A unique feature of iron loss via close adhesion of Helicobacter pylori to host erythrocytes.

Iron deficiency anemia is an extra-stomach disease experienced in H. pylori carriers. Individuals with type A blood are more prone to suffering from H. pylori infection than other individuals. To clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying H. pylori-associated anemia, we collected erythrocytes from A, B, O, and AB blood donors and analyzed morphology, the number of erythrocytes with H. pylori colonies attached to them, and iron contents in erythrocytes and H. pylori (NCTC11637 and SS1 strains) by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and synchrotron radiation soft X-ray im

A Randomized Feeding Trial of Iron-Biofortified Beans on School Children in Mexico.

Iron deficiency is a major public health problem worldwide, with the highest burden among children. The objective of this randomized efficacy feeding trial was to determine the effects of consuming iron-biofortified beans (Fe-Beans) on the iron status in children, compared to control beans (Control-Beans). A cluster-randomized trial of biofortified beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L), bred to enhance iron content, was conducted over 6 months. The participants were school-aged children (n = 574; 5⁻12 years), attending 20 rural public boarding schools in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Double-blind random

High prevalence of subclinical vitamin A deficiency in Jordan: a forgotten risk.

This longitudinal study assessed growth and vitamin A status of schoolchildren after earlier surveys had linked stunting among Jordanian children to dietary zinc and iron inadequacies. A group of 1,023 subjects ages 5.5 to 9.9 years were randomly recruited for study from seven disadvantaged semirural districts. Baseline assessment included anthropometric and laboratory data with the relevant dietary information. Over nine months of study, the subjects received a daily snack meal. Immediately before the final assessment, each student received one 100,000 IU vitamin A capsule. At baseline there

The impact of ready-to-use-therapeutic-food (RUTF) on micronutrient levels in undernourished children with cancer: a randomized open-labelled controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that micronutrient deficiencies are predictive of poorer outcomes in children with cancer. We assessed the prevalence and clinical impact of circulating micronutrient concentrations, as well as the change in micronutrient status after RUTF supplementation, in undernourished children with cancer. METHODS: Undernourished children with cancer were randomized 1:1 to receive either standard nutritional therapy(SNT) or SNT + RUTF for 6 weeks. The primary outcome was weight gain, and secondary outcomes included changes in micronutrient status from study entry t

The High Prevalence of Anemia in Cambodian Children and Women Cannot Be Satisfactorily Explained by Nutritional Deficiencies or Hemoglobin Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is highly prevalent in Cambodian women and children, but data on causes of anemia are scarce. We performed a national micronutrient survey in children and women that was linked to the Cambodian Demographic Health Survey 2014 (CDHS-2014) to assess the prevalence of micronutrient deficiency, hemoglobin disorders and intestinal parasite infection. METHODS: One-sixth of households from the CDHS-2014 were selected for a follow-up visit for the micronutrient survey. Households were visited from two weeks to two months after the CDHS-2014 visit. Data on micronutrient status were a

Anaemia during pregnancy: could riboflavin deficiency be implicated?

Anaemia affects more than 36 % of all pregnancies globally and is associated with significant maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is widely recognised as the most common nutritional cause of anaemia but other nutrient deficiencies are also implicated, including the B vitamin riboflavin, albeit its role is largely under-investigated and thus typically overlooked. Riboflavin, in its co-factor forms flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN), is required for numerous oxidation-reduction reactions, antioxidant function and in the metabolism of othe

Cancer: The role of iron and ferroptosis.

Iron is an essential element for virtually all living things. Body iron levels are tightly controlled as both increased iron levels and iron deficiency are associated with many clinical conditions. Increased iron levels are associated with a worse prognosis in some cancers, so understanding the role of iron in cancer development has thus been an active area of research. Regulated forms of cell death are important in development and disease pathogenesis. In this Medicine in Focus review article, we discuss the role of iron in cancer, and ferroptosis, a new form of iron-regulated cell death trig

Transferrin-dependent uptake and distribution of iron in osteoclast-like cells.

