A cross-sectional survey was carried out to study the dynamics of contraceptive use in three villages of Raipur Rani block in district Panchkula, Haryana. A female social worker interviewed 600 ever-married women aged 15-44 years using a semi-structured interview schedule. More than 75% of the respondents were aware about modern contraceptives. INTRODUCTION: Non-communicating hydrocephalus is defined as a blockade of the physiological cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow from the choroid plexus to the subarachnoid space. Usually, a ventricle peritoneal shunt with a valve is employed as treatment but this does not provide a physiological restoration on the CSF flow.

The use of washing machines was investigated in two remote Aboriginal communities in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara homelands. The aim was to look both at machine reliability and to investigate the health aspect of washing clothes. A total of 39 machines were inspected for wear and component reliability every three months over a one-year period. The purpose of this study was to obtain preliminary data on pathological gambling rates within a metropolitan Chinese community to determine if more costly extensive epidemiological surveys were justified. Two thousand survey questionnaires were distributed to parents through children attending a local Chinese speaking school. A response rate of 27.4% was obtained. The main role of the crisis unit at a state psychiatric hospital was found to be the provision of brief hospitalisation for patients with adjustment disorders and personality disorders. The four bed crisis unit treated 14% of all patients admitted to the hospital, with an average length of stay less than three days. A study of 78 crisis unit patients found that 77% were able to be discharged directly to the community, and only 18% were readmitted during the following six months.

The Home Hospitalization Programme was initiated in Jerusalem in 1991 to provide intensive medical care at home in order to prevent or shorten hospitalizations. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of snoring and assess the extent of associated ENT symptoms in children up to 10 years of age. A questionnaire was presented to the parents of 245 children chosen at random from the General Practice list of the town of Frome, Somerset, UK. The prevalence of snoring was found to be 27%. A 7-month-old infant presented at a tertiary centre with a 6-day history of a skin rash, fever and diarrhoea. Clinical features included pyrexia, kwashiorkor, extensive ulcerating skin lesions suggestive of ecthyma gangrenosum, hepatomegaly, meningismus, neutropenia and iron deficiency anaemia. Blood and skin aspirate cultures yielded a positive growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Apart from severe protein energy malnutrition, no other causes of immunodeficiency were found. He responded well to parenteral antibiotic therapy with gentamicin and piperacillin.
