Arterial tortuosity syndrome is a rare connective tissue disorder characterized by elongation and tortuosity of large elastic arteries resulting in multiple vascular stenoses. This article reports on a novel hybrid transcatheter-surgical strategy to treat bilateral peripheral pulmonary artery stenoses due to this syndrome. Operation consisted of stent implantation by midline sternotomy and reductive reconstruction of the proximal pulmonary arteries. This approach resulted in right ventricular overload relief and sudden improvement of the patient's clinical condition.

We report two cases of large lipomas arising from the proximal thigh with an extremely uncommon shape. The tumors were elastic soft and movable. MRI examination revealed both tumors with high signal intensity as fatty tissue on both T1 and T2-weighted images. Needle biopsy of the specimens revealed lipoma. Marginal excision was carried out for both cases because of the patients' discomfort. No recurrence was found three and five years after surgery, respectively.

The outflow of viscous incompressible fluid from catheter holes into a small gap between the catheter and surrounding elastic tube is considered. Initially, the catheter is inserted into the tube lumen in such a manner that a considerable tube wall prestress exists. An additional longitudinally non-uniform external load is applied to the outer tube surface. The procedure of measuring the urethral "pressure profile" is discussed. It is shown that there is no easy way for extracting the external load (muscle forces in reality) from the measured pressure.

The mechanical characteristics of the ventilated lung can only be interpreted when the volume of the lung, the elastic properties, and the degree of airway obstruction have been accurately quantified by pulmonary function testing. More gentle ventilation strategies (permissive hypercapnia) are used, and the efficacy of mechanical ventilation can be verified in the intensive care unit. Pulmonary function testing brings new insights, awareness, and applications, but its limitations need to be taken into account when interpreting the acquired data.

A syndrome is described in three isolated patients in whom the main features are bilateral radial aplasia, short stature, an inflammatory based 'elastic' pyloric stenosis, a pan-enteric inflammatory gut disorder that appears to be due to an autoimmune process, and poikiloderma. Other features in individual cases include cleft palate, micrognathia, anal atresia, patellar aplasia/hypoplasia and sensorineural deafness. This combination may represent a severe form of Rothmund-Thomson syndrome or possibly a previously unrecognized condition.

A superelastic guide wire was used (after failure of other methods) as a loop snare to retrieve a foreign body from the ureter in three patients. In vitro comparison of the expansion capability of the superelastic guide wire and that of the standard retrieval wire showed that the superelastic wire forms larger loops within an elastic space. Also, because of less frictional resistance and its ability to be formed into stiffer loops, the superelastic wire resists kinking and is easier to manipulate than the standard wire.

Dermatologic literature has debated the occurrence of concomitant morphea-scleroderma (M-S) and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) for sometime. Presentation of a case which has the appearance of both M-S and LSA creates a diagnostic dilemma frequently unresolved even by histopathology. Routine hematoxylin and eosin stained sections may add to the confusion and the difficulty of the differentiation, but examination for the presence or absence of elastic fibers in the upper corium of the lesions affords a definitive separation of these two conditions.

The eyes of an 89-year-old male were obtained for postmortem examination five months after implantation of a foldable silicone elastic lens implant. Two months after surgery, the implant had been repositioned from capsular bag to ciliary sulcus fixation to correct postoperative decentration and tilt. Pathological examination showed both haptics located in the ciliary sulcus. There was no significant inflammatory reaction in the adjacent uveal tissue and no erosion of the haptics into the iris or ciliary body.

Two unusual ovarian tumours thought to be of Wolffian identity, one of them malignant, are described. They showed packed combinations of adenopapillary, tubular, trabecular and diffuse patterns, a sharp and generalised periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive basement membrane and areas of elastic network. A review of published Wolffian tumours at various sites suggests that the prototypes of the two tumours occur chiefly in the cervix and broad ligament. The significance of Wolffian tumours and their differentiation from arrhenoblastoma and serous tumours is discussed.

PURPOSE: To compare linear and convex probe shear wave elastography (SWE) for the diagnosis of chronic rejection in renal transplant recipients.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 84 patients (42 with stable and 42 with unstable graft function) underwent SWE examinations using linear and convex probes. Elasticity values, resistive index (RI), and laboratory parameters (creatinine, eGFR, and proteinuria) were analyzed.
