BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for bone mineral density (BMD) accumulation. However, the relationship between body morphology, handgrip strength (HGS), and BMD, as well as the mediating mechanisms involved, remains unclear among Chinese college students.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct an in-depth analysis of the mediating effect of skeletal muscle (the measured variable is skeletal muscle mass) on the relationship between body morphology, HGS, and BMD in Chinese college students, and to reveal the underlying mechanisms influencing human BMD.
METHODS: A random cluster sampling method was

To describe the handgrip strength, lifestyle patterns (i.e., physical activity), and body composition of Chilean adult divers of different blood pressure status. Secondly, to associate body fat (BF), fat-free mass (FFM), and bone mineral content (BMC) with blood pressure. A cross-sectional study was conducted in adult divers men. Participants were categorized into; hypertensive (HTN, n = 41), high blood pressure (HBP, n = 19), or normotensive (NT, n = 35). Primary outcomes were blood pressure, Total and segmental BF %, FFM, and BMC assessed by dual-X absorptiometry. Secondary outcomes comprise

Previous studies suggest social support is associated with musculoskeletal health in later life. We explored this relationship further in community-dwelling older adults, by considering associations between different aspects of social support and musculoskeletal health in community-dwelling adults. Participants from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study reported level of confiding/emotional, practical, and negative support using the Close Persons Questionnaire. Muscle strength was measured by grip strength dynamometry, and physical capability by timed up-and-go, chair rises, and walking speed tests.

INTRODUCTION: Although a lack of gravitational stimuli decreases bone mineral content in some populations, such as astronauts' bone mineral content (BMC), little is known about the association of BMC with handgrip muscle strength (HGS) in divers of different years of diving experience.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the BMC and body composition of diver workers of different years of diving experience. A second objective was to associate the level of BMC with HGS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive and longitudinal pilot study was carried out in adult men divers of different years of diving experi

BACKGROUND: Trapeziectomy with suspension arthroplasty is a reliable treatment for thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis. We modified the suture suspension technique to add further support to maintain the arthroplasty space by interposition of the dermal allograft. Our aim was to investigate the surgical outcomes of our technique of suspension arthroplasty with dermal allograft interposition (SADI) compared with those of traditional ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition (LRTI) using a half-sling of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon.
METHODS: This retrospective study enro

INTRODUCTION: After surgical fixation of distal radius fractures, many patients are keen to return to driving. There are however limited guidelines assisting surgeons. The aims of this study were to determine when patients could return to driving safely after distal radius fracture fixation and determine the clinical parameters (range of motion and grip strength) that patients needed to achieve before return to safe driving could be advised.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective grant-funded clinical study was conducted. Patients above the age of 21 years who underwent surgical fixation with a

PURPOSE: In treatment of mallet finger fractures (MFFs), the aim is to minimize residual extension lag, reduce subluxation, and restore congruency of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. Failure to do so may increase the risk of secondary osteoarthritis (OA). However, long-term follow-up studies focusing on OA of the DIP joint after an MFF are scarce. The purpose of this study was to assess OA, functional outcomes, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after an MFF.
METHODS: A cohort study was performed with 52 patients who sustained an MFF at a mean of 12.1 years (range, 9.9-15.5

The Wrist and Radius Injury Surgical Trial (WRIST) collaboration is the largest clinical trial ever conducted in hand surgery. We applied data from this study to examine the relationship between functional outcomes and patient satisfaction after treatment of distal radial fractures. Patients aged 60 years and older with isolated distal radial fractures were enrolled at 24 health systems. Grip strength and the arc of wrist motion were measured after treatment. The Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire was used to measure patient satisfaction. Receiver operating characteristic curves were created

BACKGROUND: Hirayama disease (HD) is a rare disease traditionally treated with nonsurgical procedures. Surgical treatment, which is performed by decompression and/or fusion of the cervical spine, is generally considered for rapidly progressive or advanced cases, and the choice of surgical technique is debatable. We describe the first severe case of HD that was successfully treated by posterior lateral mass screw fixation without decompression or fusion.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 17-year-old adolescent boy who presented with progressive symptoms bilaterally with an unsatisfactory his

