The transfection-induced overexpression of IGF-binding protein-4 affects the secretory activity of porcine ovarian granulosa cells and their response to hormones and IGF-I.

The aim of our studies was to examine whether IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-4 is involved in the control of the secretion of various ovarian substances and also the mediation of the effects of several hormones and growth factors on this secretion. For this purpose, we carried out the transfection of porcine granulosa cells with a cDNA sense construct, increasing IGFBP-4 synthesis. We then compared the release of IGFBP-3, progesterone, oxytocin and IGF-I by control and transfected cells cultured with and without porcine LH (100 ng/ml), porcine GH (100 ng/ml), IGF-I (10 ng/ml), oxytocin (10 ng/ml)

Anterior segment changes in rabbits after experimental aqueous replacement with various amounts of different perfluorocarbon liquids.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated biomicroscopic and histological effects on the anterior segment in the rabbit eye after temporary aqueous substitution with various amounts (0.2 cc and 0.025 cc) of perfluorodecaline (PFD) and perfluorophenanthrene (PFP). METHODS: A quantity of 0.2 cc of the two perfluorocarbon (PFC) liquids was exchanged simultaneously with about 50% of the aqueous in 15 rabbit eyes each for periods of 1, 2, or 4 weeks. At these points some eyes were enucleated for histological examination. After 2 and 4 weeks the substances were removed from the remaining eyes, which were then follo

Processing narratives of self-destructive behavior in routine medical encounters: health promotion, disease prevention, and the discourse of health care.

This study asked how patients and doctors process self-destructive behaviors that warrant preventive action, such as smoking, substance use, and sexual practices. Although many suggestions have appeared about how physicians should encourage health promotion and disease prevention by counseling patients about self-destructive personal habits, few studies have examined actual encounters to assess how patients and doctors communicate about these matters, and prior research rarely has considered the social context of self-destructive habits. The present research has been influenced by a growing re

Midfrontal Theta Activity in Psychiatric Illness: An Index of Cognitive Vulnerabilities Across Disorders.

There is an urgent need to identify the mechanisms that contribute to atypical thinking and behavior associated with psychiatric illness. Behavioral and brain measures of cognitive control are associated with a variety of psychiatric disorders and conditions as well as daily life functioning. Recognition of the importance of cognitive control in human behavior has led to intensive research into behavioral and neurobiological correlates. Oscillations in the theta band (4-8 Hz) over medial frontal recording sites are becoming increasingly established as a direct neural index of certain aspects o

Cerebrovascular effects of substance P after experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage.

The vasoactive effects of substance P (SP), as well as the content of cyclic guanine monophosphate (cGMP), were determined in the rabbit basilar artery after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Out of 47 rabbits, 24 were subjected to a SAH, induced by injecting 5 ml of autologous arterial blood into the cisterna magna; 23 were used as controls. In 20 animals (10 SAH and 10 controls), isometric tension recording of isolated rings of the basilar artery--dissected 2 days after SAH--was employed to assess the dose-dependent vasodilatation to SP (10(-10) to 10(-6) M) after precontraction with serotonin

Association of Current Opioid Use With Serious Adverse Events Among Older Adult Survivors of Breast Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: National efforts to improve safe opioid prescribing focus on preventing misuse, overdose, and opioid use disorder. This approach overlooks opportunities to better prevent other serious opioid-related harms in complex populations, such as older adult survivors of cancer. Little is known about the rates and risk factors for comprehensive opioid-related harms in this population. OBJECTIVE: To determine rates of multiple opioid-related adverse drug events among older adults who survived breast cancer and estimate the risk of these events associated with opioid use in the year after co

ING Proteins and Neural Development in Newborns from Alcohol- and/or Drug-Abusing Pregnant Women.

Maternal consumption of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy can compromise neural development with long-lasting impact on individuals' health. The inhibitor of growth (ING) family of proteins is an epigenetic regulator that plays a central role in fetal brain development, contributing to neural stem cell maintenance, neuronal differentiation, and the regulation of genes involved in brain morphogenesis. Given the susceptibility of the developing nervous system to epigenetic dysregulation induced by alcohol and drugs, this narrative study aims to summarize literature evidence with the hypothesis

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances exposure and risk of gastrointestinal cancers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a group of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in industrial and consumer applications. These substances are known or suspected to cause cancer, particularly kidney and testicular cancer. However, their association with other types of cancer is not well understood. This review aims to investigate the link between PFAS exposure and the risks of other cancers, including gastrointestinal cancers such as esophageal, gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of literature from the Internat

Implementation of a community-based LC-UV drug checking service: promising preliminary findings on feasibility and validity.

