Flexible and Highly Sensitive Strain Sensor Based on Laser-Induced Graphene Pattern Fabricated by 355 nm Pulsed Laser.

A laser-induced-graphene (LIG) pattern fabricated using a 355 nm pulsed laser was applied to a strain sensor. Structural analysis and functional evaluation of the LIG strain sensor were performed by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, and electrical-mechanical coupled testing. The electrical characteristics of the sensor with respect to laser fluence and focal length were evaluated. The sensor responded sensitively to small deformations, had a high gauge factor of ~160, and underwent mechanical fracture at 30% tensile strain. In addition, we have applied the LIG sen

[Current basic understanding and clinical application of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells].

Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) exhibit various biological characteristics, including immunomodulation, tissue regeneration, anti-inflammation, and hematopoietic support. Extensive efforts have been made toward the development of cell therapy using MSCs to treat various diseases. In Japan, off-the-shelf allogeneic human bone marrow-derived MSC products from third-party donors are clinically available for treating patients with steroid-resistant/refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). In this manuscript, we present an overview of the current status of clinical development of MS

Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders in Patients with and without Chronic Kidney Disease: An Update.

Kidneys play a pivotal role in the maintenance and regulation of acid-base and electrolyte homeostasis, which is the prerequisite for numerous metabolic processes and organ functions in the human body. Chronic kidney diseases compromise the regulatory functions, resulting in alterations in electrolyte and acid-base balance that can be life-threatening. In this review, we discuss the renal regulations of electrolyte and acid-base balance and several common disorders including metabolic acidosis, alkalosis, dysnatremia, dyskalemia, and dysmagnesemia. Common disorders in chronic kidney disease ar

Interstitial cells of Cajal and telocytes in the urinary system: facts and distribution.

Current knowledge confirms the existence of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) and telocytes in the urinary system (kidneys, ureter and urinary bladder). Therefore, summarizing of available data can be helpful in understanding of pathophysiology of urological disorders. Telocytes (TCs) are a newly discovered type of cell with numerous functions, described in vertebrates (fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, including human). Despite unique characteristics, they have own differences in morphology and properties in urinary bladder and other organs of the urinary system. This review summarizes particu

Epididymal protein markers and fertility.

The last stages of male gamete differentiation occur outside the gonad in a specific environment controlled by the epididymal epithelium. All the fundamental characteristics of a fertile spermatozoon are acquired sequentially during transit through the epididymal tubule. Full understanding of the mechanisms involved in these gamete modifications is a key to understanding and controlling such important stages in male fertility. With the development of new large scale technologies, large amounts of information give hope of identifying the fundamental elements involved in such cellular events and

Atypical Arteritis in Internal Carotid Arteries: A Novel Concept of Isolated Internal Carotid Arteritis.

We presented a 38-year-old woman suffering from acute cerebral infarction due to arteritis limited to bilateral internal carotid arteries without a condition of giant cell arteritis or granulomatosis with polyangitis. Our case is unprecedented and characterized by a young woman with wall enhancement in the internal carotid arteries on contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), therapeutic effects of steroids, and positive status for human leucocyte antigen-B39, -B51 and -DR4. These disease characteristics were not in accordance with existing diagnostic criteria of vasculitis, such as

Integrating adolescent substance abuse treatment with HIV services: evidence-based models and baseline descriptions.

Adolescents with substance use disorders are at high risk for contracting Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Adolescence is the period of sexual maturation that compounds the issues associated with infection transmission for this risk-taking group. Integrated treatment models for implementing HIV education, counseling, and testing is a promising approach. This study describes four substance abuse treatment programs of varying levels of care that integrated HIV services for adolescents. Additionally, the

Adenocarcinoma arising from vaginal stump: unusual vaginal carcinogenesis 7 years after hysterectomy due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Primary vaginal adenocarcinomas are one of the rarest malignant neoplasms, which develop in the female genital tract. Because of the extremely low incidence, their clinical and pathologic characteristics are still obscure. Recently, we experienced a case of vaginal adenocarcinoma that appeared 7 yr after hysterectomy because of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. The patient, a 65-yr-old obese woman, was diagnosed as having adenocarcinoma in the vaginal stump and was treated by simple tumor excision and radiation. Immunohistochemical and molecular biologic examinations indicated a potential as

[Recent advance in phlebovirus].

Genus Phlebovirus is single negative-strand RNA virus, and belongs to family bunyaviridae. Its genomes have three segments including L, M and S encoding RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, envelope glycoprotein and nucleoprotein respectively. Phlebovirus is arbovirus and can be disseminated by arthropod. More than 70 types of Phlebovirus so far have been reported, and 68 known serotypes are divided into groups Sandfly fever and Uukuniemi, of which a few members are closely related to human diseases. In addition, new emerging viruses of genus Phlebovirus are discovered recently. In this review, the l

Recent developments in Blastocystis research.

