Associations of child sexual and physical abuse with obesity and depression in middle-aged women.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether (1) childhood maltreatment is associated with subsequent obesity and depression in middle-age; (2) maltreatment explains the associations between obesity and depression; and (3) binge eating or body dissatisfaction mediate associations between childhood maltreatment and subsequent obesity. METHODS: Data were obtained through a population-based survey of 4641 women (mean age=52 years) enrolled in a large health plan in the Pacific Northwest. A telephone survey assessed child sexual and physical abuse, obesity (BMI>or=30), depressive symptoms, binge eating, and body d

Naltrexone and cognitive behavioral coping skills therapy for the treatment of alcohol drinking and eating disorder features in alcohol-dependent women: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite important gender differences in drinking patterns, physiological effects of alcohol, and co-occurring psychiatric conditions, relatively little is known about the efficacy of naltrexone for the treatment of alcohol dependence in women. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of naltrexone in combination with Cognitive Behavioral Coping Skills Therapy (CBCST) in a sample of alcohol-dependent women, some with comorbid eating pathology. METHODS: One hundred three women meeting DSM-IV criteria for alcohol dependence (29 with comorbid eating disturbances) were randomize

Fibromyalgia, Eating Disorders and Rehabilitation: The Nrf2 Link.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) and eating disorders (ED) represent distinct clinical entities traditionally managed within separate medical specialties, yet emerging evidence suggests significant comorbidity and potential shared pathophysiological mechanisms. Both conditions disproportionately affect women, involve complex multifactorial etiologies and substantially impair quality of life. Despite documented clinical overlaps, the mechanistic connections linking these conditions remain poorly characterized, and integrated treatment approaches are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review exami

Resistance training is an underused and promising tool in eating disorder recovery: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with eating disorders may experience reduced bone mineral density and muscle mass, lower quality of life, and debilitating psychopathology. Abstinence from exercise has historically been recommended in the treatment of eating disorders. However, evidence shows that well-planned, supervised exercise can be safe and beneficial. Resistance training is an exercise modality of particular interest because of its ability to protect bone and muscle mass, in addition to its mental health and quality of life benefits. The purpose of this narrative review is to examine the use of

Acoustics Features of Voice in Adolescent Females With Anorexia Nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The process of human voice production is a complex physiological and acoustic phenomenon that depends on many structural, physical, and hormonal factors, systemic diseases as well as emotional states. All these factors can be present in eating disorders. However, studies on eating disorders and voice problems have usually been evaluated in terms of bulimia. Chronic starvation and emotional problems in the course of anorexia nervosa (AN) appear to be under-researched, despite various biochemical, metabolic, and hormonal changes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluat

Lifetime prevalence and clinical correlates of nonsuicidal self-injury in youth inpatients with eating disorders: a retrospective chart review.

BACKGROUND: Youths with eating disorders (EDs) engaging in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) are at higher suicide risk because EDs and NSSI are associated with suicidality. However, epidemiologic data on NSSI lacks in the vulnerable group of youth ED inpatients. METHODS: This retrospective chart review included patients up to 18 years of age with an ICD-10 diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, restricting type (AN-R), anorexia nervosa, binge-purge type (AN-BP), and bulimia nervosa (BN), treated at the child and adolescent inpatient department of the University Hospital in Berlin, Germany, between 1990

Acipimox Administration With Exercise Induces a Co-feedback Action of the GH, PP, and PYY on Ghrelin Associated With a Reduction of Peripheral Lipolysis in Bulimic and Healthy-Weight Czech Women: A Randomized Study.

Objective: Anti-lipolytic drugs and exercise are enhancers of growth hormone (GH) secretion. Decreased circulating free fatty acids (FFA) have been proposed to exert ghrelin-GH feedback loop after administration of an anti-lipolytic longer-acting analog of nicotinic acid, Acipimox (OLB, 5-Methylpyrazine-2-carboxylic acid 4-oxide, molecular weight of 154.1 Da). OLB administration strongly suppresses plasma FFA during exercise. Neuroendocrine perturbations of the adipose tissue (AT), gut, and brain peptides may be involved in the etiopathogenesis of eating disorders including bulimia nervosa (BN

The association between disordered eating and health-related quality of life among children and adolescents: A systematic review of population-based studies.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have documented that disordered eating is associated with a wide range of impaired physical and mental health conditions among children and adolescents. The relationship between disordered eating and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has been predominantly examined in children and adolescents who are overweight or obese or suffer from chronic illnesses. In the last decade, several studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between disordered eating and HRQOL among school and community children and adolescents. No systematic review or meta-anal

Weight stigma is uniquely tied to maladaptive eating across different racial, ethnic, and gender groups.