BACKGROUND: The increasing diversity of psychoactive substances on the unregulated drug market poses significant health, psychological, and social risks to people who use drugs (PWUD). To address these risks, various harm reduction (HR) policies have been implemented, including drug checking services (DCS). Many analytical methods are used for DCS. While qualitative methods (e.g., thin layer chromatography, spectroscopy) are easier to implement, they are not as accurate as quantitative methods (e.g., LC-UV, LC-MS). Some HR programmes have implemented high-performance liquid chromatography coup

Alexithymia in Young Adults With Substance Use Disorders: Critical Issues About Specificity and Treatment Predictivity.

Several studies have reported high rates of alexithymia in drug-dependent individuals, but supporting evidence attests association between alexithymia and a variety of psychiatric disorders, raising doubts about its specificity. Moreover, controversies are emerging about alexithymia assessment: self-report measures present shortcomings with respect to discriminant validity and reliability. As regards treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs), alexithymia has been linked to poorer outcomes, but the results are inconsistent. The aim of the present study is to investigate alexithymia in substa

Peptide-immunoreactive neurons and nerve fibres in lumbosacral sympathetic ganglia: selective elimination of a pathway-specific expression of immunoreactivities following sciatic nerve resection in kittens.

The distributions of peptide-immunoreactive nerve fibres and cell bodies in lumbosacral paravertebral sympathetic ganglia of young cats were analysed with antibodies to calcitonin gene-related peptide, enkephalin, neurotensin, somatostatin, substance P, galanin, neuropeptide Y and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. Fairly dense networks of nerve fibres showing enkephalin-, neurotensin-, somatostatin- or substance P-like immunoreactivity were observed in the ganglia. Double-staining experiments revealed that enkephalin- and somatostatin-immunoreactive nerve fibres preferentially surrounded calc

Clinical profile of compulsive sexual behaviour and paraphilia in Parkinson's disease.

This case control study compares the clinical and demographic profile of Parkinson's disease (PD) participants with compulsive sexual behaviour (CSB) to those with other impulse control disorders (ICDs) and those with no behavioural disorder. We found a higher dopaminergic load (p < 0.05) and higher levels of anxiety (p < 0.01) in the CSB group compared to the PD control group. On the NEO-FFI, a measure of personality style, the CSB group was significantly 'more open to new experiences' (p < 0.05) and significantly 'less agreeable' (p < 0.01) compared with the other two groups. Results suggest

Evaluating the Association Between Marijuana and Tobacco Use and the Risk of Developing Atrial Fibrillation.

Background Marijuana and tobacco use have become increasingly prevalent, raising concerns regarding their cardiovascular effects. Atrial fibrillation (AF), a common cardiac arrhythmia associated with increased morbidity and mortality, has been linked to substance use. Nicotine in tobacco products increases sympathetic activity, heart rate, and blood pressure, predisposing individuals to arrhythmias. Similarly, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of marijuana, has been associated with cardiac ion channel modulation and QT interval prolongation, although this continues

A Pilot Replication Study of Implementing an Equine-Assisted Services Program Within a VA Residential Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans have high rates of substance use disorders and other mental health conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder. Effective treatments for these conditions exist; however, high attrition rates and residual symptoms after completing treatment are common. Complementary treatment approaches could enhance treatment engagement and/or response among this population. We previously reported a study of one such intervention, an equine-assisted learning, and psychotherapy incorporating horses intervention provided to veterans admitted to a Veterans Health Care Administration

A High-Sugar Diet Consumption, Metabolism and Health Impacts with a Focus on the Development of Substance Use Disorder: A Narrative Review.

Carbohydrates are important macronutrients in human and rodent diet patterns that play a key role in crucial metabolic pathways and provide the necessary energy for proper body functioning. Sugar homeostasis and intake require complex hormonal and nervous control to proper body energy balance. Added sugar in processed food results in metabolic, cardiovascular, and nervous disorders. Epidemiological reports have shown enhanced consumption of sweet products in children and adults, especially in reproductive age and in pregnant women, which can lead to the susceptibility of offspring's health to