Blastocystis is a common parasite of the human large intestine but has an uncertain role in disease. In this review, we appraise the published evidence addressing this and its weaknesses. Genetic diversity studies have led to the identification of numerous subtypes (STs) within the genus Blastocystis and, recently, methods for studying variation within STs have been developed, with implications for our understanding of host specificity. The geographic distribution of STs is summarised and the impact this may have on investigations into the role of the organism in disease is discussed. Finally,

Embryologic origin of endometriosis: analysis of 101 human female fetuses.

The etiology of endometriosis, a gynecological disease characterized by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity, is still unknown. Our research group has recently demonstrated the presence of ectopic endometrium in human female fetuses at different gestational ages. In this manuscript we describe four new cases of fetal endometriosis found among a series of 52 female fetuses analyzed at autopsy. The anatomical localization of this ectopic endometrium, and its histological and immunohistochemical characteristics are depicted. We suggest that endometriosis is cau

Concurrent primary and secondary myiasis on basal cell carcinoma.

Myiasis is a disease caused by infestation of fly larvae in human and other vertebrate tissues. It is a skin condition common in tropical and subtropical countries and its predisposing factors are: chronic diseases, immunodeficiency, poor hygiene, senility, psychiatric disorders, skin cancers and ulcerated mucosae. We report the case of a healthy patient who after traumatic injury of a preexisting lesion showed a tumor on the dorsal region parasitized by fly larvae. The histopathological examination performed for the diagnosis of skin neoplasm surprisingly revealed the presence of a partially

False-positive rifampicin resistance on Xpert® MTB/RIF: case report and clinical implications.

The World Health Organization had endorsed Xpert® MTB/RIF (Xpert) as the initial diagnostic for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) or TB suspects co-infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. We investigated an unexpected case of rifampicin (RMP) resistance on Xpert using repeat Xpert, smear microscopy, MTBDRplus assay, culture, drug susceptibility testing, spoligotyping and rpoB gene sequencing. A false-positive result was most likely, given the wild type rpoB gene sequence and exclusion of both mixed infection and mixture of drug-susceptible and drug-resistant populations. When decen

Bacterial virulence in the moonlight: multitasking bacterial moonlighting proteins are virulence determinants in infectious disease.

Men may not be able to multitask, but it is emerging that proteins can. This capacity of proteins to exhibit more than one function is termed protein moonlighting, and, surprisingly, many highly conserved proteins involved in metabolic regulation or the cell stress response have a range of additional biological actions which are involved in bacterial virulence. This review highlights the multiple roles exhibited by a range of bacterial proteins, such as glycolytic and other metabolic enzymes and molecular chaperones, and the role that such moonlighting activity plays in the virulence character

The epidemic of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer is here: is it time to change our treatment paradigms?

Although relatively uncommon, oropharyngeal cancers are increasing in incidence despite declining prevalence of smoking and in direct opposition to a decreasing incidence of all other head and neck cancers. An epidemic of human papillomavirus (HPV)--associated oropharyngeal cancers seems to account for these incidence trends. Important demographic, behavioral, and prognostic characteristics define this unique population. Changes in prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, staging, and treatment are needed. This article summarizes the epidemiology and clinical behavior of HPV-associated oropharyngeal

Galectin fingerprinting in Warthin's tumors: lectin-based approach to trace its origin?

Warthin's tumor of the parotid gland is assumed to originate from the proliferation of epithelial inclusions within parotid lymph nodes. In that case, these cells are supposed to retain characteristics similar to common salivary gland ductal cells. Using immunohistochemical fingerprinting with four members of the family of adhesion/growth-regulatory galectins and comparison to intra- and interlobular ducts, marked similarities were noted for presence of galectins-3, -7 and -8. Notably, profiles of lectin binding, determined by applying human lectins as probes, were also similar when testing bi

Genomic instability and rapid clinical course in adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia patient.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is a distinct clinical entity characterized by a clonal proliferation of malignant T-lymphocytes. The etiologic agent of the disease is a Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I. It occurs almost exclusively in areas where the virus is endemic; however the disease develops only in the minority of patients who are virus carriers. Karyotyping findings and their correlation with clinical features are still limited in T-cell malignancies, complicated by clinical heterogeneity and a plethora of secondary abnormalities. This study describes detailed chromosomal and fluo

[Autoinflammatory syndromes].

Autoinflammatory syndromes (AIS) are a heterogeneous group of congenital diseases characterized by the presence of recurrent episodes of fever and local or generalized inflammation, in the absence of infectious agents, detectable auto-antibodies or antigen-specific autoreactive T-cells. These diseases have been much better understood during the past 15 years, mainly due to the marked advances of the Human Genoma Project and its implications in the identification and characterization of genetic mutations. In this paper we make a revision of the classification of AIS and focus our attention spec