Iron is an essential micro component and is involved in numerous critical cellular processes and in energy production. While its roles in oxygen transport and in oxidative phosphorylation are well documented, it remains to be elucidated, whether iron modulates specific cellular processes in different organs. Iron deficiency has been found to lead to a decrease in the capacity of osteoclasts to dissolve amorphous calcium phosphate. Furthermore, levels of iron in the cellular environment led to significant changes in the levels of transcripts encoding iron transport proteins. Within the present

Magnitude and factors associated with adherence to Iron-folic acid supplementation among pregnant women in Eritrean refugee camps, northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Globally, anemia is a public health problem affecting the life of more than two billion people. Pregnant women are at high risk of iron deficiency anemia due to increased nutrient requirement during pregnancy. Iron-folic acid supplementation is the main strategy for prevention and control of iron deficiency anemia and its effectiveness depends on adherence to Iron-Folic Acid tablets. In the refugee camps of Ethiopia, despite the efforts made to reduce iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy, information about adherence to iron-folic acid supplementation and its associated factors a

Effects of long-term weekly iron and folic acid supplementation on lower genital tract infection - a double blind, randomised controlled trial in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Provision of routine iron supplements to prevent anaemia could increase the risk for lower genital tract infections as virulence of some pathogens depends on iron availability. This trial in Burkina Faso assessed whether weekly periconceptional iron supplementation increased the risk of lower genital tract infection in young non-pregnant and pregnant women. METHODS: Genital tract infections were assessed within a double blind, controlled, non-inferiority trial of malaria risk among nulliparous women, randomised to receive either iron and folic acid or folic acid alone, weekly, und

Transferrin C2 and Alzheimer's disease: another piece of the puzzle found?

A significant increase in the occurrence of the transferrin C2 genetic subtype has been found in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This variant has previously been linked to diseases thought to be associated with free radical damage. We hypothesize that Alzheimer's disease is caused by free radical damage to membranes of endocytic vesicles due to defective binding of iron and aluminium by Tf C2. The aluminium binds to the membranes, creating pores, while the iron reacts with H2O2 and superoxide radicals produced by activated microglia (brain phagocytes), to produce hydroxyl radicals (oxidativ

Red cell distribution width and reticulocyte hemoglobin content as predictors of iron depletion in children with cyanotic congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anemia is challenging to diagnose in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) because of the high hemoglobin concentration as a compensatory mechanism for cyanosis. PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify predictive parameters of iron depletion status and assess the prevalence of iron deficiency in patients with CCHD. METHODS: A descriptive study enrolled patients with CCHD aged 6 months to 15 years between September 2022 and September 2023. Participants were categorized into iron depletion and iron sufficiency groups defined by a serum ferritin level

Differential diagnosis of microcytic hypochromic anemia in dogs: the role of hepcidin and reticulocyte hemoglobin indices.

Microcytic hypochromic anemia in dogs represents a persistent diagnostic challenge, particularly when differentiating between absolute iron deficiency and inflammation-driven functional iron restriction. Conventional biomarkers, including serum iron and ferritin, present important limitations in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and temporal resolution, restricting their ability to accurately reflect dynamic changes in iron metabolism. This review critically evaluates the diagnostic performance and clinical relevance of hepcidin and reticulocyte hemoglobin indices (CHr/RET-He) as advanced bio

Preoperative intravenous iron treatment - a cohort study on colorectal cancer recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous (i.v.) iron treatment has been speculated to increase the malignant potential of colorectal malignancies but also to enhance the immune systems potential to fight the invasive tumor. Clinical data however is very limited. We investigate if preoperative i.v. iron treatment is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study on surgical CRC patients with iron deficiency anemia (1st March 2013 - 31st December 2019). Patients were grouped based on whether they had received preoperative treatment with i.v. iron. Local data was combined
