Traditional surgical interventions for frontal sinus fractures necessitate a cut on the forehead skin, and extant closed reduction techniques aimed at enhancing accessibility continue to grapple with secure tool fixation, stable bone elevation, and screw breakage risk. To address these challenges and augment surgical efficiency, this study introduces novel surgical devices. Design parameters for models with spiral or L-shaped tips are established, considering practical medical requirements and constraints, and subsequently validated through finite element method numerical simulations using com

In orthopedic surgery, precise bone screw insertion is crucial for stabilizing fractures, necessitating a preliminary cortical bone drilling procedure. However, this process can induce temperatures exceeding 70 °C due to the low thermal conductivity of cortical bone, potentially leading to thermal osteonecrosis. Furthermore, significant cutting forces and torque pose risks of tool breakage and bone damage, underlining the need for high precision and optimal processing parameters. Traditionally, drilling relies on the surgeon's experience and often results in imprecise outcomes due to inconsist

Accidental rupture of the inflatable bone tamp is a rare but possible complication during balloon kyphoplasty. We describe an easy and minimal invasive technique to remove this foreign body from fractured vertebra. A 62-year-old female patient with severe osteoporosis had a low energy trauma and sustained burst fracture of the 12th thoracic (Th12) vertebra. The inflated bone tamp was not possible to be fully deflated and during the maneuvers to withdraw the balloon, it was disassembled and trapped under the distal end of working cannula, remaining within the bone cavity formed by balloon. Sinc

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports on the clinical, radiographic, and surgical management of thoracolumbar burst fractures attributed to high-energy trauma. Interestingly, few reports have described how to extract bone fragments associated with these injuries protruding into the spinal canal contributing to significant neurological deficits.
METHODS: An 18-year-old male presented with a severe L3-level paraparesis (i.e., loss of motor/sensory function below L3 lower extremity hyporeflexia, and sphincter dysfunction: American Spinal Injury Association [ASIA] Impairment Scale B) following

BACKGROUND: Distraction osteogenesis to correct deformity and limb-length discrepancy was defined by Ilizarov. Traditional distraction osteogenesis was made with circular external fixators or monolateral fixators commonly for deformity, and external fixators was related with pin site infections and pain due to soft-tissue transfixation. Nowadays, bone lengthening method is used with different intramedullary nail systems for cosmetic purposes.
METHODS: From 2011 until 2018, a total of 9 patients (6 males and 3 females:16 femoral, 2 tibial), with constitutional short stature, to whom the intram

This study investigated the effect of resveratrol on bone healing and its influence on the gene expression of osteogenic markers. Two calvarial defects were created and one screw-shaped titanium implant was inserted in the tibia of rats that were assigned to daily administration of placebo (control group, n=15) or 10mg/kg of resveratrol (RESV group, n=15) for 30 days. The animals were then sacrificed. One of the calvarial defects was processed for histomorphometric analysis and the tissue relative to the other was collected for mRNA quantification of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2, BMP-7,

The bone-anchored hearing aid (Baha) is today an important rehabilitation alternative for patients with mixed and conductive hearing loss and where air conduction devices should not or cannot be used. Some patients with single-sided deafness are also successfully treated with a Baha. Despite successful treatment of these patient groups, there is always a need for future improvements. First, it is well known that Baha are associated with some drawbacks related to skin infections, accidental or spontaneous loss of the bone implant, and patient refusal for treatment due to stigma. Therefore, in t

PURPOSE: The present study was designed to investigate the long-term bone response around machined screw-type uncoated and calcium phosphate (CaP) -coated commercially pure titanium implants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a magnetron sputtering technique, implants with a CaP coating similar in composition and CaP ratio to hydroxyapatite were produced. Heat treatment was subsequently used to increase the crystallinity of the coatings. Four types of coatings (0.1 and 2.0 microm amorphous and 0.1 and 2.0 microm crystalline) were manufactured; uncoated implants served as a control. Three hundred t

INTRODUCTION: The difficulties of managing bone loss in the distal tibia are well known in the literature. The various therapeutic options available to us include custom prosthetic replacement, talocrural arthrodesis with allograft, vascularised or non-vascularised autograft, bone transfer according to Illizarov and insertion of a metal augment. In the case of non-conservation of the talocrural joint, osteosynthesis is performed using adapted plates and screws or, more conventionally, transplanted centromedullary nailing. We report on a clinical case of bone loss in the distal tibia in an infe

BACKGROUND: Advanced Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy involving the hindfoot is associated with severe deformity, instability, ulceration, infection, and major lower-limb amputation. Non-traumatic calcaneal fracture associated with diabetic Charcot hindfoot collapse is uncommon and difficult to treat because of neuropathy, impaired bone quality, tendon imbalance, soft tissue compromise, and a high risk of fixation failure. Reports describing long-term functional limb preservation in patients with advanced Charcot hindfoot collapse associated with severe metabolic bone impairment remain limited.

Comminuted fractures, characterized by multiple irregular bone fragments, present significant challenges for traditional fixation methods like plates and screws, often resulting in complex surgeries and delayed healing. Injectable hydrogel adhesives have been applied for comminuted fractures, but face challenges such as excessive fluidity before curing and curing processes that involve high temperatures or ionic release, which can result in material leakage, localized inflammation and reduced adhesion. To address these challenges, we developed a humidity-responsive hydrogel adhesive system, co

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of the skeletal defects resulting from the resection of bone tumors remains a considerable challenge and one of the possibilities is the orthotopic replantation of the irradiated bone autograft. One technical option with this technique is the addition of a vital autologous fibular graft, with or without microvascular anastomosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical results of the treatment of our patient cohort with a specific view to the role of fibular augmentation.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with 22 reconstructions were included. In all cases, the

Mandibular reconstruction following oral and maxillofacial tumor resection is essential for restoring occlusion and facial appearance. Conventional methods require intraoperative bending of plates, increasing surgical time and risking metal fatigue and plate fracture. Patient-specific implants (PSIs), created via preoperative computed tomography (CT) data and three-dimensional (3D) metal printing, have improved surgical accuracy and reduced operation times. In Japan, Cosmofix® is the only PSI system available, but it lacks osteotomy guides, complicating precise bone cuts and screw insertion an

INTRODUCTION: Achilles' tendon is the largest tendon in the body, Tendon is an anatomical structure with inherent less blood supply and so more prone to injury and notorious healing outcomes. The management options for tendoachilles injury depend on the location of the tear, degree of retraction of the torn ends, and patient-related factors. Intraosseous lipoma is very rare benign tumor of bone accounting for 0.1% of all bone tumors. Most common site being proximal femur involvement of calcaneum is very rare presentation. Symptomatic patients with significant heel pain need operative intervent
