Supporting parent treatment decision-making in relapsed and refractory neuroblastoma: co-design of a web-based intervention.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children diagnosed with relapsed or refractory neuroblastoma become involved in making treatment decisions for their child due to an absence of no standard treatment protocol with no clear treatment endpoints. Relapsed and refractory neuroblastoma is a poor-prognosis childhood cancer with varying treatment options available depending on their child’s response to treatment. As a result, parents in partnership with their child’s medical team make repeated treatment decisions over time. Research has shown how this decision-making is influenced by uncertainty of their child’

LM-TLIPs: Integrating Large Model and Transfer Learning Technology for Precise Identification of Phosphorylation Sites in SARS-CoV-2.

In recent years, the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 has triggered a global health crisis and socio-economic challenges. As a crucial post-translational modification, phosphorylation plays a vital role in the regulation of cellular functions. Given its close relationship with SARS-CoV-2 infection, accurately identifying virus-induce phosphorylation sites is essential for understanding the molecular mechanisms of viral infection and its impact on host cells. Although the development of various computational tools for predicting phosphorylation sites, these tools have several shortcomings, such as in

Assisting clinical diagnosis with interpretable fuzzy probabilistic modelling.

BACKGROUND: The need for transparency and interpretability is a fundamental theme to be addressed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, especially in high-risk applications such as healthcare. In this work, we propose Fuzzy Sets in Probability Trees (FPT), a novel method that combines probabilistic trees and fuzzy logic. This approach is fully interpretable, providing clinicians with a tool generate and verify the entire clinical decision process. METHODS: FPT extends the existing framework of Probabilistic Decision Trees by incorporating the uncertainty in the data, allowing for a flexibl

Osmolarity trajectories and outcomes in patients with acute pancreatitis in the intensive care unit: group-based trajectory modeling.

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common acute gastrointestinal disorder, with a subset of patients progressing to severe forms associated with high mortality. While osmotic pressure significantly influences its pathological processes, the relationship between trajectories of plasma osmolality changes and patient prognosis remains incompletely elucidated. METHODS: Using the MIMIC-IV database, we analyzed 1,138 ICU-confirmed acute pancreatitis cases. Group-based trajectory models were applied to identify distinct trajectories of plasma osmolality changes. Cox regression models and Kaplan

Early classification of functional connectomes in Parkinson's disease: a comparison of machine learning classifiers using multi-scale topological features.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects brain networks across multiple anatomical scales, but it is unclear how correctly machine learning (ML) would classify the (altered) topology of functional connectomes in single PD cases at an early clinical stage. Leveraging network graph theory (NGT) for multi-scale topological feature extraction, here we determined (i) which features (across scales, lobes and types) are relatively more important, and (ii) which current state-of-the-art ML classifiers provide better performances, when discriminating newly diagnosed, drug-naive PD patients vs. heal

Dynamic Local Conformal Reinforcement Network (DLCR) for Aortic Dissection Centerline Tracking.

Pre-extracted aortic dissection (AD) centerline is very useful for quantitative diagnosis and treatment of AD disease. However, centerline extraction is challenging because (i) the lumen of AD is very narrow and irregular, yielding failure in feature extraction and interrupted topology; and (ii) the acute nature of AD requires a quick algorithm, however, AD scans usually contain thousands of slices, centerline extraction is very time-consuming. In this paper, a fast AD centerline extraction algorithm, which is based on a local conformal deep reinforced agent and dynamic tracking framework, is

Enhancing Early Alzheimer's Disease Detection Through Big Data and Ensemble Few-Shot Learning.

Alzheimer's disease is a severe brain disorder that causes harm in various brain areas and leads to memory damage. The limited availability of labeled medical data poses a significant challenge for accurate Alzheimer's disease detection. There is a critical need for effective methods to improve the accuracy of Alzheimer's disease detection, considering the scarcity of labeled data, the complexity of the disease, and the constraints related to data privacy. To address this challenge, our study leverages the power of Big Data in the form of pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) within

Attention-Guided 3D CNN With Lesion Feature Selection for Early Alzheimer's Disease Prediction Using Longitudinal sMRI.

Predicting the progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is critical for early intervention. Towards this end, various deep learning models have been applied in this domain, typically relying on structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) data from a single time point whereas neglecting the dynamic changes in brain structure over time. Current longitudinal studies inadequately explore disease evolution dynamics and are burdened by high computational complexity. This paper introduces a novel lightweight 3D convolutional neural network specifically designed to

Incurable Alzheimer's disease (AD) plagues many elderly people and families. It is important to accurately diagnose and predict it at an early stage. However, the existing methods have shortcomings, such as inability to learn local and global information and the inability to extract effective features. In this paper, we propose a lightweight classification network Local and Global Graph ConvNeXt. This model has a hybrid architecture of convolutional neural network and Transformers. We build the Global NeXt Block and the Local NeXt Block to extract the local and global features of the structura

PVCsNet : A Specialized Artificial Intelligence-Based Model to Classify Premature Ventricular Contractions From ECG Images.

Premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) are irregularities in heart rhythm where the ventricles contract earlier than expected, disrupting the normal cardiac cycle. Identifying the origin of PVCs before surgery is crucial as it can reduce operation duration, lower radiation exposure, and potentially enhance ablation success rates. Current detection methods face limitations in accuracy and data processing, often requiring large datasets and complex interpretations. This study presents PVCsNet, a deep-learning network specifically designed for classifying premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) in

Self-Supervised Multi-Scale Multi-Modal Graph Pool Transformer for Sellar Region Tumor Diagnosis.

The sellar region tumor is a brain tumor that only exists in the brain sellar, which affects the central nervous system. The early diagnosis of the sellar region tumor subtypes helps clinicians better understand the best treatment and recovery of patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has proven to be an effective tool for the early detection of sellar region tumors. However, the existing sellar region tumor diagnosis still remains challenging due to the small amount of dataset and data imbalance. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel self-supervised multi-scale multi-modal grap

EEG Temporal-Spatial Feature Learning for Automated Selection of Stimulus Parameters in Electroconvulsive Therapy.

The risk of adverse effects in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), such as cognitive impairment, can be high if an excessive stimulus is applied to induce the necessary generalized seizure (GS); Conversely, inadequate stimulus results in failure. Recent efforts to automate this task can facilitate statistical analyses on individual parameters or qualitative predictions. However, this automation still significantly lags behind the requirements in clinical practices. This study addresses this issue by predicting the probability of GS induction under the joint restriction of a patient's EEG (electro

DSleepNet: Disentanglement Learning for Personal Attribute-Agnostic Three-Stage Sleep Classification Using Wearable Sensing Data.

Long-term non-invasive sleep stage monitoring is instrumental in comprehending the progression of sleep disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and the interplay between sleep, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, the conventional deep learning approach is susceptible to personal attributes (PAs) such as age, Body Mass Index, and severity of sleep apnea existing in the training dataset, potentially hindering its generalisation capacity to unseen cohorts. This paper introduces DSleepNet, a novel approach that disentangles the feature space into PA-specific and PA-agnostic compo