Low dietary intake of calcium and poor vitamin D status during aging can result in mild secondary hyperparathyroidism, which may be associated with low muscle mass and reduced strength in the elderly. The aim of this study was to investigate whether low vitamin D, high parathormone (PTH), or both, are associated with sarcopenia. A total of 105 women, 35 with sarcopenia and 70 without sarcopenia, were enrolled in the present study. Body composition measurements were performed by DXA and sarcopenia was defined as skeletal muscle mass index<5.45 kg/m2 and grip strength lower than 20 kg. Three-day

PURPOSE: To investigate the presence or absence of union of the new trapezium to the retained metacarpal base after pollicization and to relate this to stability of the new trapezium and the new carpometacarpal joint.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients (46 pollicizations) were assessed at clinical review. Mean time from surgery to review was 96 months (range, 9-260 mo). Clinical assessment measured range of motion (ROM) at the carpometacarpal joint, stability of the carpometacarpal joint, and extrinsic and intrinsic strength of both hands. Radiological review evaluated 3 parameters: bony union betw

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of inherited, mechanobullous disorders caused by mutations in various structural proteins in the skin. The manifestation of these disorders in the hand is of digital contractures and pseudosyndactyly or "cocoon hands," causing significant functional impairment. Our preferred surgical treatment of these patients involves separation of the digits from the palm by releasing the finger flexion contractures and separating them, primarily the adducted thumb. However, recurrence is common. Our hypothesis was that functional improvement is gained irresp

UNLABELLED: The distal phalanx in Kirner's disease is abnormal and recognizable both clinically and radiologically. Despite previous investigation, the cause of these abnormalities is not clear. The current study seeks to evaluate the abnormal physis in Kirner's deformity using radiological investigation, intraoperative observation and histopathological assessment in three clinical cases. Similarities with clinodactyly are described. Three patients with Kirner's deformity underwent plain-film radiography and magnetic resonance imaging. Intraoperative observations were recorded, and histologic

We describe an alternative method for treating chronic trapeziometacarpal (TM) joint instability after acute injury or chronic repetitive use of the thumb by performing a dorsoradial capsulodesis procedure. The procedure is done by imbricating the redundant TM joint dorsoradial ligament and capsule after reducing the joint by pronating the thumb. The dorsoradial capsulodesis is a reasonable reconstructive option for chronic TM joint instability and subluxation.

Since its introduction more than three decades ago, wrist arthroscopy has continually evolved. The procedure has a wide list of indications, including diagnostic and management applications. The scope of practice for the wrist arthroscopic surgeon includes management of triangulofibrocartilage complex pathology, evaluation and management of carpal instability, assistance in fracture reduction of the radius and scaphoid, treatment of trapeziometacarpal synovitis and arthritis, distal ulnar and carpal bone excisions, and salvage procedures. In addition, innovations such as new portals and smalle

Terminal osseous dysplasia with pigmentary defects (TODPD) is an X-linked dominant syndrome with distal limb anomalies and pigmentary skin defects. We have previously described this syndrome in several females from a large, four-generation pedigree. The presentation in the affected patients included multiple anomalies, hypertelorism, iris colobomas, punched-out pigmentary abnormalities over the face and scalp, brachydactyly, and digital fibromatosis. The phenotype was highly variable thus suggesting that X-inactivation plays an important role in the expression of the disease. Following our ini

We report the incidence of acute sporting injuries to the hand and wrist in the general population that required management in the Orthopaedic department. During a four month period, we prospectively identified all sports related injuries, which were referred for continued management in the Orthopaedic department. Eight hundred and fifty-one sports injuries were identified. Of them 400 (47%) were to the hand and wrist. There were 304 (76%) males and 96 (24%) females with an average age of 24.6 years and 26.5 years respectively. Injuries comprised of 286 (71%) fractures, 88 (22%) soft tissue in

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2005eng
Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease affecting 44 million Americans. A primary strategy to prevent osteoporosis is to develop a high peak bone mass in youth. Oral contraceptives (OCs) alter hormones in women and could affect bone mass development. Fifty percent of American women between the ages of 20 and 24 years use OCs. However, the interaction between OCs and skeletal mineralization is poorly understood. Our aim was to compare bone mass [bone mineral density (BMD)] of young women who had a history of OC use, with regularly menstruating controls. We recruited 98 women who were 18 to 25 years
