Long-term effects of losing a spouse or child in a motor vehicle crash.

In this article we examine the long-term effects of the sudden, unexpected loss of a spouse or child. In the spouse study, interviews were conducted with 39 individuals who had lost a spouse in a motor vehicle crash 4 to 7 years ago and with 39 matched controls. In the parent study, interviews were conducted with 41 parents who had lost a child in a crash and with 41 matched controls. Control respondents were matched to bereaved respondents case-by-case on the basis of sex, age, income, education, and number and ages of children. Significant differences between bereaved spouses and controls we

Beyond standardized measures: a mixed-methods pilot study of integrated non-cognitive skills training in German upper secondary students.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cognitive skills such as growth mindset, grit, self-discipline, self-efficacy, and resilience have been identified as modifiable psychological resources supporting academic functioning, yet few interventions address multiple non-cognitive skills simultaneously and evidence for integrated programs remains limited. This pilot study examined the feasibility and preliminary effects of a 1-day training addressing all five constructs among German upper secondary school students across Kirkpatrick's four evaluation levels. METHODS: Using a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design, n

Forced migration and human trafficking: survivors' narratives of strength and survival upon first arrival in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Human trafficking poses a major public health challenge to the international community, with significant health and social consequences for those affected. Forced migrants are particularly vulnerable to becoming victims of human trafficking due to language barriers and migration-related hardships. These include social and economic deprivation. To better understand the lived experiences within this already vulnerable group, it is essential to examine individual cases in relation to risk factors, experiences of exploitation and exit, and resilience. METHODS: Using a qualitative appr

User needs and design opportunities for a conversational agent for tuberculosis treatment: A mixed-methods study.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge requiring prolonged treatment that is often complicated by adverse drug reactions (ADRs), stigma, and poor treatment adherence. Although digital health interventions show promise in supporting TB care, patients' needs, expectations, and design requirements for conversational agents remain poorly understood. This study identified challenges experienced by healthcare professionals and patients with TB and explored opportunities for designing a user-centered conversational agent for TB care. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, comprising

Hidden stories of caregivers with children living with sickle cell disease in Uganda: Experiences, coping strategies and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) poses a substantial public health challenge in Uganda, exhibiting distinct regional variations in prevalence. The Uganda Sickle Cell Surveillance Study has estimated an overall SCD prevalence of 13.3%. Notably, this prevalence varies significantly across the country's regions, reaching its highest in the northern region at 22.2% and it's lowest in the central region at 5.3%. This variation reflects the diverse impact of SCD and underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of its regional implications. SCD places substantial physical, social, and

Prevalence and Predictors of Self-Reported Swallowing Difficulties in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Population-Based Study from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS).

It is well established that dysphagia is common amongst older adults, yet there is a paucity of evidence from population-based studies confirming prevalence and risk factors. The current study aimed to determine prevalence and predictors of self-reported swallowing difficulty in community-dwelling older adults. The National Health and Aging Trends Study is a nationally representative population study that has followed American Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older since 2011. Annual, interviews collect detailed information on biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and economi

The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Healthcare Providers' Mental Health: Experiences at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, healthcare providers were expected to provide care to individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), putting them at risk of acquiring COVID-19. The possibility of acquiring poorly understood infectious diseases while providing care may have an impact on the mental health of providers. We conducted a study to explore the effects of COVID-19 on the mental health of healthcare providers. METHODS: Between April and August 2021, we conducted in-depth interviews with 60 healthcare providers in the infectious disease unit (IDU) and other units of the hospital (non-IDU).

Quality of life and unmet needs in patients with fabry disease: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Fabry disease (FD) consider their quality of life to be significantly affected. The majority of studies evaluate the quality of life using quantitative measures and standardised scales that offer relevant information about experience with the disease in multiple aspects. The main objective of the research was to examine in depth the quality of life and unmet needs of patients diagnosed with FD in relation to their disease and treatment. A qualitative and transversal study was carried out in two stages: (a) nine semi-structured qualitative interviews with patients and

An unbelievable ordeal: The experiences of adult survivors treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a rescue treatment option for adult patients with severe cardiac dysfunction or respiratory failure. While short-term patient outcomes, such as in-hospital mortality and complications, have been widely described, little is known about the illness or recovery experience from the perspectives of survivors. Subjective reports of health are important indicators of the full, long-term impact of critical illness and treatment with ECMO on survivors' lives. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the experiences and needs of ad

Patient experience and psychologists' attitudes toward AI in psychological treatment: A topic-modeling study.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is entering psychological treatment, yet research remains dominated by symptom outcome trials, leaving two questions under-researched: how patients experience AI therapy tools, and how psychologists regard the AI applications they may be asked to adopt. We applied topic modeling (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) to two Swedish-language corpora to contrast lived use with anticipated use. The first corpus comprised interview data from 11 patients who had engaged with a conversational AI assistant in the treatment of social anxiety disorder. The second comprise
