Arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR) was used to characterize Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. Cells from a single colony could be subtyped by AP-PCR within a few hours. The discrimination between strains of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 by AP-PCR was equivalent to that by monoclonal antibody analysis and ribotyping. Four strains representing the monoclonal antibody pattern most frequently associated with outbreaks all yielded unique amplicon patterns by AP-PCR.

Histoplasmosis is a deep mycosis which occurs in America and Africa. It is extremely rare in France. The case presented involves a male subject who had spent time in the French colonies of Africa and in Brazil. He presented with undiagnosed ulceration of the cheek, similar to that seen with cancer. Diagnosis was made on histology on one hand and on mycological examination on the other. This case serves to remind us that tropical and sub-tropical pathology may be encountered in temperate zones due to population migration.

Naturally occurring, oval opacities at the junction of the middle and inferior thirds of the cornea were found in an experimental beagle dog colony and were examined by light and electron microscopy. Abnormalities were limited to the anterior stroma and consisted of extracellular rhomboid crystalline spaces. Spherical or elliptical vacuolar spaces, sometimes containing electron-dense amorphous debris, distorted stromal lamellae. Stromal keratocytes in affected areas revealed a range of changes from hyperplasia of organelles to degeneration and necrosis.

Psorergates (Psorobia) sp were recovered from dermal cysts on the face, chest, and abdomen of three stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) in a breeding colony of research animals. The lesions were multiple and appeared as white, crusted structures measuring 2 to 10 mm in diameter. These lesions were not associated with pruritus or other clinical symptoms. The mites were embedded in the epidermis and associated with mild hyperkeratosis. A few mononuclear leukocytes were present in the dermal and subcutaneous tissues.
