Stannous fluoride but not stannous chloride has shown a caries inhibiting effect in animal studies. The effect of aqueous solutions of stannous fluoride and stannous chloride on dental enamel surfaces was investigated by scanning electron microscope and analytical electron microprobe. Some large globules and a continuous layer of small globules were observed after stannous fluoride treatment. Ultrastructural and X-Ray microanalytical aspects of primary biliary cirrhosis were analysed and compared to those of normal liver. Electron microscopic studies showed a significant increase of dense lipofuscin-like granules in PBC compared to the hepatocytes of normal liver (665%). Mast cells participate in experimental calcinosis. Skin from patients with urticaria pigmentosa (cutaneous mastocytosis) calcifies in vitro. In the present report, the nature of the calcium deposit was studied by electron optical techniques. The cultured mast cells of urticaria pigmentosa skin were surrounded by a large number of round bodies with an average diameter of 200-300 nm. Most of the round bodies were membrane bounded, while a few contained lamellar structures. These bodies may represent matrix vesicles as seen in calcifying hard tissues and/or may be remnants of mast cell granules.

This study reports the synthesis and crystal structure determination of a novel CrTe3 phase using various experimental and theoretical methods. We present a phosphor nanoparticle that shows both upconversion luminescence (UCL) and cathodoluminescence (CL). With this particle, low-autofluorescence, deep-tissue and wide-field fluorescence imaging can be achieved with nanometer-order high-spatial-resolution imaging. Mechanical properties of nanoparticle chain aggregates (NCA) including tensile strength and Young's modulus were measured using an instrument incorporating an AFM tip under SEM imaging. The NCA were studied individually and as network films. Carbon NCA were made by laser ablation of graphite, and SnO2 NCA were made by oxidation of a tin compound. The films were deformable and showed elastic behavior. NCA serve as reinforcing fillers in rubber and films of SnO2 NCA for trace gas detection.

A 46-year-old woman developed nephrotic syndrome at the age of 16 in 1973. On the basis of the histological findings of the first renal biopsy, she was diagnosed as having minimal change nephrotic syndrome. Initial treatment with steroid was effective, but she had several relapses during tapering of the daily dose of steroid. Gingivitis occurring when bacterial plaque accumulates in the gingival crevice provides a convenient and interesting model for chronic inflammation in humans. In some patients, gingivitis progresses to the destructive lesion of periodontitis, involving the formation of periodontal pockets.
