest in three primary forms: cutaneous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal. Cutaneous anthrax accounts for approximately 95% of all cases of anthrax in humans.
OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we evaluated the clinical diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous anthrax, a rare disease that nonetheless remains a serious healthcare problem in developing countries.
METHODS: The complete medical records of patients diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax between Janu…

The RAZOR EX Anthrax Air Detection System, developed by Idaho Technology, Inc. (ITI), is a qualitative method for the detection of Bacillus anthracis spores collected by air collection devices. This system comprises a DNA extraction kit, a freeze-dried PCR reagent pouch, and the RAZOR EX real-time PCR instrument. Each pouch contains three assays, which distinguish potentially virulent B. anthracis from avirulent B. anthracis and other Bacillus species. These assays target the pXO1 and pXO2 plasmids and chromosomal DNA. When all targets are detected, the instrument makes an "anthrax detected" c…

Yersinia pestis is a powerful pathogen with a rare invasive capacity. After a flea bite, the plague bacillus can reach the bloodstream in a matter of days giving way to invade the whole organism reaching all organs and provoking disseminated hemorrhages. However, the mechanisms used by this bacterium to cross and disrupt the endothelial vascular barrier remain poorly understood. In this study, an innovative model of in vivo infection was used to focus on the interaction between Y. pestis and its host vascular system. In the draining lymph nodes and in secondary organs, bacteria provoked the po…

Bartonella infection (Bartonella henselae in particular) is responsible for a widening spectrum of human diseases. The persistent colonization of erythrocytes is a feature of Bartonella infection. Endothelial and epithelial cells are also widely used to study the pathogenesis of bartonellosis in vitro. Exploring a convenient method for visualizing the bacillus without affecting infectivity would be very interesting. Carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE) has been previously used for staining several bacterial species to study their adhesion to host cells. The present study demo…

Anthrax is a disease caused by Bacillus anthracis which affects herbivorous animals. Humans acquire the disease incidentally by exposure to infected animals, animal products or spores on soil. The infection is still endemic in many regions in developing countries. In Italy animal clusters are very rare and human cases are exceptional. Bacillus anthrax is also a potential source for acts of bioterrorism. In the natural human infection, cutaneous anthrax is the most widespread, while the other two, pulmonary and gastrointestinal anthrax, are very rare forms. We describe the first case of human a…

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (previously named Xanthomonas maltophilia) is an aerobic, nonfermentive, Gram-negative bacillus that is widespread in the environment. It is considered to be an organism with a limited pathogenic potential, which is rarely capable of causing diseases in humans other than in those who are in an immunocompromised state. In this study, we outline the case of a patient with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia bacteremia after living donor liver transplantation, which showed the clinical signs of severe sepsis and was resistant to almost all antibiotics. However, we successful…

IFN-regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) is known to participate in the transcriptional induction of chemokines and cytokines, including IFNs, as a result of viral or bacterial infection. In this study, we demonstrate that the LPS-mediated activation of IRF3 and subsequent induction of chemokine genes or IRF3-responsive reporter constructs are inhibited after exposure of human or murine macrophages to the Bacillus anthracis toxin lethal factor. The inhibitory effect is caused by interference with the activation of the stress-activated protein kinase, p38, due to a proteolytic cleavage of mitogen-activat…

The clinical picture of tuberculous otitis media has changed since previously documented. In our series of 31 patients, it was found that severe conductive hearing loss, abundant pale granulations, and denuded malleus handle are constant findings and, in our opinion, are significant clinical features of the pathology. The disease can also manifest itself as an acute mastoiditis. As regards to investigations, bacteriology is considered as being unreliable. This is attributed to secondary organisms interfering with the growth of the tubercle bacillus, as well as the fastidious nature of the baci…

HISTORY: Anthrax has been known since ancient times. Besides some references in the Old Testament, there is evidence of plagues in ancient Egypt, as well as descriptions of the disease by the Roman poet Virgil.
ETIOLOGY: Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, unmovable, aerobic, gram-positive rods. It forms spores, which can survive for years in the environment.
PATHOGENESIS: Capsular polypeptide and anthrax toxin are the principal virulence factors of Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax toxin consists of three proteins called protective antigen, edema factor, and lethal factor. It is thought that…
