Nurse-led implementation of evidence-based bundles to reduce CAUTIs in an academic acute care hospital: A four-year longitudinal quasi-experimental study.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based catheter bundles, guided by the Plan-Do-Check-Act model, in reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and catheter usage at a 643-bed academic hospital. BACKGROUND: Despite previous efforts, our facility's CAUTI rates remained high, leading to increased morbidity, extended hospital stays, and higher costs. A four-year project was initiated to implement targeted interventions. METHOD: This quasi-experimental study used a four-year strategy, including catheter insertion and maintenance bundles, a nurse-d

Development and Validation of an Educational Tool on Hypodermoclysis for Palliative Care Professionals.

Background/Objectives: Hypodermoclysis has gained increasing recognition as a safe, effective, and minimally invasive method for administering medication and fluids in palliative care. Despite its advantages, its adoption remains limited, primarily due to a lack of structured training resources for healthcare professionals. This study aimed to develop and validate an educational tool for training clinical nurses in hypodermoclysis administration in palliative care. Methods: This is a methodological study with a multi-methods approach. Study development involved a needs assessment with 48 profe

Undergraduate nursing students' preferences for virtual reality simulations in nursing skills training: A discrete choice experiment.

OBJECTIVE: Nursing students face increasing challenges, making it crucial to explore innovative teaching methods such as virtual reality simulations to enhance skills. This study aimed to assess their preferences for virtual reality simulation in skills training using a discrete choice experiment. METHOD: A discrete choice experiment with six attributes (types of virtual reality, interaction, learning contents, collaboration, frequency, and costs for each additional training module) was used. A mixed logit model and latent class analysis were adopted to analyze data using Sawtooth Software an

Influenza and Up-to-Date COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Among Health Care Personnel - National Healthcare Safety Network, United States, 2022-23 Influenza Season.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that health care personnel (HCP) receive an annual influenza vaccine and that everyone aged ≥6 months stay up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccination. Health care facilities report vaccination of HCP against influenza and COVID-19 to CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). During January-June 2023, NHSN defined up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination as receipt of a bivalent COVID-19 mRNA vaccine dose or completion of a primary series within the preceding 2 months. This analysis describes influenza and up-to-date COVID-19 vacci

Relationship between the jaw-closing force and dietary form in older adults without occlusal support requiring nursing care.

In clinical practice, we encounter cases wherein older adults lacking occlusal support consume foods requiring mastication and adequate swallowing function. This study investigated the relationship between jaw-closing force (JCF) and dietary form in older adults without occlusal support requiring nursing care. This prospective cross-sectional study included 123 older adults requiring nursing care who lost their molar occlusal support and consumed food orally without dentures. JCF was defined as the force required for crushing food with the edentulous ridges or with the tooth and edentulous rid

The impact of personality on intention to leave the nursing profession: A structural equation model.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To test a mediating effect of compassion satisfaction on the relationship between personality traits (Big Five) and intent to leave. BACKGROUND: Nursing professionals work in high-stress environments and exhibit more emotional distress and mental health disorders than other hospital professionals. This translates to increased intention to leave their profession. Evidence suggests that compassion satisfaction reduces intention to leave. Research also indicates that personality factors are associated with compassion satisfaction and intent to leave. DESIGN: Using a cross-s

The "self-treatment of wounds for venous leg ulcers checklist" (STOW-V Checklist V1.0): Part 2-The reliability of the Checklist.

The "Self-Treatment of Wounds for Venous Leg Ulcers Checklist" (STOW-V Checklist V1.0) is an evidence-based, standardised tool designed to assist nurses to appraise the conduct of wound treatment when undertaken by patients who have venous leg ulcers. A prospective reliability study was conducted to determine the reliability of the STOW-V Checklist V1.0. Video-recordings of patients who self-treated their leg ulcer were obtained (n = 5) and nurses (n = 15) viewed each video-recording three times and concurrently completed the Checklist. Internal consistency, inter-rater reliability and intra-r

[Confronting the Health-Related Challenges of Climate Change: Nursing Education for the Future].

Climate change is the greatest threat to public health in the 21st century. The increasing health impact of heat waves, the increasing magnitudes and spatial expansions of vector and water-borne diseases epidemics, and the increasing medical burdens of biological allergic illnesses, worsening local air pollution, and other related issues are expected to continue to increase in severity in the near future. All of these issues are global problems that must be faced. Adaptation strategies and action plans related to climate change are needed and emerging. Moreover, integrating the basic concepts,

DESIGN: A discourse-based design was used to examine the language employed by students in constructing their dyslexic identities. METHODS: Using narrative methods, 12 student nurses with dyslexia from two higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland were interviewed during the period February-July 2012. Discourse a

Ulcerative colitis from patients' viewpoint: a review of two Internet surveys.

Ulcerative colitis negatively impacts patients' quality of life, but little is known about which aspects of patients' lives are affected, how patients' perceptions compare with patients with other chronic conditions, and how these perceptions compare with those of gastroenterologists. This review discusses two recent Internet surveys: (1) the Ulcerative Colitis: New Observations on Remission Management And Lifestyle (UC:NORMAL) and (2) the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America studies. The surveys revealed that the major impact ulcerative colitis has on patients includes frequent disease m

Assessing the health system's capacity to conduct neonatal resuscitation in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Globally and nationally approximately a quarter of neonatal deaths and an unknown number of intrapartum stillbirths are attributed to intrapartum complications known as birth asphyxia. Simple stimulation and resuscitation can save many of these lives. OBJECTIVE: To describe the capacity of the Ethiopian health system to provide neonatal resuscitation with bag and musk. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected from 741 health facilities and one birth attendant at each facility was interviewed. This paper focuses on 711 nurses and midwives. Based on a guided interview, response
