OBJECTIVE: Auditory event-related potential (ERP) correlates of pre-dementia in late-life may also be sensitive to chronic effects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in mid-life. In addition to mTBI history, other clinical factors may also influence ERP measures of brain function. This study's objective was to evaluate the relationship between mTBI history, auditory ERP metrics, and common comorbidities.
METHODS: ERPs elicited during an auditory target detection task, psychological symptoms, and hearing sensitivity were collected in 152 combat-exposed veterans and service members, as part

OBJECTIVE: The number of diagnosed cases of stomach cancer in Western countries is relatively small compared to prevalence rates in Eastern populations. This disparity creates a general lack of information and understanding of the experience of patients treated for this disease in North America. Surgical removal of the stomach, also called total gastrectomy (TG), is presently the only curative treatment available to patients with stomach cancer. Considering the impact such a procedure may have, very little is known about what factors influence an individual's postsurgical quality of life (QL).

That chemical insults or nutritive changes during in utero and/or postnatal life can emerge as diseases much later in life are now being accepted as a recurring phenomenon. In this regard, inorganic arsenic is a multisite human carcinogen found at high levels in the drinking water of millions of people, although it has been difficult until recently to produce tumors in rodents with this metalloid. A mouse transplacental model has been developed where maternal exposure to inorganic arsenic either acts as a complete carcinogen or enhances carcinogenic response to other agents given subsequently

Anxiety disorders, depression and animal models of vulnerability to a depression-like syndrome have been associated with dysregulation of brain serotonergic systems. These effects could result from genetic influences, adverse early life experiences (ELE), or acute stressful life events, all of which can alter serotonergic neurotransmission and have been implicated in determining vulnerability to neuropsychiatric disorders. To evaluate the effects of ELE, adverse experiences during adulthood, and potential interactions between these factors on neuronal tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (tph2) mRNA expre

BACKGROUND: In the LIPS (Lescol Intervention Prevention Study), fluvastatin 80 mg/day reduced the risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) by 22% versus placebo (p = 0.01) following successful first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with stable or unstable angina or silent ischemia. The cost-effectiveness of such therapy is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of fluvastatin following successful first PCI from a US healthcare system perspective.
METHODS: We used a Markov model to estimate expected outcomes and costs of 2 alternative treatment strategie

INTRODUCTION: OSAS is a common yet underdiagnosed condition, particularly among patients with head and neck cancers (HNC). Anatomical changes caused by the tumor or its treatments-surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy-can promote the onset of OSAS. However, fatigue in these patients is often attributed solely to the cancer treatment itself, which may delay appropriate diagnosis and management.
METHODS: This prospective single-center study aims to assess the clinical feasibility of OSAS screening in patients with HNC using an innovative mobile application, Apneal, which uses smartphone sensor

BACKGROUND: Cancer-Related Fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prominent subjective symptoms that cancer patients encounter, in particular individuals with gastrointestinal tumors. This fatigue significantly impacts their quality of life, impairs adherence to treatment, and may ultimately reduce overall survival rates. Moxibustion has gradually gained recognition as a therapeutic intervention for CRF. However, clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of moxibustion remains limited.
METHODS: This investigation employs a randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial design. A 1:1 random allocation

Cancer is a major public health issue, with an estimated 20 million new cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths worldwide in 2022. Approximately 44.5% of patients experience cancer pain, significantly impacting their quality of life and causing physical and psychological burdens. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, shows potential in managing cancer pain. This review summarizes current research on rTMS for cancer pain, focusing on pain directly caused by tumors, pain from cancer treatments, postoperative pain, and cancer-related sy

Early-life adversity (ELA) is characterized by exposure to traumatic events during early periods of life, particularly involving emotional, sexual and/or physical adversities during childhood. Mental disorders are strongly influenced by environmental and lifestyle-related risk factors including ELA. However, the molecular link between ELA and the risk of an adult mental disorder is still not fully understood. Evidence is emerging that long-lasting changes in the epigenetic processes regulating gene expression, such as DNA methylation, play an important role in the biological mechanisms linking

An aberrant growth of plasma cells in the bone marrow characterizes the hematological neoplasm known as multiple myeloma, which is typically accompanied by increased bone pain and skeletal-related events such as pathological fractures and/or spinal cord compression. Changes in the bone marrow microenvironment brought on by increased osteoclastic activity and/or decreased osteoblastic activity as a result of myeloma bone disease have a detrimental effect on quality of life. Bone-modifying medications such as bisphosphonates or denosumab are used to treat myeloma bone disease. These substances c

Rodents acquire more information from the sense of smell than humans because they have a nearly fourfold greater variety of olfactory receptors. They use olfactory information not only for obtaining food, but also for detecting environmental dangers. Predator-derived odor compounds provoke instinctive fear and stress reactions in animals. Inbred lines of experimental animals react in an innate stereotypical manner to predators even without prior exposure. Predator odors have also been used in models of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder following a lif
