To study whether magnesium (Mg) deficiency is present in patients with variant angina, 24-hour Mg retention of low dose Mg (0.2 mEq/kg lean body weight) administered intravenously over 4 hours in 20 patients with variant angina was examined. No patient had received calcium antagonists before or during the study. All had attacks of chest pain associated with ST elevation on electrocardiograms. Twenty-one subjects without ischemic heart disease were studied as control subjects. Terodiline combines simultaneously a parasympatholytic and a calcium antagonistic effect and can be used positively for the treatment of urge-incontinence of women. 44 female patients with an urge-incontinence have been examined urodynamically before and after a six-week treatment with terodiline. After therapy the urodynamic parameters ameliorated significantly. A subjective amelioration or even a healing of the urge symptomatic occurred in 86.4% of the patients. The side effects were minor.

The effect of calcium antagonists in experimental tympanosclerosis following infection with Streptococcus pyogenes and vitamin D3 intoxication has been analyzed in a rat animal model. Compared with untreated animals, calcium antagonists exert a positive effect on the degenerative process and on secondary calcification in the subepithelial layer. This effect could be substantiated planimetrically.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure was developed for the determination of diltiazem and desacetyldiltiazem in dog plasma. Two milliliters of plasma is extracted with a hexane-2-propanol mixture. The assay uses a reverse-phase column maintained at 55 degrees C with a silica saturation column and a pellicular precolumn. The mobile phase is acetonitrile-water (50:50) at pH 6.6 with 1.5-g/L heptanesulfonic acid added as the ion-pair reagent. Organic Ca antagonists such as D600, diltiazem and nicardipine enhanced the irreversible blockade by phenoxybenzamine (POB) of the histamine response in guinea pig taenia caecum. The isotonic contractile response of the muscle was tested after incubation with POB (5 X 10(-6) M, 10 min) with or without an organic Ca antagonist. The blockade by POB was greater in muscle treated with an organic Ca antagonist and the effect lasted for more than 7 h.