Weight stigma, racism, and sexism (social devaluation due to body weight, race or ethnicity, and sex or gender), have been linked to increased maladaptive eating behaviors; however, no research has investigated the unique associations between different forms of stigma and eating concurrently. We analyzed within-group (by race/ethnicity and sex) effects of different forms of stigma on maladaptive eating behaviors to test whether there is some unique relationship between weight stigma and maladaptive eating across identities. Additionally, we explored differences by racial/ethnic group and sex,

Does Age Impact the Clinical Presentation of Adult Women Seeking Specialty Eating Disorder Treatment?

Recent evidence suggests that eating disorders (EDs) are becoming increasingly common in older women. Previous research examining differences between younger and older women with EDs has been mixed, making it unclear whether older women with EDs represent a distinct group. We sought to determine whether there are age differences in the clinical presentation of women seeking specialty treatment for an ED. We examined the linear relationship between age and clinical constructs among adult women (N = 436) diagnosed with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, ED. Acr

An investigation of relationships between disordered eating behaviors, weight/shape overvaluation and mood in the general population.

Disordered eating behaviors and cognitions have been extensively examined in samples of individuals with eating disorders, as well as in non-clinical samples. However, such examinations are lacking in the general population. We investigated disordered eating behaviors and cognitions in a community representative sample of 6052 participants in South Australia, aged 15-99 years. Participants were interviewed regarding weight/shape overvaluation, strict dieting, binge eating, purging, low mood and body mass index (BMI). Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the direct effe

Ambient temperature and solar insolation are associated with decreased prevalence of SSRI-treated psychiatric disorders.

Serotonergic function is known to fluctuate in association with light and temperature. Serotonin-related behaviors and disorders similarly vary with climatic exposure, but the associations are complex. This complexity may reflect the importance of dose and timing of exposure, as well as acclimation. This cross-sectional study tests how average climate exposures (ambient temperature and solar insolation) vary with the prevalence of a group of SSRI-treated disorders. For comparison, we similarly studied a group of disorders not treated by SSRIs (i.e substance use disorders). Psychiatric prevalen

"I have to constantly prove to myself, to people, that I fit the bill": Perspectives on weight and shape control behaviors among low-income, ethnically diverse young transgender women.

The impact of societal femininity ideals on disordered eating behaviors in non-transgender women has been well described, but scant research has explored these processes among transgender women. The present study explored weight and shape control behaviors among low-income, ethnically diverse young transgender women at high risk for HIV or living with HIV in a Northeastern metropolitan area. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 participants (ages 18-31 years; mean annual income <$10,000; ethnic identity: Multiracial [n = 8], Black [n = 4], Latina [n = 4], White [n = 4], A

Associations of breastfeeding with bulimic behaviors and eating disorders among adolescents.

PURPOSE: To use the lifecourse framework to examine the association between duration of breastfeeding and risk of developing bulimic behaviors or a diagnosed eating disorder. METHOD: Questionnaires were sent every 12-24 months between 1996 and 2005 to 6,436 females and 5,756 males in the Growing Up Today Study, who were 9-14 years at baseline. Duration of breastfeeding was reported by the participants' mothers in 1997. We used generalized estimating equations to estimate the association of breastfeeding with purging, binge eating, engaging in bulimic behaviors, and having a diagnosed eating d

Eating disorder symptom severity scale: a new clinician rated measure.

This study describes the development and validation of the clinician-rated Eating Disorder Symptom Severity Scale (EDS(3)), created to address a gap in measurement options for youth with eating disorders. The EDS(3) is modeled on the Childhood Severity and Acuity of Psychiatric Illness Scales (Lyons, J. S, 1998). Factor analysis revealed a 5-factor solution and accounted for 78% of the variance, and internal consistency within the subscales was good (Cronbach alphas: 0.69 to 0.93). The EDS(3) is a valid and reliable measure designed for clinicians to help assess the severity of a youth's eatin
