Association of premarital medical check-ups and folic acid knowledge, attitudes, and practices with the occurrence of neural tube defects in Guangxi, China (2009-2023).

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are severe congenital malformations that cause significant foetal mortality and lifelong disability. Preconception folic acid supplementation has been proven effective in reducing the risk of NTDs. In 2009, China launched a national folic acid supplementation programme, which was further strengthened in Guangxi, China, by the implementation of a free premarital medical check-up policy in 2010. In this study, we analysed NTDs incidence trends in Guangxi (2009-2023) to evaluate the impact of these integrated interventions. METHODS: We conducted a descripti

A KAP model-based retrospective study on the association between fertility stress and marital adjustment in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology.

Patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) often experience considerable fertility-related stress, which may adversely affect their marital adjustment. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (KAP) model provides a theoretical framework for understanding patient cognition and behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between fertility-related stress and marital adjustment, as well as its influencing factors. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 200 ART patients, divided into a high-stress group (n = 100) and a low-stress group (n = 100) based on the median fertili

Does your patient education material for low back pain meet patients' information and education needs? Preliminary development of a new checklist.

INTRODUCTION: Patients lack knowledge and have unhelpful beliefs about low back pain, which are associated with worse outcomes. Education may improve knowledge and modify beliefs and is recommended as a first-line low back pain treatment. However, low back pain guidelines are vague in their education recommendations and patients report rarely receiving education in from their family doctor. Those receiving education often report unclear and inconsistent information across resources that do not address their needs. Patient education materials can be used to facilitate the provision of credible,

Exploring and enhancing community awareness on antimicrobial resistance: perspectives from world antimicrobial resistance awareness week celebration in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating health crisis, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where limited healthcare infrastructure and weak regulations contribute to the misuse of antibiotics. Many people unknowingly fuel this resistance by misusing antibiotics, whether for common colds or other viral (non-bacterial) infections. To address this challenge, we conducted a study to understand how communities perceive antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and their use of antibiotics. METHODS: As part of the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) in Ghana, we conducted

Allergen safety among Brazilian restaurant food business operators: guilt, rather than regret or shame, links cognitive responsibility to intentions.

Consumers with food allergies and intolerances face significant risks when eating out, especially in countries lacking specific legislation on allergen communication. In such contexts, they depend heavily on the information and practices adopted by food business operators (FBOs). This study investigated key aspects of allergen management among FBOs, focusing on (i) knowledge and decision-making in situations involving allergic reactions; (ii) cognitive, moral, and emotional determinants influencing the management of allergenic foods; and (iii) potential allergen contamination in food preparati

HIV self-testing awareness among African refugee male sex workers in Italy: A mixed-methods study.

HIV disproportionately affects African refugee male sex workers (ARMSWs) in Italy, who face individual, structural and systemic barriers to HIV prevention and care services. HIV self-testing (HIVST) offers a promising strategy to improve testing access, yet awareness remains understudied in this population. This study examines HIVST awareness and associated factors among ARMSWs to inform targeted interventions. A mixed-methods sequential exploratory design was employed, combining quantitative surveys (n = 150) with qualitative interviews (20 in-depth interviews, 2 focus group discussions) amon

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions Towards Male Circumcision Among Men Aged 20-40 Years in Otjiwarongo, Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia.

Male circumcision (MC) has been shown in studies from South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda to reduce heterosexual Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) transmission among men by approximately 50-60%. Despite Namibia's adoption of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as part of national HIV prevention strategies, uptake remains suboptimal in some communities. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) of male circumcision among men aged 20-40 years in Otjiwarongo, Namibia, and examined socio-demographic factors associated with these outcomes. A community-based cross-secti
